Joypedal monitors the PC joystick port for signals on one of its analog
directional channels, and converts these signals into MIDI controller
messages. It was not designed to be used with a real joystick (although
that would not cause any harm). Rather, it was intended to be used with an
organ style volume/expression pedal connected to the joystick port with a
custom adapter. The following instructions will help you build such an
adapter.

ATTEMPT THIS OR ANY OTHER CUSTOM HARDWARE PROJECT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHALL I, DAVID G. SLOMIN, BE HELD LIABLE FOR
ANY POTENTIAL INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOU OR YOUR EQUIPMENT.

That said, this is extremely simple and there shouldn't be any problem.
Parts shouldn't cost you more than 5 USD.

1. Find an appropriate pedal. I use a Yamaha EP-1.

2. Find a matching jack for the pedal's plug. This differs depending
on the brand and model of pedal, but female RCA and female mono 1/4in
are the two most common. Radio Shack carries both of them.

3. Find a male 15 pin D shell plug, to match the joystick port. Radio
Shack tends not to have them in stock, but you can find them online.

4. Connect one lead/shield of the pedal jack to pin 3 of the joystick
plug. It doesn't matter which lead/shield of the pedal jack you choose,
since volume pedals are just variable resistors (which have no polarity).

5. Connect the other lead/shield of the pedal jack to pins 1 and 6
(shorted together) of the joystick plug.

6. That's all. Plug it in and try it out. Build a case or wrap it in
heat shrink if you want.
