4. Other Enhancements.

5. Bug Fixes.

1. BACKGROUND.

There were two original shipping versions of the BrailleNote software, one for the U S market and one for the UK market. The U S version was: KeySoft C E version 3.00, build 1510. The UK version was: KeySoft C E version 3.01, build 1516. The principle difference between the U S and UK versions of the software is that the UK version supports UK Braille Maths and has a UK spelling dictionary.

2. INSTALLATION OF VERSION 3.03 UPGRADE.

The "KeySoft Version 3.03 Field Upgrade" disk provides two setup options. The first, named "Setup", is intended for installation from the BrailleNote Super-Disk Drive. The second, named "Setup with ActiveSync" allows the BrailleNote to be updated from a connected PC running ActiveSync.

If you have downloaded the Field Upgrade zip file from "BrailleNote.com", unzip the files and copy the files onto a floppy disk or ATA card. There should be 19 files including this "Readme.txt" file. This Readme file is also provided in "Keyword.txt" format, in the file named "Read me for version 3.03".

You will need 1 MB of free space on the Flash Disk to perform the upgrade. You can check the amount of free space by going to the "Directory" option in the File Manager menu. Press "SPACE" to select the "Flash Disk" and then press "SPACE with I" to display the amount of free memory and the total size of the Flash disk. If the free space is less than 1 MB you will need to do some housekeeping before installing the upgrade.

2.1.	Using the Super-Disk.

a. Before you start the installation process, switch on your BrailleNote and make sure that the speech is turned on. Press the Reset switch with keys 1, 2 and 3, held down and continue to hold them down until the BrailleNote starts to speak.
b. Place the floppy disk in the Super-Disk drive, select "Application Program" on the Utilities menu, and at the prompt: "Run Program from Drive?", press "SPACE" repeatedly to select the Storage Card, then press "ENTER".
c. At the prompt: "Directory Name?", the default directory should be presented as "Slash", press ENTER to select this, then press SPACE repeatedly to select "Setup". Press ENTER to run the Setup program.
d. Press ENTER at the prompt: "Command Line?".
e. Your BrailleNote will then display "Welcome to KeySoft Version 3.03 installation, to start the installation press ENTER, to cancel press SPACE with E". Press "ENTER" and you will be returned to the Utilities menu and you should hear the Super-Disk whirr for some 30 seconds.
f. The installation program will advise that Version 3.03 installation is complete, and that for the program to run you must press the Reset switch.
g. KeySoft should restart, and you should hear that it is running KeySoft CE Version 3.03, build 1795.

2.2.	Using ActiveSync.

a. Before you start the installation process, switch on your BrailleNote and make sure that the speech is turned on. Press the Reset switch with keys 1, 2 and 3, held down and continue to hold them down until the BrailleNote starts to speak.
b. Establish an ActiveSync connection between your PC and the BrailleNote.
c. Place the "KeySoft Version 3.03 Field Upgrade" disk in PC's drive, and access the files on the disk using Windows Explorer. Select the file "Setup with ActiveSync", and press ENTER.
d. You should immediately get a "Welcome to KeySoft CE Version 3.03" dialog box appearing on your PC. Press ENTER to start the installation.
e. There will be a short "hammering" sound while the setup program establishes a connection with the BrailleNote, and then the file transfer process will begin.
f. The installation program will "beep" approximately once every 3 seconds while the files are copied across to the Flash Disk in the BrailleNote.
g. The file transfer will take approximately 2 minutes, and you will then be presented with a dialog box indicating that the 3.03 upgrade has been successfully installed.
h. Press ENTER to clear the dialog box on your PC, and press the Reset switch on your BrailleNote.
i. KeySoft should restart, and you should hear that it is running KeySoft CE Version 3.03, build 1795.

3. NEW FEATURES.

GENERAL NEW FEATURES.

3.1 Backspace: The volume of the backspace beep is controllable down to nothing. This is under Review Voice settings in the Options Menu.

3.2 ActiveSync is supported through the Infrared port, in addition to the Serial port, with transfer rates up to 1 megabit/second. To access this go to the "Miscellaneous Options" item in the Utilities Menu.

3.3 An option to turn the Thumb Keys "Off" has been added to the Options Menu. "SPACE with O", then 'F' will toggle the Thumb-Keys On or Off.

WORDPROCESSOR / BOOKREADER NEW FEATURES.

3.4 "SPACE with I" displays the name of the current open document in the Word-processor and Book Reader.

3.5 On exiting a file after reading on the Braille display with either the thumb keys or in automatic mode, the cursor will be taken to the last reading position. Subsequent reopening of the file will place you back at the same point at which you exited the file.

3.6 Format Markers: An option has been added to the Braille Display options to have format markers suppressed in reading mode. The User may define how many spaces are displayed prior to the first paragraph, and any subsequent paragraph. The default settings are 2 spaces for both. With the document opened, select the Braille display options from the Options Menu, and press SPACE until "Show new lines in reading mode as linear Braille format" is displayed. Press "SPACE with H" to review the options available at this point.

3.7 "SPACE with D" twice deletes the character under the cursor

3.8 Repeat find is available on "SPACE with N" (for Next occurrence)

3.9 An option has been added to the Block Commands Menu to erase the block markers

3.10 The method of handling ASCII file importing has been modified.

3.11 Files are imported in paragraph format. If the user inserts hard carriage returns to format the file contents, these will be retained next time the file is opened in the BrailleNote.

3.12 When importing an ASCII file, for example a Braille book, that has a single space in front of each line, the left margin is automatically stripped out so that KeySoft doesn't interpret it as if every line is the start of a new paragraph.

3.13 When a Braille translation is involved during printing or embossing, page numbers to be embossed or printed may be nominated. For example, if the Braille document has 6 pages marked by "New Page" markers, these same 6 pages can be printed on the ink printer. This feature is on a document-by-document basis and is accessed from the Format menu, Ink Print Settings, Translation Options, Suppress New Page Markers. The default setting is "Don't suppress new page markers" which means that new page markers in a Braille document will cause new pages in the print document.

E-MAIL NEW FEATURES.

3.14 To emboss or print an e-mail message at the "ready to send" prompt, press 'E' to emboss or 'P' to print.

3.15 To allow e-mail to be sent quickly without e-mail waiting on the server being downloaded, an option to send only the e-mail in the Out-Box is given on exit from the e-mail option. That is, it will not download any e-mail waiting on the server.

3.16 If you have chosen the option not to delete e-mails from the Service Provider, BrailleNote will only download new e-mails received since the previous download. In the old software, all e-mails were again downloaded. This "filtering" only works if the downloaded file is still in the In-box or the Trash folder.

3.17 You can now enter the e-mail action menu from within an e-mail.

3.18 Some Directory of Services names have been changed, and new fields added. The field names are: Service Name, Modem, Phone Number, Service User Name, Service Password, E-mail User Name, E-mail Password, Pop Server, SMPT Server, Log onto Network, Use Software Compression, USE IP Header Compression, Primary DNS Address, Secondary DNS Address, Wait for Dial Tone.

3.19 The additional items from "log onto network" onwards have been put in to help with problems people have experienced connecting to certain Service Providers. The recommended values for various US ISP's may be found on the Web Site, www.cewindows.net/wce/isp.htm

3.20 While entering a password for the first time it may be reviewed with Braille or Speech to check its correctness.

3.21 It is now possible to edit an e-mail to clean out unnecessary information. While reading an e-mail "SPACE with X" toggles Review Off and On.

3.22 All address fields in a received e-mail may now be read.

3.23 The value at a prompt may be copied to the clipboard by pressing "BACKSPACE with K" and pasted by pressing "BACKSPACE with V". So at the "From" field in an e-mail, press BACKSPACE with K and the e-mail address will find its way into the clipboard. This feature can be used when replying to an e-mail.

ADDRESS LIST NEW FEATURES.

3.24 Address list field names have been changed. "Surname" becomes "Last Name"

BRAILLE TERMINAL NEW FEATURE.

3.25 When in the "Terminal for Screen Reader", there is now an item in the Options menu, Braille Display, to turn off the status cells.

4. OTHER ENHANCEMENTS.

4.1 The Internal modem is now the default modem in the Directory of Services.

4.2 Several of the Port errors and Winsock errors have been given more user-friendly wordings now that we know more about the situations in which they occur.

4.3 When exiting a file deliberately created in a non-KeyWord format, the "Save as KeyWord document?" prompt will not be given.

4.4 If an entry is made in a set-up list but "SPACE with E" is pressed to exit the list without first pressing ENTER, then the entry will be retained rather than lost.

4.5 The offered drive and folder when entering the Book Reader will be the last one used.

4.6 The minimum time for display of status messages has been changed from 5 to 1 second.

4.7 The maximum number of times an alarm can cycle has been set to 10. This is to prevent an alarm causing unnecessary battery drain.

4.8 To ease the transition for ex-Blazie users and also Blazie users trying out the BrailleNote on an exhibition stand, for example:

4.9 "SPACE with OW" deletes the character under the cursor. (Equivalent to overwriting the next character)

4.10 There is a compatibility mode in the Utilities Menu, under "Miscellaneous Options" that makes "SPACE with B" do a backspace and puts the Block commands on "ENTER with dots 2,3".
