KeySoft SO, for use on a desk-top computer. This is for the user who already has a Keynote Companion PT, or asub-notebook with KeySoft SN. Either of these may be used as the speech synthesizer for the desk-top.This chapter tells you how to install and start KeySoft ST or SN on your computer. If you are using KeySoft SN, the installation will normally have been done by your distributor. KeySoft SO comes with its own installation Guide.1.2 Fitting Your Speech Synthesizer. If your system has been supplied with a synthesizer and KeySoft is already installed, you may skip the installation sections of this Chapter. In order to install and run KeySoft, your computer must be fitted with one of the following Keynote Gold speech synthesizers: 1. A Stand Alone synthesizer connected to a serial port, or!2. A PC speech card fitted to an internal ISA card slot, or"3. A VoiceCard fitted to a PCMCIA slot.#4. A Companion, or a sub-notebook with KeySoft SN, $operating in Remote Synthesizer mode.%&Follow the appropriate fitting instructions, which are supplied 'in printed form and on audio cassette tape with each synthesizer. (Option 4, the Remote Synthesizer mode, is described in section )1.11.1.3 Floppy Disk Handling.KeySoft is distributed on 3.5 inch floppy disks, and most computers have a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. To insert a disk in the drive, first orientate the disk. The underside has a round metal hub at the center. The leading edge has a sliding metal cover and several small indentations along it. With the hub downwards, insert the leading edge into the long horizontal slot in the front of the drive. Continue to press the disk right
inside the drive, against spring pressure, until it engages with an audible 'click'.
To eject a disk, press the Eject Button on the front face of the disk drive. Keep your hand clear of the disk, so that it can eject freely.Ensure that a disk is not being accessed when you eject it, since this could destroy information on the disk. Listen for the gentle whirring of the disk drive, indicating that it is still in use. Eject the disk before switching off the computer.1.4 Installing KeySoft Under DOS.1.4.1 Using The Install Program.Switch on your computer and wait for it to boot. If you have a separate synthesizer, switch it on too. The synthesizer should say "Keynote Gold", and the screen should display a DOS prompt such as C:\>. If the computer is set up to run an application program automatically, quit the program and return to DOS. The computer will not be talking at this stage unless you already have the MasterTouch screen reader running, in which case you may !leave it running during the installation."#KeySoft is supplied on two floppy disks. Select disk 1 and put $it in the 3.5 inch floppy drive of your computer, which is %usually the "A" drive. Type&'a:install()and press ENTER. That is, press the A key, then COLON, (which is *SHIFT with SEMICOLON). Type the word "install", and finally +press the ENTER key. You will hear:,-"KeySoft Installation for", and the synthesizer details,.followed by, "Installing KeySoft on drive C."The installation program will create a directory called \keynote, and also six sub-directories of \keynote. These are called keylist, keyplan, keyterm, manual, printers, and text. The required files will be copied into these subdirectories. When all the files have been copied from disk number 1, you will be prompted to remove disk 1 and place disk 2 in the A drive, and press any key when ready.
When the installation is complete, you may hear a message about power management, which is discussed later, and then:
"Installation procedure ended. Do you wish KeySoft to run automatically when your computer is switched on?"If you press "Y" in response to this question, the line "ks" will be added to the autoexec.bat file on your computer. This would be the usual choice, and will cause KeySoft to run automatically when the computer is switched on. However, if you don't want this to happen, press "N", and the autoexec.bat file will not be modified. After you have pressed "Y" or "N" in response to this last question, you will hear,"Run KeySoft now?"If you press "Y", KeySoft will start, and you will hear, "KeySoft", followed by the software version number, and then, "Main Menu". If you press "N" instead, you will be placed at the DOS prompt !line. To start KeySoft from the DOS prompt, type "ks" and press "ENTER.#$1.4.2 Switching between KeySoft and MasterTouch%&If the MasterTouch DOS screen reader is already running, you do 'not have to remove it to run KeySoft. If you are using a Keynote Gold Stand Alone synthesizer, you may connect it to either COM1 or COM2 on your computer. The installation program will check which port the synthesizer is
connected to.If there is a device like a printer or modem already connected to the other port, it could be affected by the checking process. In this case, specify the speech port when you start the installation program, by typing:install /com=1, orinstall /com=2for port 1 or port 2 respectively. The automatic test will then not be run.If COM1 and COM2 are already in use, you may connect an SA to COM3 or COM4 if your computer is fitted with these ports. In this case you must specify the port address and the interrupt number when you start the installation program. The format is:install /com=p /irq=n !where "p" is 1, 2, 3, or 4. The interrupt number, "n", may be "selected from 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 or 15, but must not be in #use by another device.$%1.4.5 Choice of Drive and Directory&'By default, the installation program will create a directory (called \keynote on your C drive, and will copy the KeySoft files )into \keynote and its subdirectories. If you wish to use a *different drive or directory, you may include this information +when you start the installation program. For example, to install ,onto the D drive, in directory \dir1\dir2, you would type:-.a:install /path=d:\dir1\dir2/0The path name may be up to 29 characters. The install program 1will create the specified directory if it does not exist. The User's Manual assumes that KeySoft is installed in the \keynote directory of the C drive. If you install to a different directory, please remember that the manual will refer to c:\keynote, and not the directory you have specified.1.5 Installing KeySoft Under Windows. If you have a Windows screen reader, you should switch it off before running the KeySoft installation program, or the two
programs will both talk. You should also switch it off before running KeySoft, but you may use a screen reader while installing the KeySoft icon, as described later.
KeySoft and its installation program run under DOS, so it is first necessary to open a DOS box. At the Program Manager, select the "MS-DOS Prompt" icon with the ARROW keys, and press ENTER. A DOS prompt will be displayed on the screen.Insert the Keysoft floppy disk number 1 in the A drive, and type "a:install", with any parameters that are described in the DOS installation section. Press ENTER and the installation will now proceed. When it is finished you will hear,"Installation procedure ended. Do you wish KeySoft to run automatically when your computer is switched on?"If you press "Y" in response to this question, the line "ks" will be added to the autoexec.bat file on your computer. This would be the usual choice, and will cause KeySoft to run automatically when the computer is switched on. However, if you don't want this to happen, press "N", and the autoexec.bat file will not be modified.!"After you have pressed "Y" or "N" in response to this last #question, you will hear,$%"Run KeySoft now?"&'If you press "Y", KeySoft will start, and you will hear, ("KeySoft", followed by the software version number, and then, )"Main Menu".*+If you press "N" instead, you will be placed at the DOS prompt ,line. You now have two options for running KeySoft under -Windows../1.5.1 Running KeySoft from a Command Line.To start KeySoft from the DOS prompt line, type "ks" and press ENTER. This may also be done from the Program Manager, which you can reach by typing "exit" and pressing ENTER, to leave the DOS box. Then press ALT, followed by "F" (for File), and "R" (for Run), which will display a Command Line.Type "ks" at the command line, press ENTER, and KeySoft will run.

This means that power management software was detected but it was not operating. This type of software is very helpful in extending the battery life on a portable computer. In conjunction with Resume mode,
which is provided on most portables, it allows you to switch the machine off and on again without losing your place or requiring any restart procedure.
If you do use Resume mode, and your portable computer is fitted with a Keynote Gold VoiceCard, it is essential that Power Management software is installed and enabled. This ensures that the VoiceCard is notified when the computer Resumes. Your KeySoft distributor can configure the Power Management software.1.8 Restarting KeySoft.Once KeySoft has been running, the procedure for switching off, and for running KeySoft when you switch on again, depends on your computer.1.8.1 AC-Powered Computers. If your computer is AC powered, or battery-powered but configured to re-boot when switched on, you MUST save any current work before switching off. If you don't do this, you will lose any changes you made since the last time you saved the document. The easiest way of saving your current work is to return to the !KeySoft Main Menu."#When you switch the power off, KeySoft will stop running. Before $switching on again, ensure that there is no disk in the floppy %drive or drives. When you switch on, the computer will boot. If &your choice at installation time was to run KeySoft 'automatically, then KeySoft will start and you will hear, ("KeySoft", followed by the software version number, and then, )"Main Menu".*+If you chose the option not to run KeySoft automatically, you ,will be placed at the DOS prompt, or at the Program manager or -Desk-Top if you are running Windows. To start KeySoft running, .type "ks" followed by ENTER at the DOS prompt or command line, or /select the KeySoft icon if it has been installed under Windows.011.8.2 Battery-Powered Computers. If you have a battery-powered computer, on which Resume mode is in use and Power Management is enabled, you may switch off whenever you wish. However, it is prudent to save your work first, to guard against problems such as flat batteries. When you switch on again, operation will resume at the point where the machine was switched off. You will hear, "Resuming", followed by the current KeySoft function, and you may carry on
from where you left off.On rare occasions the Resume may fail. This can happen if both
the battery and AC power are removed while the computer is operating, or if the computer is switched off while a disk drive or serial port is in use. In these cases the screen will display a message such as, "Resume failure. Press any key to continue", but the message will not be spoken. If you suspect that this has occurred, remove any disk from the floppy drive, press any key and the computer will reboot. If you are not running Windows, restart KeySoft by typing "ks" and pressing ENTER, unless you chose the automatic restart option at install time. In Windows, open a DOS box and at the DOS prompt, type "ks" and press ENTER, or select the KeySoft icon if it has been installed under Windows.1.9 Battery Indicator for Portables.Portable computers generally have an on-screen indicator to show the remaining battery capacity. It is usually displayed by holding down a special key combination, but this display cannot be spoken. When KeySoft is running, you may access the battery indicator with speech by pressing:!"READ with ESCAPE.#$The spoken battery messages will depend on the type of computer, %but most portables except older Toshiba models will generally &report:'(1. Whether the AC line is connected.,-Older Toshiba models will announce the battery capacity unless .the battery goes completely flat, or is removed and replaced. In /this case you will have the option of setting the indicator with 0UP and DOWN ARROW.12	All Toshiba models announce the status of the display backlight, which may be turned off or on to conserve battery power. If you want to leave the backlight setting unchanged, just press ENTER in response to the backlight prompt. Otherwise, press Y or N as required. 1.10 Remote Synthesizers. This option is only available on KeySoft SN. It makes your sub-notebook computer act like a Stand Alone speech synthesizer.
You may then use it as a synthesizer for a desk-top PC, and run MasterTouch or the desk-top version of KeySoft on the PC. To do this, first use a 3-wire null modem cable to connect the serial
port on your sub-notebook to a serial port on a desk-top PC. On the sub-notebook, at the KeySoft Main Menu, press R. KeySoft will say: "Remote synthesizer ready". There will now appear to be a Stand Alone synthesizer connected to the serial port of the desk-top PC. You will be able to run KeySoft or MasterTouch from the desk-top keyboard, and the sub-notebook will speak. The only valid commands on the sub-notebook are READ with ESCAPE to check the power status, and the ESCAPE key to quit the Remote synthesizer mode. It is advisable to plug the AC adapter into the sub-notebook for extended operation. If your sub-notebook has more than one serial port, KeySoft will ask which port you wish to use when you select the Remote Synthesizers option. For example, you #may use KeySoft SO on a desk-top computer, with a Companion, or a $sub-notebook with KeySoft SN, as a synthesizer. If you switch %the speech device back to KeySoft operation, you will have two &copies of KeySoft running, and therefore two copies of the Diary 'and Address Notebook.	(	)While you may reasonably edit different wordprocessor documents *on different machines, it is important to nominate one copy of +the Diary and the Address Notebook as masters.
