TeleSensory

OsCaR Systems
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the high-tech solution for visually impaired people who want to read printed documents. TeleSensory's enhanced OsCaR scans text and provides immediate and affordable print recognition.

OsCaR recognition
OsCaR uses the most advanced recognition technology to convert scanned material into text that can be used in off-the-shelf word processing, desktop publishing, database or spreadsheet programs. OsCaR's software recognizes text and makes it accessible to visually impaired individuals using adaptive technology.
OsCaR can read a variety of printed documents, even those with complex layouts and columns. OsCaR identifies important text attributes like headlines, bold, italics, and underlining.
OsCaR scans and recognizes simultaneously so you can read continuously. OsCaR highlights each word on the screen as it is spoken and OsCaR lets you immediately correct words in the scanned document.
OsCaR converts graphic images into raised dots for braille embossing on a TeleSensory braille printer. It automatically rotates the images internally if placed on the scanner upside down or sideways. An automatic contrast setting selects the best degree of contrast for the scanned page.

OsCaR power
The recognition software provided with OsCaR is the same as the recognition software used in the award-winning OmniPage OCR package from CAERE Corporation. This OCR power lets you convert text into files you can edit, manipulate or review at your leisure. OsCaR harnesses this state-of-the-art OCR to run under PC-DOS or MS-DOS 3.3 or higher with your existing access product.
- OsCaR is completely menu-driven so you don't need to know special DOS commands.
- Context-sensitive help is always available. Press F1 to get help at any point.
- OsCaR scans and recognizes simultaneously so you can read continuously.
 - OsCaR automatically rotates documents if they are placed reversed or sideways.
- OsCaR lets you immediately correct words in the scanned document.
- Recognition can be achieved in two languages simultaneously - with a choice of eleven languages.
- OsCaR highlights each word on the screen as it is read.
- Orientation of text can be upright (portrait) or sideways (landscape).
- OsCaR automatically collates a two-sided document after scanning all the front sides then all the back sides.
- OsCaR reads text as small as 6 point and as large as 72 point.
- Used with VersaPoint or Everest braille embossers, OsCaR can convert black and white images into corresponding tactile graphics.

System requirements
The complete OsCaR system runs on a 386, 486, or Pentium microprocessor computer with 1 empty slot, 8 megabytes of system memory, and a hard disk drive with 12 megabytes of available space. You also need a high-density 3.5" floppy disk drive and an EGA or VGA monitor.
The OsCaR system includes:
- Custom OsCaR user interface software specially designed to use with access devices.
- Compact Hewlett Packard ScanJet 3p high- resolution scanner and interface card. Sheet feeder is optional.

Supporting cast
OsCaR interfaces with most speech and braille systems, as well as TeleSensory's family of products including ScreenPower Speech, PowerBraille 40, and Vista computer screen enlarger.

Using OsCaR
OsCaR is a powerful and flexible system that can perform a variety of useful tasks for you. Here are a few examples of some of the more popular uses:
Reading machine
If you have a computer and a speech or braille device, OsCaR can turn your PC into a reading machine. Place a document on OsCaR's scanner and listen to it or read it with your braille display.
Word processing
After you scan a document with OsCaR, OsCaR can instantly convert the document to your word processor format. It will even load your word processor for you and call up the converted file.
Braille production
If you have Duxbury or MegaDots on your computer, OsCaR can take a scanned document, convert it to Grade 2 braille and send it to your braille embosser.
Tactile Graphics
OsCaR can also scan drawings and diagrams and send them to your VersaPoint or Everest embosser.

OsCaR accessories
Optional accessories include your choice of translator: Duxbury or MegaDots for Grade 2 braille translations.
