Do you want your MIDI drum tracks to sound like they were
played by a real drummer?

LA Drum Studio was developed by an LA based studio drummer /
percussionist in an effort to create MIDI drum and
percussion tracks with a "human" feel. MIDI drum tracks can
often sound computer generated or machine-like. LA Drum
Studio tracks are clean, tight, and "in the pocket," but are
also very musical and expressive. All of the drum and
percussion tracks were performed, not step-recorded or
created through the use of other sequencing techniques.
Extensive editing of the tracks was avoided to preserve a
realistic feel.

THE COMPLETE VERSION

The LA Drum Studio Demo is a representative sampling of the
complete version of LA Drum Studio which is a collection of
100 MIDI Drum and Percussion Grooves available in both
Macintosh and PC formats. The files vary in length from 1
to 32 bars adding up to a total of 776 bars of sequenced
drums in 100 files.

Electronic Musician Magazine (Jan. 96 Issue)
The LA Studio Drum patterns have consistently solid
grooves. Hi-hats and rides groove naturally, kick patterns
push forward, snares snap. The programmer was obviously
paying attention to feel.

LA Drum Studio includes:

Studio Funk
Studio Swing
Studio Latin
Studio Fills
Studio Percussion
Studio Artist Styles

INSTRUCTIONS

LOAD THE FILE

LA Drum Studio is a library of type 1 standard MIDI files.
To use the file(s), open them with your MIDI sequencing
software program. If you are not sure how this is done, see
your sequencing software manual about loading files saved in
the standard MIDI file format.

MIDI CHANNEL SETUP

All the MIDI files are set to MIDI channel 10; the standard
for MIDI drums. Make sure your device is set to receive
drums on MIDI channel 10. If you usually use a different
MIDI channel for drums, make sure that the sequence is set
to send that channel. Whatever channel you decide to use,
just make sure that the sequence is set to the same channel
as your sound source.

TO GM OR NOT TO GM

Created using the Roland Sound Canvas (the industry standard
for General MIDI), this library is set up for any MIDI
sound source that supports the General MIDI (GM) standard.
However, if your sound module or drum machine does not
support General MIDI, no problem! You can use the General
MIDI drum kit map below to help you transpose the sounds to
the correct MIDI note numbers for your particular synth,
sampler, sound module, or drum machine.

LOOP EM

Except for the Studio Fills, nearly all of the files were
designed to be looped. Loop them for a continuous
sequence.

LOADING, OPENING, OR IMPORTING THE STANDARD MIDI FILE

The Standard MIDI File is the universally accepted format
for the sharing of MIDI files between different sequencing
software and even different computer platforms.

IBM PC

WINDOWS / DOS SEQUENCERS

Within your sequencing software, go to File | Open | and
select the disk and directory where you have installed the
LA Drum Studio files. There you will find patterns with
.MID extensions. Double click the title of a file to open
it.

MEDIA PLAYER

If you are using Windows 3.1 or later, you can use Media
Player to audition files. Using File Manager, simply
double-click the title of any LA Drum Studio file. Doing so
will call up Media Player which will plays the file directly
(assuming you have a properly configured sound card or MIDI
interface).

MACINTOSH

How you will use standard MIDI files on your Macintosh
varies according to the software you use. For example, to
open a standard MIDI file using Opcodes Vision for the
Macintosh, select Import File from the File menu. Using the
dialog box, navigate to the LA Drum Studio folder, select a
file in the list, and click on Import.

ABOUT STANDARD AND BRUSH KITS

The Roland Sound Canvas contains several variations of the

them. Standard and Brush.

When using a track that calls for the BRUSH KIT, set the
Sound Canvas to BRUSH. If using any other MIDI sound
source, make the following changes.

BRUSH KIT INSTRUMENT CHANGES

Brush Tap D1, 38
Brush Slap Eb1, 39
