Using MS-DOS12.1 Overview.MS-DOS stands for "Microsoft Disk Operating System". This is software which manages the transfer of information between the various parts of your computer. KeySoft uses MS-DOS programs for some of its functions, but you need not understand anything about MS-DOS to use KeySoft.
You may use MS-DOS functions yourself if you wish. For example, you can use it to transfer a file which is not a KeySoft type. It is also possible to run a small application program from the
MS-DOS option, but speech will cease unless the program itself talks, or you have a screen reader such as MasterTouch.12.2 Selecting MS-DOS.Press M from the Main Menu to select MS-DOS. KeySoft will prompt: "Enter MS-DOS. Sure?"Press Y to continue. If MasterTouch has not been installed, KeySoft will say:"MS-DOS. To return to KeySoft type EXIT, then press ENTER at the GREATER THAN prompt."The MS-DOS sign-on message will then be spoken, followed by the prompt x> !"The 'x' signifies the currently selected drive, and the "greater #than" symbol is used to indicate that you may type a DOS command. $Your keyboard input and the DOS responses will be displayed on %the screen and spoken.&'If MasterTouch is installed but not running on your computer, (KeySoft will ask, "Use MasterTouch?" If you do not wish to use )the screen reader, press N, and you will be placed at the DOS *prompt, as previously.+,If you want to use MasterTouch, press Y. KeySoft will stop and -MasterTouch will run. You will be placed at the DOS prompt with .full screen-reading functions, and you may use the MS-DOS /commands or run application programs.01If you are using both KeySoft and MasterTouch, you may continue to switch between the two. Once you have elected to use MT, it will be assumed that you want to use it again and you will not be given the option when you exit KeySoft. This also applies if you ran MasterTouch before KeySoft.12.3 Changing Drives. The drive named before the > prompt is often known as the default drive. Disk operations will be performed on the default drive
unless you specify otherwise. You may need to select a different default drive. The drive
possibilities are dependent on the configuration of your machine. For example, you may want to access the floppy drive, a PCMCIA memory card, or drives on another computer which are redirected with Interlink. To change the default drive, enter the appropriate drive letter followed by a COLON, then press ENTER to select the required drive. All subsequent disk operations will now apply to the newly selected drive unless specified otherwise.12.4 Reviewing Directories. The DOS command DIR is used to review the directory of files on a particular drive. This is one of the most frequently used DOS commands. For example, to review the files on drive C, change the default drive to C as explained in Section 12.3., then Type "dir" and press ENTER.!"A listing of all the DOS system programs is now spoken. This #listing gives the name of each file, along with its 3 letter $extension, the number of characters in the file, and the date and %time it was created.&'If you do not require all that detail, you can get a simple (listing of filenames only by adding the suffix /w to the DIR )command.*+There are many other directory commands available in DOS, ,including commands which use wild card characters to list groups -of related files../12.5 Other DOS Commands.DOS includes numerous commands which are beyond the scope of this manual. Some of the most frequently used commands are listed below:DISKCOPY.Copies complete disks.FORMAT.Formats new disks.
MODE.Sets the mode of operation for the screen, printer and serial port.
COPY.Copies files between disks or directories.MD.Makes new directories.CD.Changes to another directory.RENAME.Renames disk files.12.6 The Function Keys. When you are in DOS, the Function keys F1, F2, etc. are reserved for use by DOS. To obtain the original KeySoft functions of these keys when you are in DOS, hold down the READ key as you press each key. The active keys are as follows: Press READ with F1, for Help. Press READ with F5, for Time. Press READ with F6, for Date. Press READ with F7, for Keyboard Voice. Press READ with F8, for Review Voice.! Press READ with F9, for Slower speech." Press READ with F10, forFaster speech.# Press READ with F11, to Decrease volume, for VoiceCard $only.% Press READ with F12, to Increase volume, for VoiceCard &only.' Press READ with SPACE, toCutoff speech.()12.7 Leaving MS-DOS.To leave MS-DOS and return to the KeySoft Main Menu, go to the DOS prompt, type "exit" and press ENTER.KeySoft prompts: "Main Menu"12.8 Exiting KeySoft.	To exit the KeySoft program and go to a non-talking MS-DOS
prompt, press CONTROL with ESCAPE from the KeySoft Main Menu. Press Y to confirm that you wish to exit KeySoft.
If you are running KeySoft as a DOS task under Windows, the combination of CONTROL and ESCAPE will already be used for the Windows Task List function. In this case, you may press "X" at the KeySoft Main Menu to exit KeySoft. To restart KeySoft from DOS, type "ks" and press ENTER.End of Chapter 12.
