MERENGUE

If you're a latin band on the other side of the Atlantic and your
bands repertoire does not include a piece of music using this
rhythm - quit now! The Merengue is a Dominican rhythm with a long
history for waking spirits in the most introverted of musicians -
and dancers. One reason for this could be to do with it's density
of accented sixteenth beat phrases and the droning rasp of the
Guiro - a hand held wooden percussion instrument played with what
looks like an Afro comb. The congas in this instance may as well
be played using heavy sticks as opposed to the usual hands.
