ALVA Braille Terminals

ALVA Braille Terminals (ABTs) are the most desirable and sought-after braille displays available in
the world today, known for their ease-of-use, power, and long-term reliability.

Four Impressive Models
HumanWare knows that applications vary and users require different solutions. ABTs come in four
models: two portable and two desktop versions. The two battery operated models have 23 and 43
braille cells. The desktop models have 45 and 85 braille cells. All four versions have eight-dot braille
cells. If your application does not require dots seven and eight, one Hot Key allows you to convert
the display from eight-dot cells to six-dot cells.

Extra Status Cells
Fundamental to efficient computer access is knowing the location of the system cursor, which line your
braille display is reading, which attributes are active, and the relationship of those attributes to the
characters on the screen. All ABTs have extra status cells that display this information, so your left
hand can monitor status information and attributes while your right hand reads the text on the braille
display.

Grade II Braille Mode
We know that most users enjoy reading text material in Grade II braille. The second you turn on the
cursor, the cord on which it sits is converted back to Computer Braille without altering the rest of the
Grade II document. This enables you to immediately edit any word on which the cursor is sitting
without leaving the Grade II reading mode.

Touch Cursor Technology
ALVAs patented Touch Cursor Technology allows you to touch a small dot above any braille cell
on the reading display and route the system cursor to that location of the text. This makes edition a
fast and easy process. Touch Dots are also located over the extra status cells, thus allowing you to
instantly jump to a pre-selected reference point on the screen. This is a tremendous time saver.

Functionality with Good Looks
ALVA Braille Terminals are the winners of the prestigious Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen Design
Award. Designed by people who are blind or visually impaired, ABTs ergonomically blend the feel of
high quality with superior functionality.

Ugradability and Options
The ABT's state-of-the-art hardware enables ALVA to regularly upgrade its MS-DOS software, while
other developers are giving ABTs access to Windows environments.

Mountbatten Brailler

When you purchase a Mountbatten Brailler you buy flexibility. It enables you to work in braille or print
and to easily translate between the two. All of this versatility exists in one stylish and portable package,
controlled by simple, easy-to-remember commands. No knowledge of computers or complicated
software is necessary!

The Mountbatten Brailler is an electronic, battery operated braille writer that has a modern, comfortable
braille keyboard, built-in memory, auto-correction features and extensive formatting controls. The
Mountbatten can be used as an embosser for a computer, or as a braille translation device. It can
translate from print into braille or braille into print.

These impressive capabilities mean that the Mountbatten Brailler is useful throughout a childs
education, from early use as a braille writer in developing braille literacy, to use as an embosser once
the child is literate, and ultimately with a computer in higher education or employment situations. No
other product comes close to the power and flexibility of the Mountbatten in all of these applications.

A Braille Writer
The ergonomically designed braille keyboard is one of the Mountbattens most important features. It
is easy to use for all ages and capabilities. The rub-out and overstrike" (erasing and correction)
features are easy to use, and extensive formatting controls such as tabs, centering, and adjustable
margins, make formatting simple and accurate.

A Memory Notetaker
With a standard 32K or optional 128K of memory, the Mountbatten can be used as a silent note-taker.
Turn the embosser off, and type directly into the memory. Stored files can be embossed later or sent
to a printer or computer for word-processing or storage.

An Embosser
When the Mountbatten is connected to any computer, information on the computer can be sent directly
to the Mountbatten and embossed. The Mountbatten can use almost any size or weight of paper.
Variable impact adjustments and multi-strike settings also enable the use of a wide range of embossing
material (such as nylon, plastic or metal foils) that can be embossed with braille for signs and other
labeling needs.

The Mountbatten also has a graphics mode. In other words, it can produce raised line drawings and
pictures.

A Forward Translation System
The Mountbatten will translate standard files (e.g. WordPerfect) into braille format, and then emboss
them onto braille paper. For people who dont know braille, a computer keyboard can be connected
directly to the Mountbatten. Information typed on that keyboard can be automatically converted to
Grade 2 Braille. This is an ideal way for sighted people to leave braille notes for braille users.

 A Back Translation System
The Mountbatten will translate the braille into print and send it to a printer. This is a very important
feature for education, especially where the student is mainstreamed and is required to produce papers
or notes in print. For office workers, this feature enables the braille user to write notes in braille while
providing a printed copy to co-workers.

Low Vision

Viewpoint VGA

Compact Unit, Hand-held Camera, Computer Access

If you have limited vision and cant read normal print on a page or a computer screen, the Viewpoint
VGA will open new doors for you. For the first time, there is a compact, economical system that can
combine, on one screen, an enlarged image of reading materials or handwriting with a magnified
computer display.

Viewpoint VGA offers three models, each incorporating a unique hand-held CCD camera. You can also
pick a screen type and size to suit your visual needs.

If you need to access a computer in your job, your studies, or in your leisure pursuits, choose one of
the computer compatible models of the Viewpoint VGA, and integrate all your large print information
on one display screen.

To magnify your handwriting add a Handwriting Stand to any Viewpoint VGA system.

Viewpoint VGA is a truly elegant solution to large print access needs, yet it takes up no more room
on your desk than a personal computer. In fact, if you already have a computer with a VGA display
screen, the Viewpoint VGA control unit and camera are all you will need to create a complete large
print work station.

Reading with the Viewpoint VGA is a very simple process. Just switch on the system, place the camera
on the reading material (the camera is instantly in focus), select a suitable magnification with the push
button controls, and start reading.

The Viewpoint VGA uses a revolutionary CCD camera that fits comfortably in your hand and can be
rolled over any printed or handwritten text to produce an enlarged image on the display screen.

Magnification ranges from eight times to thirty-two times. The appropriate size is selected
electronically with the touch of a button. Perfect focus is maintained at each magnification setting.

Image contrast can be set to a high level for best text visibility, or to a low level to view photographs.
Display text in either positive (dark on light) or negative (light on dark).

Screen type can be chosen to best suit the reading needs of the individual from the following options:

Viewpoint VGA Mono 14 has a 14" diagonal, tilt/swivel, black and white screen that is attached by
thumb screws to the control unit. A handle and storage pocket for the camera allow the user to
pick up the entire unit in one hand to carry it from room to room or between work and home.

Viewpoint VGA Multi 14 has a 14" diagonal, tilt/swivel, color screen that allows the user to display
the enlarged text in any one of eight selectable colors.

Viewpoint VGA Mono 19 uses a standard NTSC-compatible color television. Because these standard
TV monitors come in varying sizes, it is possible to select screens up to 32 inches. If the user
already has a compatible television, it is only necessary to buy the camera and control unit.

If your limited vision has prevented you from writing by hand, you should be able to start writing again
with the aid of the optional Viewpoint VGA Handwriting Stand. This compact, collapsible stand, on
which the camera may be placed, allows the pen and paper to be magnified as large as necessary for
you to write letters or notes, or to fill out forms. The Handwriting Stand incorporates its own lighting
and optics, which can be activated with the touch of a switch.

Operate a Computer

The Mono 14 or the Multi 14 reading systems described above may be purchased in computer
compatible versions. The suffix PC after the model name denotes this option.

These models can display the enlarged computer text and the camera image, either simultaneously or
alternately.

The Viewpoint VGA requires no additional hardware in the computer in order to operate. Any VGA
compatible screen magnifier will work with the Viewpoint VGA.

Many computer programs and hardware systems are available to magnify text on the computer screen.
Zoomtext is an excellent example of a screen enlarging program that is also available from HumanWare,
Inc.

Viewpoint VGA can split the display screen into two windows, one above the other. The split can
be positioned by the user, and the

enlarged computer image can be displayed in one section while the camera image is displayed in the
other.

Viewpoint VGA can also rapidly flip from the full screen computer image to a full screen camera
image. To split the screen, a footswitch is included with the PC package. An on-screen menu
makes setting up of user display options very simple.

If you purchase a reading-only version of the Viewpoint VGA and later find you need to access a
computer, a simple, low cost upgrade can be installed in your system by your service agent to obtain
the full computer access capability.

ClearView Classic

A True Value Among Lower-Cost CCTVs!

The ClearView Classic is a revolutionary CCTV in that it has very high quality and value at a
surprisingly low price. Many people are willing to give up features like monitor size, windows,
underline/ overline, various color options, and height adjustments, if the CCTV itself is solidly built.

When prices go down, we must ask ourselves, at what point does the cost get so low that it begins to affect
the quality and functionality of the CCTV?
Intelligent customers are just as interested in value as they are in price. Thats why HumanWare has
ensured that its new ClearView Classic has the same, well-known quality and reliability for which its
high-end models are famous.

ClearView Classic costs less, but the essential elements of a CCTV have been maintained without the
slightest loss in quality. When choosing a lower-cost CCTV, be sure to compare these fundamental
elements:

Magnification - Without an acceptable zoom ratio, the user's access to a wide range of print sizes
and media may be limited. The purpose of a CCTV is to magnify what the camera sees, but you
will search far and wide to find any CCTVs, (except ClearViews), that have a 1 to 10 zoom ratio.
In fact, the ClearView Classic uses this same high-quality lens as the high-end ClearViews!

Camera - When HumanWare introduced the first CCD digital camera to the U.S. CCTV market,
they started a trend that vitually every other CCTV manufacturer has copied. Naturally, the
ClearView Classic uses the latest in CCD digital cameras.

Monitor - Only the ClearView Classic has a flat-screen, paper-white monitor, specially designed to be
easy on your eyes whether youre using the positive or negative reading modes.

Tilt-swivel monitor - Height adjustment mechanisms are expensive to produce, so manufacturers
are removing them from their low-end CCTVs. To effectively compensate for this loss, a tilt/swivel
monitor is essential! Of course, the ClearView Classic's monitor has integrated this tilt/swivel
    capability as a standard feature.

Lighting - If you look closely at the light source on top quality CCTVs, youll find fluorescent
lights because they provide a broad and even light source for the camera. You guessed
    it...ClearView Classic uses fluorescent lighting!

X/Y table - An X/Y table needs to be large enough to handle a variety of reading materials and
sturdy enough to facilitate smooth movement and stable operation. Compare any other X/Y table
to that of a ClearView Classic and you'll find the only competition comes from high-end
    ClearViews.

So when you buy a lower-cost CCTV, do you want price or value...

    or do you want both?!?

flat on the desk. Its surface is touch sensitive and is divided by raised tactile ridges into 25 lines,

at the corresponding point on the screen to be spoken. The MasterTouch Tablet allows the user to
explore the text on the screen at any time by scanning around the tablet with a finger tip. No special
actions are needed to activate the tablet.

Personal Productivity at a bargain price!

This integrated suite of applications is designed as a personal productivity tool specifically for people
who are blind. Keysoft uses a Keynote GOLD speech synthesizer. It does not require any knowledge
of MS-DOS or screen reading software. Keysoft is simple, fast and intuitive to use, yet has the
functionality to satisfy power users. No knowledge of DOS is required to use Keysoft. People love the

that are essentially a visual barrier to direct access.

The Keysoft Suite includes:

  Keyword
A full function word processor provides instant access to any number of documents, allows fast
navigation within a document by word, sentence, paragraph or page, and allows documents to be
merged or sent to or from other computers or applications. Logical commands and real time help

scientific calculator. Keysofts friendly environment allows the user to cut calculations from
Keyspell and paste them into Keyword files.

Keysoft is to the Ears
What MS-Windows is to the Eyes
Questions and Answers about Computer Environments

Why do we use computers?

To increase our efficiency & productivity!

How do people who are sighted make basic computer activities easier?

They use Windows!

How do people who are blind make basic computer activities easier?

They use Keysoft!

When not using Windows, how do people who are sighted increase their personal productivity and
organization?

They use portable organizers, i.e. notetakers, schedulers, alarm clocks, phone lists, calculators, and E-
mail terminals.

How do people who are blind increase their personal productivity and organization?

They use Keynote Companions (see pages 35-36).

How can Keysoft be compared to Windows?

The fundamental elements that make these environments friendly are essentially the same in both
Windows and Keysoft.

In what ways?

  Familiarity
All applications have a consistent interface. This interface is specifically designed to allow the user
to feel-at-home in the environment, regardless of the application being used.

  Confidence
Once users know one application, they feel comfortable trying another, even without referring to a
   manual.

  Intuition
Where Windows uses a visual logic, Keysoft uses an auditory logic. In both cases, accessing and
using applications is natural and intuitive.

  Help
Keysoft goes one step further with regards to context sensitive help. Regardless of the application
or the users location within an application, Keysoft is constantly prepared to tell the user specific
information about how to use the environment or application, or how to review or edit the
   document.

  Integration
With both Windows and Keysoft the commands for reviewing and editing a document are always the
same as the application. In other words, there are no extra commands to learn beyond those
required by the application. (Screen readers force users to learn a whole new set of commands in
addition to those commands required by the environment and/or the application.)

  Multiple Applications
Both Windows and Keysoft allow the user to run a variety of applications simultaneously. With a
single keystroke, the user can switch from one application to another, cut and paste data between
applications, and feel confident that other applications, not currently in use, are frozen exactly where
they were left for immediate access at a later time.

  Transferability of Data
Even though a user may be fortunate enough to work in an environment that is friendly to him or
her, like Windows or Keysoft, other computer users may not be so lucky. Therefore, most Windows-
based wordprocessors allow users to save their files in either ASCII or WordPerfect for DOS
   formats. So does Keysoft!

  Results Oriented
Both Windows and Keysoft are opening a new era to computer users. Computer users are finally
able to achieve greater productivity within an environment that has been specifically designed for
   them.

Are there times when people who are blind will need to access Windows directly?

Yes, but this is totally dependent on their jobs. Success in our competitive world is ultimately based
on the quality and timeliness of the results, not the method by which those results were achieved.

So whats the best solution for someone who must use Windows?

Although tasks vary greatly from job to job, most computer users spend up to 80% of their time doing
wordprocessing, organizing their schedules, attending meetings, taking notes, making phone calls,
retrieving messages, leaving messages and occasionally performing a few basic calculations. Most blind
people can perform these functions within Windows with the aid of a screen reader, but not nearly as
efficiently as with Keysoft or a Keynote Companion.

What about the other 20% of their time?

If the job absolutely requires Windows access, then WindowBridge or Protalk can provide that
access. However, it is important to remember that graphics are designed to make computing easier
for sighted people. Keysoft and Keynote Companion are designed to do the same for people who
are blind or visually impaired.

SoundProof
Writing and Reviewing Aid
for People with Learning Disabilities

SoundProof is a screen reading program specifically designed for people with learning disabilities.
When combined with the Keynote GOLD speech synthesizer, SoundProof enables the user to hear each
word or letter as it is typed. When reviewing written material, SoundProof will highlight each word as
it is simultaneously spoken. This multi-modal feedback enables people with learning disabilities to
improve their focus and comprehension when reading, their productivity and accuracy when writing, and
overall efficiency in general computer usage. SoundProof operates in an MS-DOS based environment
and allows the user to add its friendliness and support to any standard, text-based software.

Writing Aid
Proofread and review by simultaneously hearing and seeing words
  Hear awkward sentences or phrases
Hear words spoken as they are typed into the computer
Easily catch punctuation and grammatical errors
  Increase writing speed and efficiency
Readily choose the correct word from a spell-check list
Determine if what has been written makes sense
  Increase writing independence
  Hear omissions, substitutions and additions
Reading Aid
Hear text-based material presented on the screen such as tutorials, help menus, etc.
Simultaneously hear and see words written on the screen
Visually highlight each word as it is spoken
Listen to computer text written by others, such as letters, books-on-disk, etc.
Capitalize on multi-modal and neuro-impress approaches to improve reading and spelling
Enhance comprehension by listening to the text
Convert printed text to speech in conjunction with optical character recognition systems

SoundProof works with most MS-DOS, text-based programs. It is easy to set up, learn and use, and
is available in laptop packages, as well as desktop kits.

In addition to the Keynote GOLD synthesizer, there is also a version of SoundProof that works with later
model DECtalk synthesizers.

Keynote Companion

"Within one second of switching on the Keynote Companion, the user can be typing a note, looking up
a telephone number, making an appointment, or reading correspondence received through electronic
mail."

Keynote Companion is a portable information management system designed especially for people who
are blind or visually impaired. It uses Keynote GOLD speech output and incorporates Keysoft's suite
of application software, i.e. wordprocessor, spelling checker, calculator, planner/calendar, address list
manager, and E-mail terminal.

These programs have been specifically developed for voice output and are friendly and intuitive to use.
No computer knowledge is required. Screen reading programs are unnecessary.

Unlike laptop and notebook computers, the Keynote Companion, in its smallest configuration, is only
about the size of a videotape cassette and weighs just 2 lbs. A visually impaired user can always have
the Keynote Companion at hand to obtain instant access to a wealth of information. Within one second
of switching on the Keynote Companion, the user can be typing a note, looking up a telephone number,
making an appointment, or reading correspondence received through electronic mail. Keynote
Companion can assist visually impaired people to enhance their personal productivity in school, at work,
or at home.

High Quality Speech
Keynote Companions synthesized speech is the same highly intelligible speech as used in the Keynote
GOLD SA, PC and VoiceCard synthesizers. This speech has been widely acclaimed by the visually
impaired community for it pronunciation accuracy, responsiveness and multilingual capabilities.

Ventriloquism
The Keynote Companion can turn your desktop or laptop computer into a ventriloquist! If you run
Keysoft on your desktop or laptop, or any compatible DOS or Windows screen reader on your PC, and
connect a serial cable, your Keynote Companion will act as an external synthesizer providing high
quality speech from any text-based application program.

Powerful Yet Friendly
Keynote Companions built in software is Keysoft, an outstanding suite of programs, which allows a
visually impaired user to:
Write notes, letters or reports with attractive layouts and typestyles, using the powerful Keyword
   wordprocessor.
Check spelling and make corrections with the aid of spoken suggestions, using the Keyspell utility.
Add up the grocery bill or perform complex scientific calculations using the Keyplus calculator.
Schedule or review appointments and set alarms for critical events using the Keyplan
   planner/calendar.
Enter or retrieve addresses or telephone numbers, using the Keylist address list manager.
Access remote databases, bulletin boards, or electronic mail networks using the Keyterm
   communications program.

All of the Keysoft programs are supported by context-sensitive spoken help messages, prompts and
menus, making learning to use them an enjoyable experience. Most computer printers can be used to
print documents, appointment schedules, calculations, address lists or E-mail correspondence.

Text 2000
For students who would like to receive their textbooks on disk, the American Printing House (APH)
is producing these books to order. Simply by adding the special Text 2000 software upgrade to the
Keynote Companion, these textbooks can be made accessible.

ALVA Braille Terminals (ABTs)
A portable ALVA Braille Terminal is ideal for students who want to read Text 2000 textbooks in Grade
2 braille. Naturally, the same ABTs can still be used with other computers for full MS-DOS access.

A Word about Palmtops and Motor Cycles

They're both ideal if you need something:
  for your personal use.
that's light weight and easy to handle.
that has a microprocessor/engine powerful enough to get the job done efficiently, but not so excessive
   that it's unwieldy.
that's instantly available because of its size.
that's fast and responsive to control/ drive.
  that's fun to control/drive.
that has great hours-per-charge/miles-per- gallon because it carries only what's needed to accomplish
   the task at hand.
that squeezes into places other computers/vehicles cant fit.
that travels to places others cant go.
that stores/hauls only whats needed to achieve/reach the goal/destination.
that's intuitive and easy to operate.
that helps the user/driver stay focused without a lot of distractions.
that can be connected-to/hauled-behind another larger computer/vehicle, to ensure all this freedom
is still available, even when you're stuck behind a desk/wheel.

Palmtops are computers, just as motor cycles are vehicles. But motor cycles are not cars, or trucks
or RVs. So if you want more storage, power, and access to other applications, without giving up your
freedom, add Keysoft and MasterTouch to your desktop computer. Keynote Companion becomes your
synthesizer, so you can have your RV and your freedom.
