Hal for Windows NT/2000
Network Version
Installation Instructions.

This installation requires the assistance of the NT Administrator or someone who has security equivalence.

Follow these instructions carefully for a successful installation.

1. Log on as the Administrator or someone who has security equivalence.

2. Install Hal and SAM from the CD or floppy disks to folders accessible by all users.

3. Copy the files SAM32.DLL and PSAPI.DLL from the WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder, on your local machine, or from the halnt\core directory on the installation CD to the WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder on each machine on the network that you want to use Hal on. These two files must be located somewhere in the PATH for Hal to run.

4. If required copy the Hal's Start menu items to the Start menu for each user that will be using Hal.

For each machine where Hal is to be used do steps 5 to 8

5. Log on as the Administrator or someone who has security equivalence.

6. Locate the Hal for Windows NT installation directory in Windows Explorer and run the program called DOLCFGNT.EXE. You should get a message saying "Interception driver installed and configured successfully". If you get any other message you probably don't have sufficient security permission.

7. If you are unable to locate or access the Hal directory you can run the program directly off the CD or Floppy disk. It is in the \halnt\core directory.

8. Locate the SAM installation directory in Windows Explorer and run the program called SAM.EXE. Configure the synthesizer and/or Braille display for the machine. The settings will be stored locally for that machine.

9. Log off and RESTART the machine.

10. Installation is now complete. Refer to the Manual update readme for additional information.

Removing Hal from the Machine.

First ensure that no user is using Hal.

Before running the Hal un-install program from the start menu you should first remove the interception driver. To do this follow steps 1 to 3 for each machine setup for Hal to be used.

1. Log on as the Administrator or someone who has security equivalence.

2. Use the start menu Run option and run "dolcfgnt -r" from the Hal installation directory, or from the installation CD.

3. You should get a message saying "Interception driver successfully removed". If you get any other message you probably do not have sufficient security permission.

4. Log on as the Administrator and run the Hal un-installation program.

5. Delete any files copied during the installation procedure above.
