DOCUMENTATION FOR THE COMPUTER TAPES OF THE
DOMESTIC MAIL MANUAL
DISTRIBUTED BY GPO

The tapes include *all* of the text, *most* of the tables, but *none*
of the graphics contained in the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM).
Whenever a graphic or table is missing, the string "EXHIBIT NOT
SHOWN" appears with the title of that item.

Embedded in the text are copymarks (codes) which indicated the
structure of the document. They are used to mark paragraph numbers,
exhibits, tables, and some font characteristics (bold, italics, etc.)
All codes begin with a [ and end with a ]. These two character do
not appear anywhere else in the text.

The DMM number structure is as follows (with the copymarks):

[H1]Chapter 1
[H2]110
[H3]111
[H4]111.1
[H5]111.11
[H6]111.111
[H6]111.112
[H5]111.12
[H4]111.2
[H3]112
[H2]120
.
.
.
[H2]190
[H1]Chapter 2

There are 6 numbered paragraph levels, each marked with a [Hx]
copymark, where x is an integer between 1 and 6. Each chapter has at
most 9 [H2]-level subsections. Each of those 9 subsections will have
at most 9 [H3]-level subsections, and so on. In other words, the
[H2] level will appear no more than 9 times in any chapter. Under
any one [H2] level, the [H3] level will appear at most 9 times
(before the next [H2] is encountered). Under nay one [H3] level, the
[H4] level will appear at most 9 times (before the next [H3] is
encountered). This 9 rule continues all the way down to the [H6]
level.

Other common copymarks include:

1.      [OL1]   - for lists of items with letter of the alphabet as labels;
2.      [P]     - for the beginning of a paragraph of straight text;
3.      [E9]    - for the beginning of an exhibit;
4. [VT] - for the beginning of a table that has been specifically
                designed to fit on a standard 80 character monitor
                screen;
5. [XT] - for the beginning of a table that is not useful for
                on-line viewing of text and which should be skipped
                (all the way to the next [ET] copymark defined below);
6. [ET] - for marking the end of both [VT] tables and [ET]
                tables;
7.      [BD]    - for beginning bolded text;
8.      [LT]    - for shutting off bolded text;
9.      [IT]    - for beginning italicized text;
10. [RO] - for shutting off italicized text.
