Braille 'n Speak
The original personal data assistant, beloved by thousands since 1987.
Caution - Braille 'n Speak may be habit forming! This breakthrough product
represents technology at its most useful. Your data, entered in Braille, is
electronically stored, spoken and ready to work on as you wish. Other
functions give you information like time, date or daily appointments.
With Braille 'n Speak, it's easy to take notes in the boardroom or the class
room.
You can write, review and edit, keep an instant-access address "book",
store up to 800 Pages of Braille, translate Braille into print -- all on
your standalone Braille 'n Speak. Braille 'n Speak's small size,
durability and ease-of-use make it a good choice even for young
children. No previous computer experience is necessary. All that's
required is the knowledge of Braille.
Its range of features and capabilities have made Braille 'n Speak the
product of choice among even the most demanding, computer-savvy adults.
You can "lighten" your workload literally. A clock, appointment calendar
and calculator are things you probably use everyday. Since all three are
built into Braille 'n Speak, you have just eliminated the need to carry
them along separately in your backpack or briefcase.
Braille 'n Speak can Connect You to the Larger World of Computing
It's hard to think of anything you can't accomplish when using Braille 'n
Speak alone, or with other computer products. We've listed a few popular
uses to capture your imagination. You can probably think of more.
Output your Braille 'n Speak files to hard copy with most any Braille
embosser.
A regular inkprinter will produce typewritten output of your files when
you use Braille 'n Speak's built-in Braille-to-print translation
feature. Remember, you can choose from among 14 different BNS language
models.
Braille 'n Speak can become a speech synthesizer for your computer. In
fact, we have produced a special interface guide (see print page 60) that contains
step-by-step instructions on how to link BNS with more than 10 popular
products.
Braille 'n Speak and your modem unlock access to the world of on-line
networks, services and information. It's a fun way to communicate with
people who share your interests.
Send and receive email from your Braille 'n Speak by way of the
Internet.
When you use PCMASTER or WindowsMaster software, the Braille 'n Speak
keyboard (and command structure) can be used to enter text into, and
read the screen of, a host computer (See pages 22 and 40.)
* Braille 'n Speak, with our disk drive accessory, can read IBM-compatible
PC disks. What a convenient way to read computerized books! (See page 18.)
* Braille 'n Speak can run external software for further customization of
your unit. (See pages 52-53.)
New Features Make Braille 'n Speak Even Easier to Use
Wouldn't you love to upgrade Braille 'n Speak in the convenience of your
own home or office? Our new Flash ROM feature allows you to, by
yourself, do just that. It lets you install software upgrades with only
a disk -- no need to return your Braille 'n Speak to the factory.
Something else you'll like is the enhanced battery system. Much more
powerful than before, this battery pack will recharge your unit in only
two hours. And once it's been recharged, Braille 'n Speak will run for
25-30 hours. Less downtime means better productivity! Plus,
charge-protection circuitry safeguards your data.

Lite Touch Telephone Communicator
Introducing a smart new system designed especially for deaf-blind users
A collaboration between Blazie Engineering and Enabling Technologies has
just produced the Lite Touch portable telephone communicator. It's an
exciting new system designed especially for people who are deaf-blind. Lite
Touch consists of three small products: the 18-cell Braille Lite personal data
assistant, the SuperPrint E modified TDD, and a tiny signal detector.
Unlike using an ordinary TDD, the Lite Touch system makes face-to-face
conversations possible.
The products link together in seconds and operate for hours at a time on
internal batteries. Braille Lite and the TDD can be separated easily and
used independently, also.
Highly versatile Braille Lite lies at the heart of this superb
communications system. Its many uses as a talking word processor, document
generator, personal data assistant, Braille-to-print translator and more are
fully described on page 10.
If you already own Braille Lite, simply purchase the Lite Touch upgrade.
Your Braille Lite is ready to integrate - it needs no modification to
function as part of Lite Touch. Telephone access for the Lite Touch user
is provided through a "smart" microprocessor that enables characters
sent from or received by the TDD to automatically scroll across Braille
Lite's 18-cell refreshable Braille display. The little signal detector,
about the size and shape of the average beeper, emits a strong vibration
when your telephone detects a ring, busy signal or audible indication
that the other party is speaking. Slipped into a pocket, its warning
message will engage attention without occupying your hands. Lite Touch
is easy to learn to use, and you get full documentation in both print
and Braille.

Lite Touch Specifications
Size:
Braille Lite, 8-1/4" x 5" x 1-3/4".
SuperPrint E TDD, 11" x 13" x 2-1/2".
Pocket-sized signal detector, 4" x 3-1/2" x 1"
Weight: All three components weigh less than 6 lbs. total
Power Source: Internal, rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Also runs on
standard household current via AC/DC adaptor
Warranty: 90 days from date of receipt
Service Contract: The Blazie Engineering Safety Net of Service is
available for $460.00 per year renewable annually. See Page 15 or call
for details.
Accessories:
Battery charger/AC adaptor, earphone, serial interface cable, cassette

Perkins-style keyboard

service contract eliminates all worry about possible "glitches." If you

and eliminates worry about downtime. Renewable, one-year agreements are
currently available for Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak, Braille Lite,

Type 'n Speak
Popular Type 'n Speak is perfect for people who prefer a QWERTY keyboard.
You've heard the expression, "different strokes for different folks." With
that in mind, we developed Type 'n Speak. It's the personal data
assistant for people who prefer to make their strokes on a standard
typewriter keyboard. Like Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak is durable,
portable and lightweight enough to go anywhere your schedule takes you.

Type 'n Speak's useful features and many capabilities are the same as
detailed for Braille 'n Speak. If you can type, then you can use Type 'n
Speak. No previous computer experience is necessary, and you don't have to
know Braille. In fact, we're discovering that Type 'n Speak has found a
small niche among sighted users who appreciate its versatility. For
example, a person with reading comprehension problems may find it easier
to review material by listening, instead of reading.

Type 'n Speak Specifications:
Size: 12" x 6" x 1-1/2"
Weight: about 2 lbs.
Power Source: A nickel-cadmium battery that will power unit for 25 hours
between charges. Also runs on standard household current via AC adaptor
Warranty: 90 days from date of receipt
Service Contract The Blazie Engineering Safety Net of Service is
available for $125.00 per year renewable annually. See Page 15 or call

The Disk Drive Accessory
This device provides unlimited data storage on 3.5 inch disks.
Think of the disk drive as a "data transfer station." With it, you can
save any file from your personal data assistant onto a standard 3.5"
disk. Your disk will be formatted in MS-DOS, and can now be read by any
IBM-compatible PC. Some people simply transfer data for storage, to back
up file memory on their Braille 'n Speak, Braille Lite or Type 'n Speak.
Of course, data can flow into your personal data assistant, too, using the
disk drive. Now you can hear, in synthesized speech, any text file stored on
any IBM-compatible 3.5" disk. It's a great way to read computerized books,
and more.
In its newly-redesigned case, the disk drive is easier than ever to take
along. About the size and weight of Braille 'n Speak, it's simple to
work on-the-go. No previous computer experience is necessary. Just plug
the disk drive into your personal data assistant. It has its own set of
friendly, easy to use commands within your Braille 'n Speak, Braille
Lite, Type 'n Speak, or Braille Lite 40.

Improved Battery Life
Those who like to work while traveling, commuting or just sitting in the
backyard will appreciate the disk drive's enhanced battery system. Now
it's possible to work for around 5 hours between charges!

Works Well With Other Serial Devices, Too
By way of an optional cable, you can control the disk drive from any serial
device. We know people who love what they can accomplish using this
accessory with their Versa Brailles, for example.

Another optional cable is produced especially for the Kurzweil Reading Edge.
You can use any communications program on your PC such as PROCOM or TELIX to
send files to the disk drive accessory. ASCII files are simple to transfer
too.

The Braille Blazer
Get the most for your money with this versatile, portable embosser.
Forget any preconceived notions about big, loud or immobile Braille
embossers. The 12 lb. Braille Blazer is different! This combination of
true portability and unique engineering is so advanced, we might have
named it "the Trailblazer."

You Get "Two for the Money"
When you purchase a Blazer, you're actually getting two machines in one.
First, of course, you get a dependable Braille embosser. The Blazer's
carry-along size allows it to handle paper up to 8-1/2" wide, in any
length. It does a great job on computer paper, Braille paper, and smaller
items such as tractor-fed index cards and labels.
Secondly, the Blazer functions well as a speech synthesizer for any home,
office or portable computer. Just combine your favorite screen access and
Braille translation software with the Blazer. Your result? A very capable
speech system to see you through most any workday situation.

The Blazer's built-in synthesized speech also helps to keep
configuration of your machine a quick and simple process. You can even
instruct the Blazer to print "sideways" for spreadsheets and screen
dumps. You'll easily produce clear, crisp Braille graphics using the
Blazer and a software program such at ETgraphX or pixCELLS (see print page 51).

Three Material Weights to Match Your Needs
The Blazer has three embossing modes that enable you to use various papers,
or plastics, according to your needs:

* Light paper mode gives you quality Braille on standard paper. It's a great
choice for proofreading, lists, memos or any "throw-away" application.
* Regular mode is geared for Braille paper, in whatever size you prefer.
* Plastics mode was developed for the production of Braille signs and labels
on lightweight polymer materials.
The Braille Blazer handily accommodates many sizes of paper and plastics.
Computer paper, smaller items such as tractor-fed index cards and
labels the -- list goes on.
We've said it before, we believe it: the economical versatile Braille Blazer
may be the only embosser you'll ever need! It was built with your budget
in mind.

PC MASTER
This fully-developed, thoroughly tested software system puts complete
personal computer (PC) control in the hands of the blind or visually
impaired operator. Once installed in your PC, PCMASTER passes control of the
PC to your Braille 'n Speak, Braille Lite or Type 'n Speak.

PCMASTER has become all you need to completely operate any PC. No need to
buy expensive speech synthesizer boards or boxes; no need for other screen
access programs. With PCMASTER, Braille 'n Speak keys become the computer
keyboard; the Braille 'n Speak memory becomes the computer screen!

Now you can type Grade 2 Braille directly into your word processor or
editor. Turn on the reverse translator, and you type in Braille while
regular print characters enter the computer.

Are you currently a Braille 'n Speak, Braille Lite or Type 'n Speak user?
Then you already know most of what is needed to operate PCMASTER, and open a
new world of accessibility.

Imagine: take PCMASTER with you to a computer store, or an unfamiliar office
(perhaps on a business trip). You'll be able to immediately operate
different PC's without bothering to learn about their specific keyboards.
You won't need to ask "Where is the control key? ... the Alt key? Where
is the backslash?" because they are all right there on your personal
note taker. The PC keyboard is active at the same time, so you have a
choice.

Language Master has full speech controls to read screens or speak individual
words at the speed you choose. There are three ways to hear spellings and a
complete pronunciation guide. But the heart of this small device is its
outstanding language references. It contains dictionary definitions, a

up to 26 messages and will play them back at your command.

The Franklin Medical Digital Book System
Access key medical reference sources in seconds . . . wherever you are.
Fast and amazingly capable, Franklin's Digital Book System is an
essential tool for anyone in the medical profession. It combines the
most authoritative medical references with search-and-retrieval
technology to give you access to vital information - anytime, anywhere!

System hardware is available in two versions. Choose either the pocket-sized
or desktop model, described below:
* The Digital Book System (DBS-2): Index card-sized for on-the-go research!
It's only 3" x 5" and weighs just 4 oz. The DBS-2 features a five-line
display screen and holds one or two digital books.
* The Desktop Digital Book System (DBS-2D): An expanded version of the
DBS-2. It has a 10-line display screen and can hold up to three digital
books at one time. The DBS-2D measures 5-3/4" x 5-1/2" x 1" and weighs 11 oz.

The digital books are the "software." Each digital book is the size of a
matchbox (2-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 1/4") and holds 200 megabytes of
uncompressed data. (That's the equivalent of 20 printed Bibles.) Digital
books just snap into place and you're ready to read. Simply by entering
one or two key words, the entire text of a publication is searched.
Vital information is retrieved instantly. You can switch from one
cartridge to another at the touch of a key, or cross-reference volumes
simultaneously.

The library of available medical titles includes the following:
* Pocket PDR (Physician's Desk Reference)
* Smart Coder - utilizes flash ROM technology to allow an annual update of
information
* The Merck Manual
* DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)

* Principles of Surgery Companion Handbook, 6th Edition
* The Medical Letter Handbook of Adverse Drug Interactions
* The Washington University Manual of Medical Therapeutics

BAT Personal Keyboard
A compact seven-key unit makes one-hand touch typing possible. The BAT
Personal Keyboard is a remarkable, efficient device that is especially
attractive for its adaptive qualities. With the BAT, people with good
use of only one hand and the ability to learn a simple input system can
fully access the standard computer keyboard.

Just as with Braille 'n Speak, data is entered by means of chording:
pressing combinations of keys simultaneously. It's easy, too - most
people learn the alphabet and numbers in about one hour.

Your hand rests naturally on the built-in wrist pad, fingers over the
four "home" keys and your thumb over the three thumb keys. Very little
arm or hand movement is required.
The BAT is lightweight, compact and flexible. Use it alone, in pairs, or
with other input devices (such as a traditional keyboard or a mouse).
Just plug the BAT into the keyboard port of your computer and begin to
enjoy the advantages of a free hand.

ASAP: Automatic Screen Access Program
ASAP is a system that provides speech access to any MS-DOS applications
software. Instead of forcing you to work hard at identifying a screen
layout, ASAP does the job. It automatically focuses on light bars, soft
cursors, pop-up windows and other techniques that make software friendly
to the visual user.
ASAP actually employs artificial intelligence to decide what screen area
would catch a sighted user's eye, and then announces that material. It makes
your computer do the routine work, so you can concentrate on the task at
hand. ASAP works very well with Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak, Braille
Lite and Braille Blazer.
Call us to obtain a demonstration version of this unique system.
MAJOR FEATURES
* Instant Silence lets you press a key to stop speech in progress and move
on to new material.
* Turbo Browse gives you the ability to skip over a little, or a lot, of
text. Pass by repetitions or non-relevant information.
* Quick Review means that you don't have to exit a special mode just to
look at the screen. With ASAP, just use your numeric keypad to review in
detail any portion of the screen.
* Auto Read lets you read an entire document with a single command. Great
for reading large amounts of material.
* Lexicon feature handles pronunciation exceptions, acronyms, proper nouns
and more. Add as many words to the lexicon as you like.
* ASAP requires less than 55K of your computer's memory. It's small and very
powerful!

JAWS for Windows
JAWS for Windows offers all the features that made the original JAWS
program so popular, and then some. Its exclusive design conforms to the
Windows User Interface and doesn't conflict with the keys used by
Windows applications.
MAJOR FEATURES:
* "Smart Screen" technology is one of the reasons JFW is so easy to use.
It intelligently looks at the screen, determining what to speak, so
unfamiliar applications can be used immediately. Menus, dialog boxes and
help files are all spoken without the need for user set-up.
* JFW uses two cursors. One tells you where you are typing, or what menu
item you have selected - the other roams around the screen traveling and
seeing where the first cursor cannot go. Each window remembers its last
cursor position - so you'll never have to go searching when you switch
tasks.
* Built-in helpers pop up at the touch of a key. JFW calls them "Wizards,"
but you'll call them terrific time savers and simplifiers.
* An innovative bit-map recognizer looks for icons and other graphic
symbols and will speak a text label for each. It also recognizes and
will speak button bars, toolbars and 3D custom controls.
* New JAMAL - JAWS Macro Application Language - allows you to automate
tasks and create sophisticated configurations for any Windows program.
Power users can avoid hearing unwanted data, yet never miss important
information.
In addition, JAWS for Windows offers CD-ROM compatibility, a one-year
limited warranty and a clearly-written print manual. You also receive a
critically-acclaimed cassette tutorial that is several hours long. Full
technical support rounds out the picture.

The Accent Series
The Accent speech synthesizer is a high-quality, text-to-speech
converter. With your computer, it reshapes ordinary ASCII text into
intelligible speech. Accent's unlimited vocabulary capability, plus its
many feature options, make it a useful and very flexible output device.
Three different Accent models are available, to cover a wide range
of system configurations, cost requirements, and environmental
parameters. Each is a plug-in card, and is described separately below.
All internal models use Device Drivers to provide interface either
through DOS or BIOS. Accent-SA uses a standard serial port. All models
employ the standard Accent text-processor, which can speak in two modes.
In the text mode, Accent will produce ordinary speech, employing
grammatical rules, punctuation marks and tonal inflections. You can
also, through software commands, customize voice characteristics such as
speech rate and pitch. In the spell mode, all text including punctuation
will be spoken letter by letter.
Accent's standard vocabulary is larger than the 20,000 most commonly
used words. For special, customized vocabulary, a standard downloadable
custom dictionary (DCD) utility is provided in addition to the syllabic
input capability. The DCD hardware is built in for all Accent models.

The features listed below are standard for all models of Accent:
MAJOR FEATURES
* Four groups of software commands, including system option, speech
option, status request and index marker commands.
* Speech rate from about 60 to 800 words per minute
* Rapid response time
* Index marker feature for precise text/speech synchronization
* Miniature phone jack for speaker or headphones
* One year warranty covers parts and labor

Each model is described below:

amplifier and high speeds of up to 800 words per minute. The
Text-to-Speech algorithm is in ROM, so it uses only 2K bytes of computer
memory. The on-board 8085 microprocessor does the text to speech
translation, so it requires none of the PC's CPU time.

Braille-Term is easy to install and learn. Best of all, its

MegaDots
No matter how you like to work, MegaDots is receptive to your habits.
Introducing MegaDots, Version 1.5A: It offers better Braille, easier
customization and dozens of new features. This flexible, intuitive
translator liberates you from the complexities of Braille and computers.
It works with nearly 100 word processing programs - including Macintosh
files - so it's a breeze to import any document and set it up for
Braille translation. And every element of the Braille is under your
supervision, even if you don't know any Braille rules or arcane
commands.
With MegaDots, what you see on the screen is what you get on paper.
(This is also true if you work in Braille.) Whenever you want to see how
the Braille looks, just press the Translate key. You can skip around,
edit or enter more Braille. Data entry can be done using a six-key
technique, or as "Inkprint in Braille," where the words you type become
Braille as you enter them.
For sighted users, MegaDots has a familiar look and feel. Pull-down
menus, point-and-click mouse interaction and colorful screens make
working a pleasure. You can view the Braille itself in one of five
display modes.
MegaDots works on IBM compatibles with a 286 processor or better and at
least 640k RAM. You need DOS 3.3 or higher. For best results, we
recommend a 386 processor or better, 2 megabytes of RAM and, for sighted
users, a color monitor.
"Smart" Spell Checker Now Included
An extra perk for MegaDots users is its exceptional Spell Checker.
Unlike conventional spell checkers, this one is revolutionary in its
ability to correct optically scanned material. MegaDots knows that
optical scanners make visual mistakes and has a system for changing
nonsense back into the right words. You'll love how easy it is to
operate, especially when using voice or refreshable Braille, because
you're not trapped in a menu. You can use the identical commands you use
for normal reading and editing to fix errors, join words or paragraphs,
and so on.
MAJOR FEATURES
* Reference manual, interface guide, command summary and Nemeth guide
all available on-line.
* "Perfect round trip" translation allows changes in print or Braille at any
time.
* Textbook, Literacy and Magazine formatting.
* MegaDots produces high quality Braille in Grade Two, Grade One, Computer
Braille Code, Linear Braille Format.
* French, German, Italian and Spanish Grade One (including all accent marks
and special punctuation).
* Multiple "user interfaces" designed for standard screen, voice access,
large print access, refreshable Braille access, and several combinations.
* MegaDots' own large-print screen option enlarges the characters on the
screen. Or you can use a separate screen enlargement program.
* Find/Replace facility and Macro system.
* Large print output on dot matrix printers in 14- and 18- point fonts.
* Auto-correct Braille (automatically fix Braille data entry errors).
* Baby Nemeth translator eases production of math and science related
material.
* Special features for Braille transcribers (call us for details).
* Free demo disk available upon request.

to make learning Braille easier. For example, some students learn best
reading Braille "between" Grade One and Grade Two. Beginner Braille

contractions, and can choose to start off by using just two or three of
them. It is easy to accommodate several students at once, each reading a
different level of Braille.
Beginner Braille requires MegaDots 1.5 or 1.5A. If you need to update an
earlier version of MegaDots, you can purchase the update and Beginner
Braille for $100.00.

Braille Base

At last, a Database management program for your Braille n Speak, Type n
Speak or Braille Lite! Blazie Engineering's new Braille Base Program is the
answer to all of your unorganized information nightmares. Braille Base is
flexible, so what you use it for is completely up to you.

-- Keep track of names, phone numbers, addresses, birthdays, etc. all in one
place
-- Use Braille Base as an appointment calendar
-- Organize your vast music, computer program or book library
-- Create and organize your list of favorite sites on the World Wide Web
-- Great for teachers, salespersons, students and anyone with lots of data
to organize and sort
-- Sort your information alphabetically, numerically, or by date
-- Create lists or tables in print or Braille
-- Enter information in either Grade 2 or computer Braille

You may create as many databases as you wish with practically no limit
to their size or the number of categories within each. Editing, deleting and
adding information or categories to any database is a breeze using the same
commands you already know from your Braille n Speak, Type n Speak or Braille
Lite. Braille Base's powerful search and sort functions allow access to your
data like never before. Imagine being able to create a separate list from
within your address book of only those people who live in Boston, or of those
who have birthdays in September, or maybe even of those who only live in Boston
and also have birthdays in September. The possibilities are endless, and so is
the number of ways Braille Base can make your life easier and more organized.
At only $49.00, Braille Base is the one program you can't afford to be without.

Welcome to Graphit, a new and exciting program from Blazie
Engineering. This program allows you to use your Braille printer,
in conjunction with your PC, Braille 'N Speak, Type 'N Speak, or
Braille Lite, as a graphing calculator. You can enter up to ten
equations or inequalities, and then the Graphit program will output
the graph of the equations or inequalities that you have entered to
your Braille printer. You have total control over the final
output. You can select to print the graph on a full grid, just an
x and y axis, or with no axes or grid. Graphit also gives you full
control over the scale of the graph, allowing you to set the range
of x and y, the grid size, and the number of units per grid square.

Graphit for the Braille 'n Speak, Type 'n Speak or Braille Lite costs
$49.00.
Graphit for the PC costs $149.00.
