[IDOVERVIEW]Overview
Overview mode

The text and graphics that appear on a Lunar 95 screen are just an enlarged version of a section of the 'real' screen.

This can be demonstrated as follows:

Enter Lunar's Overview facility, by pressing and holding down <CTRL> and <BackSlash>.

You will see the screen change to a normal display and a rectangle appear in reverse video on the screen. This is called Lunar 95's Overview facility because it gives you an overview of the 'real' screen. The text that appears in the rectangle is what Lunar 95 magnifies.

Move the rectangle around by moving the mouse.

Finally, leave Lunar's Overview facility bye letting go of the hot key.

If, in the Preferences option however, you have 'interactive mode' selected, windows continues to work whilst overview mode is active and you must press the overview hot key again to exit overview mode.

[FRAME]Frames
Frames

Lunar 95 has four scroll margins at the top, bottom, left and right hand side of the screen. These four margins are collectively known as a frame.

Lunar 95 has two types of frame:

1. A Mouse Frame
2. A Cursor Frame

As soon as the mouse pointer is moved into the Mouse Frame, Lunar 95 will attempt to scroll the screen in the appropriate direction. Similarly, as soon as the text entry cursor is moved into the Cursor Frame, Lunar 95 will attempt to scroll the screen in the appropriate direction

[]
To change the scroll margins:

Click on the MOUSE FRAME button to change the mouse scroll margins.

OR

Click on the CURSOR FRAME button to change the text entry cursor scroll margins.

In the Adjust Cursor Frame or Adjust Mouse Frame dialog box there are a number of controls.

You can now change the individual margins of the frame by altering the Top/Bottom/Left/Right scroll bars. The number indicated represents the margin width as a percentage of the distance from the edge to the centre of the screen.

You may also select one of 3 pre-set frame sizes by clicking on the appropriate button.

[FRAMESLIDERS]Scroll margin scroll bars
Scroll margins

These 4 scroll bars let you set the width of the top, bottom, left and right scroll margins.

The number indicated represents the margin position as a percentage of the distance from the edge to the centre of the screen, and is independent of the magnification level.

To alter these values, use the cursor keys or click and drag the scroll bar with the mouse.

[FRAMEPRESETS]Frame pre-sets
Frame pre-sets

You may select one of 3 pre-set frame sizes by clicking on the appropriate button. The sizes are 10, 60 and 99. If you select 99, the mouse pointer will be locked into the centre of the display (except when you reach the edge of the screen or window).

[MOVEMENT]Movement
Movement

The movement settings determine the distance that the Lunar 95 screen will scroll by, when you move the mouse into a frame.

[FLIPSIZEH]Horizontal Move
Horizontal Move

You can change the horizontal distance that the Lunar 95 screen scrolls by when you enter the left or right scroll margin.

You do this by altering the Horizontal Move scroll bar.

The measurement is in pixels.

[FLIPSIZEV]Vertical Move
Vertical Move

You can change the vertical distance that the Lunar 95 screen scrolls by when you enter the top or bottom scroll margin.

You do this by altering the Vertical Move scroll bar.

[MENUMARGIN]Menu Margin
Menu Margin

When Windows displays a menu, you can alter how much of the menu (how many options) are displayed above and below the currently selected option. In other words, you can choose to always place a highlighted menu option about half way down the enlarged screen, or to have it moving close to the top or bottom of the screen.

You can do this by altering the Menu Margin setting, which is located from the Movement button. This determines the vertical frame size when a menu is displayed.

[IDREADING]Line View
Line View mode

Line View mode allows you to view the currently selected window as a single line moving across the centre of the Lunar 95 screen. This is a form of the popular 'scrolling' feature of our earlier software.

To enter Line View mode, press:
<CTRL> and <Num Pad Insert>

To start the text scrolling, press:
<SPACE>

To leave it, press:
<ESC>

Lineview mode will exit if anything happens in Windows95. Do not press any mouse buttons whilst in line view mode.
[]
While in Line View mode:

To start or stop a smooth scroll of the currently selected window across the Lunar 95 screen, press: <SPACE>
To increase the speed of the scroll, press: <Cursor Up>
To decrease the speed of the scroll, press: <Cursor Down>
To move to start of the previous line, press: <Cursor Left>
To move to start of the next line, press: <Cursor Right>
To move forward three quarters of a screenfull, press: <ENTER>
To increase magnification, press: <PgUp>
To decrease magnification, press: <PgDn>
To quit, press: <ESC>

[]
You may find it convenient to control Line View mode entirely from the numeric keypad using the above keys. On the Lunar 95 display new lines are denoted by ||.

On machines with an LCD display, the continuous scrolling in Line View mode will almost certainly appear as a blur on the screen. This is due to time that is takes the crystals to change their orientation.

So the best method of viewing text in Line View mode on an LCD display is to advance three quarters of a screenfull at a time using the <ENTER> key, rather than using <SPACE> to continuously scroll the text.

[]
To change the way Line View mode works:

Click on the LINE VIEW button.

This will bring up the Line View Settings dialog box, which lets you do the following:

1. Control whether or not new lines are shown.
2. Set the minimum height in pixels of the text/graphics to be viewed in Line View.
3. Set the minimum height in pixels of the space between lines.

[IDLINEBREAK]Display Line Breaks

[IDAPPSETTINGS]Settings
Settings

You can have different Lunar 95 settings for each Windows application that you use. Lunar 95 will automatically save the settings for each application in an .INI file. Applications are identified automatically by Lunar 95, and the name of the currently running application is displayed in the Lunar 95 control panel.

When an application is run, Lunar 95 searches its list of known applications and loads the appropriate settings for that application. If Lunar 95 finds a new application that it hasn't encountered before it will use the default settings.

For each application you can specify whether it uses its own settings, or the default application settings.

[APPLICATION]Application Selection
Application Selection

This list-box displays the application name that you are changing the settings for. When you enter Lunar 95 normally the application that you switched from will be selected automatically. Only applications that are currently running are displayed therefore to change the settings for an application you must first load that application.

When you are changing settings, the actual settings in effect will be those for Lunar 95 (because it is Lunar 95 that is currently active), and the settings for the application that you are editing will not take effect until you return to that application.

To edit the settings for Lunar 95, you must select Lunar 95 from the Application list.

[APPSETTINGS]Use Application Settings
Use Application Settings

If 'Use Application Settings' is selected, the application displayed in the application box has its own settings.

The state of all the controls in Lunar's control panel reflect the applications settings.

[DEFAULTSETTINGS]Use Default Settings
Use Default Settings

If 'Use Default Settings' is selected then the program displayed in the application box uses the 'Default Application Settings'.

All the controls in Lunar's control panel are greyed out, and you may not alter them.

To change the 'Default Application Settings' you must select it from the application list (it is always the first item).

Lunar 95 will still remember the applications custom settings, even if it set to use 'Default Settings'.

[COPYDEFAULT]Copy Default
Copy Default

The COPY DEFAULT button copies the 'Default Application Settings' into the current application settings overwriting the existing settings.

[SETHOTKEYS]Set Hot Keys
Set Hot Keys

You can change the hot keys for the various Lunar 95 actions. A hot key combination is defined as one or more of the Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys (called the modifier keys), plus one other key on the keyboard (called the action key).

There is no distinction between the left and right Shift and Ctrl keys. The right Alt key on extended keyboards (labelled as "Alt Gr") is treated by Lunar 95 as a Ctrl-Alt combination. The modifier keys may be pressed in any order (or previously held down) while the action key is pressed.

The action key selected represent the physical key on the keyboard, regardless of the state of Num-Lock on the numeric keypad. The action key may be any key with the exception of Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause & Num-Lock.

Different Windows applications work with different keystrokes. You might want to change Lunar's hot keys so that they differ from your application's keystrokes. Beware of setting hot keys that clash with your application's hot keys.

[]
A hot key combination recognised by Lunar 95 will be discarded and NOT passed onto the application.

To alter the hot keys click on the SET HOT KEYS button.

This will pop up the Set Hot Keys dialog box in which you may adjust Lunar's hot keys for a particular application:

As soon as you click OK in this box, the chosen hot keys will be active for the application displayed in the 'Application' list-box.

[HOTKEYLIST]Hot Key Action
Hot Key Action

The hot key action display the current hot key that you are defining.

These include:
Magnify	- enlarge by a factor of 2x
Reduce	- shrink by a factor of 2x
2x to 9x Magnifications - select a magnification
Overview - enter overview mode (see Overview mode)
Line View - scroll the current window (see Line View mode)

You may not select a hot key that clashes with any other hot key, or one that is the same as a common Windows hot key (such as <ALT> and <TAB>).

[HOTKEYALT]Modifier Keys
Modifier Keys

The Alt, Ctrl and Shift check boxes show the state of the modifier keys for the hot key. If the check box is selected then that key must be pressed for the hot key to work.

You may have any combination of these controls selected to define your hot key.

Be careful when using the Alt key, because this is Windows 'Menu' key and you may experience side effects when using it.

The 'Alt Gr' key on the keyboard activates both Ctrl and Alt at the same time.

[HOTKEYKEY]Hot Key Selection
Hot Key Selection

This pull down box lists all the possible key selections that you can use as a hot key. Click on the one you want to use.

The key list represents the physical keys on the keyboard, regardless of the state of the Num-lock key. Numeric key pad keys are all prefixed with 'Num-Pad'.

[COLOURCHANGER]Colour Changer
Colour Changer

The Lunar 95 colour changer lets you modify the physical colours of the display. It is only available in 16 or 256 colour modes.

Use this button to access the colour changer controls.

[ENABLECOLCHANGE]Enable Colour Changer
Enable Colour Changer

This option allows you to switch the colour changer feature ON and OFF. With a check mark inside the box the colour changer will be enabled

[COLOURSLIDERS]Colour Sliders
Colour Sliders

The Lunar 95 colour changer lets you modify the physical colours of the display. It is only available in 16 or 256 colour modes.

Use the mouse or keyboard to adjust the Contrast, Brightness and Colour of the display. These sliders operate in a similar way to the controls on a TV set.

The Colour Adjust slider 'rotates' the palette without adjusting the brightness.

The Invert Brightness control inverts the intensity of the display. Colours will remain the same colour, only the intensity will be inverted. You can also use this to invert the screen on some LCD displays to get the correct Windows colours.

[DEFAULTS]Defaults
Defaults

Click on Defaults to restore Lunar 95's default colour settings.

[PREFERENCES]Preferences
Preferences.

This button accesses a dialog box which contains various system preferences.
You may need to change these settings to optimally configure Lunar 95 with your video card.

[SCROLLDISPLAY]Scroll Display
Scroll Display when moving

Lunar 95 uses one of two different methods for scrolling the display, when you move the mouse pointer around the desktop. Which method is best for you depends on your personal preferences and the capability of your video card.

If this check box is selected, Lunar 95 moves the entire display in the direction of the scroll and then updates the edge of the screen with new data. If the mouse pointer is within the scrolling area this may result in some flickering of the mouse pointer. However, on most video cards Lunar 95 can scroll faster using this method.

If this check box is not selected Lunar 95 redraws the entire display whenever it needs to scroll. This may be slower but the mouse pointer will remain stationary and won't flicker.

[MOUSEEFFECTS]Custom mouse whilst unmagnified
Custom mouse whilst unmagnified

If this check box is selected the custom mouse pointer will be used when the screen is not being magnified. However you may notice that the system runs slightly slower and you may not be able to move the mouse pointer whilst the system is busy (as in magnified mode).

When this is active, Lunar 95 is effectively performing a 1x magnification of the screen.

[DOUBLEPOINTERS]Double size pointers
Double size pointers

If this check box is selected, Lunar 95 will double the size of all pointers so that they are 64 pixels wide and high.

[SMOOTHING]Image Smoothing
Image Smoothing

This option enables Image smoothing, or 'font smoothing' as it is sometimes known.

Image smoothing improves the magnified image by replacing some of the jaggy edges and corners of enlarged characters and graphics by smooth curves and straight lines. This will cause text to have a more 'rounded' look and become easier to read.

You can toggle image smoothing on or off with a hot key;

<CTRL> and <Num Pad 8>

Lunar 95's image smoothing system handles black text on white or colour backgrounds and white text on coloured backgrounds. If you have odd colour combinations then the image smoothing may cause the image to be more difficult to read. You can allways toggle this feature off to see what the original shape or character lookes like.

[]
Image smoothing uses a lot of CPU power so you will notice that magnification is slower when you have this feature on, especially with lower magnification factors.

Image smoothing is only availiable in 256 colour and 16-bit high colour modes. In other modes the check box will be greyed out.

[OVERVIEWMODE]Overview mode
Overview mode

You can select one of four different styles of appearance of overview mode, an inverted area, inverted background, and two shaded styles.

If Interactive Mode is selected then Windows will continue to run whilst overview mode is active. You must press the overview mode hot-keys a second time to exit overview mode.

[OK]OK Button
OK Button

Click on the OK button to confirm any selection you may have made and exit the dialog box. No settings take effect until you click on OK.

[CANCEL]Cancel Button
Cancel Button

Click on Cancel to exit the dialog box and discard any changes you have made. No settings will be saved and any changes you have made in this dialog box will be lost.

[STAYINWINDOW]Stay to Window
Stay to Window

If the 'Stay in Window' check box is selected, artificial mouse boundaries are created around the currently selected window. This places a restriction on the mouse pointer, so the display does not easily move away from the current window. These mouse boundaries are removed if you move the pointer beyond the edge of the window. (You need to try this yourself to see the effect).

[FOLLOWWINDOWS]Track new Windows
If the 'Track New Windows' check box is selected then Lunar 95 will move to any new windows that are created or become active.

The new window may be centred if the Centring check box is selected.

[CENTERING]Centring
Centring

If the 'Centring' check box is selected, then objects such as menus and small dialog boxes will be centred on the display (if they will fit).

If 'Centring' is not selected, the display will move the minimum amount possible to make the object completely visible.

If the object is too large for the display, then it may be aligned to the top left of the screen, depending on the setting of 'Top left of Window'.

[TOPLEFT]Top Left of Window
Top Left of Window

If the current focus is bigger than 32 pixels high, (about 5cm in 4x magnification), it is considered by Lunar 95 to be a main window, as opposed to being a gadget or control. If this is selected, then Lunar 95 will move to the top left of such windows when they are selected. If it is not selected, Lunar 95 will move the minimum distance it can to get the window wholly on the display. If the window is smaller than the display then the 'Centring' setting will apply instead.

In some programs (e.g. Corel Draw and Aldus Pagemaker 4.0) the application changes the focus by itself, and this can cause Lunar 95 to jump around the display. Turning this option 'off' will prevent this and make such programs more usable.

[TRACKING]Tracking Strategy
Tracking Strategy

Lunar's strategy is to follow the most recent change of focus. This means that if you move the mouse, press a key, pop up a dialog box, or pull down a menu, Lunar 95 will magnify the part of the screen that changes as a result. The mouse has maximum priority, so you will always be able to use the mouse to move around the screen.

Lunar 95 remembers where the most recent input came from and will only track such input. This means that you may use the mouse to move away from a text entry cursor and the display will follow the mouse without jumping back to the cursor.

You may move back to a text entry cursor after moving away with the mouse (providing Follow Cursors is enabled) by pressing any key on the keyboard, which will instruct Lunar 95 to follow the keyboard focus. You may press the <SHIFT> key to do this which will not cause the cursor to move.

[]
When a menu is selected from the keyboard, Lunar 95 remembers the previous position of the screen. Providing that the mouse is not moved during the menu selection process, Lunar 95 will return to that previous position after you exit the menu.

To prevent too much jumping of the display and to speed things up, the display is frozen whilst Windows is busy. This means that you will not be able to watch the display being updated by Windows, but will have to wait until updates are completed before regaining control.

To display continuously changing images (such as the Windows clock) the display is updated roughly twice a second if the mouse is stationary and no keys are being pressed.

[MOUSETOSCREEN]Mouse to Screen
Mouse to Screen

If 'Mouse to Screen' is selected, then one of three things will happen:

1. If the mouse pointer is not visible, the pointer is repositioned in the centre of the display, without moving the display.

2. If the mouse pointer is visible, but is within the frame region, it is repositioned with as little movement as possible, so that it is no longer within the frame region.

[SCREENTOMOUSE]Screen to Mouse
Screen to Mouse

If 'Screen to Mouse' is selected, the magnified display window will jump to the position of the mouse pointer.

[MOUSETOFOCUS]Mouse to Focus
Mouse to Focus

If this check box is selected, then the mouse pointer will be moved automatically to the vicinity of the current focus, when you change the current focus from the keyboard.

[TRACK]Track
Track ...

When this check box is selected, Lunar 95 will track the cursor or objects selected in the pull down menu.

Different applications have different types of cursor so you can select the cursor type from the pull down list that most closely matches your application.

Lunar 95 has already been configured for use with a variety of the most common Windows applications.

[FOLLOWBOX]Track Highlight
Track Highlight

If this check box is selected Lunar 95 will follow highlighted text, such as the text under icons, or the file selection highlight in Windows File Manager.

It also follows all highlights around dialog boxes in applications.

[FOLLOWMENUS]Track Menus
Track Menus

When this check box is selected, Lunar 95 will track the highlighted item when pull down menus are used. Lunar 95 will move the screen horizontally to get the menu wholly onto the display.
