Also, the KeySoft file "KeyTerm and the Internet" describes some of the functions of the KeySoft terminal program, KeyTerm.1. IntroductionKeySoft is a friendly, integrated, talking personal information management package for visually impaired people, comprising a wordprocessor, spelling checker, scientific calculator, appointment calendar, address book and Internet terminal. KeySoft was specifically designed with blind users in mind. This demonstration version of KeySoft will allow you to try out all its functions and discover how easy it is to use, but has some restrictions on its use. If you wish to purchase the full version of KeySoft, contact your nearest distributor as listed in section 6 of this document. 2. What's New?!"For those already familiar with KeySoft, this new version makes #KeySoft even more accessible by supporting more models of $synthesizer. If you already have one of the synthesizers listed %in section 3 of this document, and would like to take advantage &of KeySoft's friendliness and ease of use, you can do so without 'having to buy a new synthesizer.()Also refer to the What's new file (WHATS.NEW in ASCII format and *What's new in KeySoft format).+,-3. Supported Synthesizers./This KeySoft demonstration program supports all current models of 0Keynote GOLD synthesizer. These include the Keynote GOLD PC, a 1version for the IBM PC ISA bus; the Keynote GOLD SA, a stand 2alone battery powered portable synthesizer; and the Keynote GOLD 3VoiceCard, a PCMCIA (PC Card) synthesizer for portable computers 4and laptops equipped with PCMCIA card slots.56DECtalk synthesizers are now also supported. The models supported are the DECtalk Express external speech synthesizer and the DECtalk PC internal speech synthesizer (DECtalk is a trademark of Digital Equipment Corporation).4. InstallationTo install the demonstration version of KeySoft, insert the disk into your disk drive and type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL if you are using the B: drive). The installation program will check for the presence of a synthesizer and if it finds one, will install the
demonstration program.
5. About KeySofta) KeySoft allows you to:* Access the Internet, bulletin boards, or electronic mail networks using the KeyTerm communications program.* Write notes, letters or reports with attractive layouts and type styles, using the powerful KeyWord wordprocessor.* Check spelling and make corrections with the aid of spoken suggestions, using the spelling checker.* Add up a grocery bill or perform complex scientific calculations, using the KeyPlus calculator.* Schedule or review appointments and set alarms for critical events, using the KeyPlan diary.* Enter or retrieve addresses and dial telephone numbers, using the KeyList address list manager.* All of the KeySoft programs are supported by context-sensitive spoken help messages, prompts and menus, making learning to use them an enjoyable experience. !b) No screen reader required"#Most talking computers for the blind require two programs to make $them function - an application program, such as a word processor %to perform the task in hand, and a screen reading program to &generate speech. The application runs exactly as it would for a 'sighted user, while the screen reader hides in the background (trying to guess which screen information the visually impaired )user might wish to hear. Since the application may use any number *of visual cues for a sighted user, while making no concessions to +a blind user, this dual program approach has severe limitations. ,Inevitably, too little or too much is spoken and vital -information may be missed../Is there a better way? There certainly is. KeySoft! KeySoft 0completely eliminates the guesswork element of the dual program 1concept. KeySoft is a single integrated suite of programs with 2speech built in. Although it supports the visual display, KeySoft 3has been designed to use speech as the primary display medium. 4Every element of each KeySoft application speaks exactly what is 5necessary - neither more nor less.6c) Simplicity and PowerSimplicity is one of the most refreshing features of KeySoft. Its intuitive behaviour and consistent operation make it easy to learn. Comprehensive spoken assistance is provided in the form of context-sensitive help messages, prompts and menus, and the user's manual is readily accessible. As well as ease of use, KeySoft provides formidable power and capability for the experienced user.
d) Integration with compatibilityKeySoft's individual programs are fully integrated with each
other so information can be easily passed from one program to another. This means, for example, that an address or a calculation result can be directly inserted into a document. With a single key press, any program can be popped up from any other program at any time. This internal unity is not at the expense of compatibility with the outside world. KeySoft can read and write WordPerfect and DOS file formats. It can also transfer data through an RS232C serial link to another computer, or to a non-DOS computing system such as an OCR reader or Braille notetaker.e) System requirementsAn IBM-compatible computer with at least 512Kbytes of free RAM and 2Mbytes of free hard disk space is required. KeySoft requires DOS 3.3 or later, and will operate as a Windows or Win95 DOS task.f) KeySoft Versions !KeySoft ST:For any PC with a Keynote GOLD synthesizer"KeySoft SN:For a sub-notebook with a VoiceCard or SA. Allows #the sub-notebook to act as a synthesizer for a $desktop PC.%KeySoft SO:Lower cost option for a desktop PC. Uses an &existing sub-notebook with KeySoft SN (or a 'Keynote Companion) as a synthesizer()*6.
