Kanji Gold - 'Top 6 Words' Files
=================================

Why?
----
These files are designed to let a Japanese learner study just those
kanji that he is relatively likely to encounter with words he is
likely to come across regardless of whether they are included in any
particular official set.

Short version
-------------
The 'Top 6 Words' files include the six most frequently occurring
'common' words for every kanji in each grade. Words that are not
'common' have been removed.

1. Ensure Kanji Gold is not running.
2. Back up existing Kanji Gold 'Grade.0' to 'Grade.9' files.
3. Copy new files into the Kanji Gold program directory.

Acknowledgements
----------------

Kanji Gold was written by Dr. Denton Hewgill and made available as GNU
free software from http://web.uvic.ca/kanji-gold/

The files accompanying this README are custom dictionary / word lists
that are a subset of the most recent Edict version V2003-05
(File edict.gz from the Monash Nihongo FTP Archive
http://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html )

Contents
--------

The files Grade8_P.jis, Grade9_P.jis, Grade0_P.jis include just
those kanji for those grades which have known 'common' words.

FrequencyOver50.jis includes all kanji from grade 1 to 6 and all from
the Grade?_P.jis files.

'Common' is decided on the bases of the frequency given in the Mainichi
Shimbun word-frequency list (File wordfreq_ck.gz from Monash) or on the
basis of the number of Google hits for that word. Proper names are
excluded where noticed and some adjustment to the final value may
have been made.

'Common' words have a Count greater than 50 in the wordfreq file or more
than 3,000 pages from a Google search (these are roughly equivalent).

From these common words the six with the highest counts for each kanji
are selected. (Note that in practise more than six words may be shown
for a kanji as they may be included from more than one grade for different
kanji).

Usage Note
----------

Version 2 can only load custom dictionaries for vocab tests, not
kanji tests. Customising the Grade.? files is therefore the only way
to alter what words are shown as 'compound words' when working on the
main quiz.

In Version 1 custom dictionaries can be loaded both for vocab testing
and for kanji testing. If you are using version 1 the files 'Grade.1'
to 'Grade.1' can be renamed 'Grade1.dic' etc and used in this way.
Note that if you do this you will be tested on more kanji than those
of the grade in question as the SW tests /all/ kanji used in the words
in the list (e.g. if you load the grade 2 vocabulary as a 'dic' file
for a kanji test you will also be tested on whatever grade 1 kanji
were used in compound words).

Roll your own
-------------
If you want to make your own custom word lists note that the SW only
checks for compound words within the current grade. (If you have
炵 [misuborashii] in the file Grade.0 it will not be listed
under the compounds for [mi(ru), ken] while testing on Grade 1).
Otherwise the Grade.? files are just the same as the custom dictionary
(*.dic) files as described in the help for Kanji Gold.
