Explanatory Notes

Most APH Books Are Now Made When You Order Them

Most of our textbook enlargements and braille transcriptions listed in this
catalog are now produced "on demand." You demand it--we produce it!
Receiving publisher permissions and preparing the masters for production
are completed ahead of time. APH then produces the "hard copy" upon
demand--YOUR demand!

Type Sizes of Large Type Books

The type size of books enlarged by APH is dependent on the type size of the
regular print books from which our versions are made. The following chart
provides examples of enlarged type based on an image area of 8 1/2 x 11
inches.

--If the page size is 8 1/2 by 11 inches and 8 point type, it will enlarge to
between 10 and 12 point type
--If the page size is 8 1/2 by 11 inches and 10 point type, it will enlarge to
14 point type
--If the page size is 8 1/2 x 11 inches and 12 point type, it will enlarge to
between 16 and 17 point type

Measuring Type Size

The actual size of the printed image resulting from different type faces of
the same point size may vary. This is the result of the way print was
originally produced--what is now called type setting. In this traditional
printing method, type size was determined by the size of the block of wood
on which the type face was mounted. Consequently, industry type size
information is of limited value in selecting print material for use by
visually impaired persons because of the inconsistency in the size of the
images resulting from different type faces.

To address the need for an actual size standard for the print image of large
type materials especially prepared for visually impaired people, many years
ago APH developed and used a physical measurement standard (in 1/1000's
of an inch). At that time the goal was to produce large type materials in an
18-point type size as determined by these standards.

Although production methods for large type have changed such that not all
large type materials produced by APH meet this goal, the standard we have
developed might prove helpful to you in determining when enlargement of
print materials is needed. Obviously, the needs of the individual student
must be considered.

Type Size Guidelines

The following measurements, in 32nds of an inch, reflect the approximate
size of the standards developed by APH. To determine type size using these
standards, measure the outside of the image of a lower case letter "o," top
to bottom. It may be of help to use a magnifying glass when doing so.

Point Size Measurement in 32nds of an Inch
	14 point	3.3
	16 point	3.8
	18 point	4.3
	20 point	4.7
	22 point	5.2

Contents of This Catalog

This is a combined catalog containing virtually all book titles offered for
sale by APH. The titles offered largely consist of textbooks up to the 12th
grade, although the catalog also contains academic tests, materials for
parents and professionals, and recreational/supplementary reading titles.
New for 1996-97 is the inclusion of braille music pieces!

APH offers materials in a variety of media. Our media include the following:

--	Braille Books: These are the traditional, high-quality braille books
offered by APH for many years. Listings of braille books in the print edition
of this catalog appear in red ink.

--	Large Type Books: These books are reproduced from the regular print
editions using a xerographic process. Most new APH large type books now
have full-color covers that match the regular print editions.

--	Braille/Print/Recorded Books: These books offer a multi-accessible
approach for primary students. APH purchases regular textbooks that are
colorful and already in large type. We then insert clear plastic braille pages
and provide a cassette tape of the book. Listings of braille/print/recorded
books in the print edition of this catalog appear in red ink.

--	Century Series Braille Books: This is a special series of braille books
designed to make braille more affordable to the average reader. The APH
Endowment Fund underwrites the cost of these titles so that they can be
offered at the same price as the regular print book. Listings of Century
Series books in the print edition of this catalog appear in red ink. Sorry,
Century Series books are not available for purchase with Federal Quota
funds.

--	Recorded Books: These books are recorded on 15/16 ips, 4-track
cassette tapes and have the highest standards of any audio textbooks
designed for blind students.

--	Regular Print Books: These mostly consist of teacher's manuals and
other materials for parents and professionals working with people who are
visually impaired.

--	TEXT2000 Electronic Books: These titles are electronic books supplied
on both 3 1/2 inch and 5 1/4 inch floppy disks. They are designed to operate
on MS-DOS(R) compatible computers. TEXT2000 software allows students to
read textbooks in a number of ways, depending on their computer equipment.
These books can be accessed by synthetic speech, large type sized to the
screen, and refreshable braille.

--	Video Tapes (VHS): APH videotapes offer a wide range of information.
Some tapes are instructional programs, while others are promotional items
that introduce APH products and services.

You will be able to identify the medium of any particular book by noting the
prefix of the APH catalog number. Here are the catalog number prefixes for
each type of medium:

-- Braille Books: 5, 6, Q, T, or X (Note: The "X" prefix indicates braille
music)
-- Large Type Books: 4, L, or J
-- Braille/Print/Recorded Books: 3
-- Century Series Books: 2
-- Recorded Books: C or R
-- Regular Print Books: 7 or 8
-- TEXT2000 Books: 9
-- Video Tapes: 1

Materials for Reading Instruction

The recent changes in the methods of teaching reading and the materials
designed to teach reading have blurred the lines between books previously
classified as "Basal Readers," "Reading Skills," and "Recreational Reading."
In this catalog, we have listed reading materials in the categories
"Reading," "Literature," and "Recreational Reading." Please check all three
sections for reading instruction materials.

Early Start Large Type Titles

Titles selected for our 1996 Early Start Large Type program are indicated
with the word "NEW!" APH has obtained the permissions to reproduce these
titles and has the master copies on hand for immediate enlargement.

A Note About Academic Tests

All braille editions of tests listed in this catalog either have a manual
available which includes the special directions required for administering
the braille edition or are packaged with such information. If a manual is not
listed for a large type edition of a test, that test is merely an enlargement
of the regular print test and has not been adapted for people who are
visually impaired. For these nonadapted large type tests, all auxiliary
materials must be obtained from the test publishers.

APH-DOTS Braille Production Service

The APH Disk Output Transcribing System (APH-DOTS) is a braille
production system that expands the list of titles available to students and
helps transcribers make their books produced with computers more widely
accessible. Transcribers and agencies from across the U.S. submit computer
transcription disks to APH. These disks are used to emboss interpoint
braille hard copies which are available for purchase. APH-DOTS books are
produced with a quick turnaround.

Vacuum Form Braille Titles

The hand-transcribed paper masters for the vacuum form titles listed in
this catalog are on permanent, free loan to APH. These books are vacuum
formed onto plastic using the paper masters and are then bound, ready for
student use.

Grade 2 Braille

All of the books in this listing are embossed in English Braille Grade 2,
unless otherwise indicated.

Types of Braille Pages

--	Interpoint braille is embossed on both sides of the page, with no extra
space between lines.
--	Interline braille is a method in which each braille line is preceded by
a blank line. Braille is embossed on both sides of the page.
--	Line for line braille is a method in which the layout of the braille
lines on the page corresponds to the layout of the lines on the original print
pages.

CARL ET AL: Database of Accessible Materials

Locating special materials needed by students who are visually impaired
has long been a challenge for educators and parents. Thousands of
volunteers working for nonprofit agencies, commercial companies, and
government entities across North America strive to make these materials
available in large type, braille, recorded, computer disk, and tactile graphic
form. The vast diversity of titles needed by students and the large number
of sources for these materials make it difficult to locate a particular title.

In the 1950s, it became apparent that a centralized list of textbooks
produced in special media would facilitate the location and provision of
these materials as well as eliminate duplication of titles. This listing
became a reality in 1958 at the American Printing House for the Blind when
the Central Catalog was established under the direction of Marjorie Hooper.
Carl Lappin became the director of the Central Catalog in 1963. His
dedication over the next twenty-three years helped make "The Catalog" a
widely respected and essential resource for the field of vision.

The Central Catalog is Computerized

The Central Catalog's beginning was modest. It consisted of a large card
file containing all titles produced by APH as well as titles submitted by
volunteer agencies and commercial companies. In 1987, this card file was
put on an electronic database called APH-CARL. This database eventually
expanded to hold over 34,000 titles.

To carry on the tradition of service to the field, APH has now redesigned
APH-CARL and created a new database called CARL ET AL. At this time,
CARL ET AL includes listings from APH, from over 200 volunteer and
commercial agencies, and from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&
D). Agencies list completed works and works which are in the process of
being produced. Approximately 120,000 titles are now listed, with more
being added every day! Listings now include books for adults as well as
students.

New CARL ET AL Features

CARL ET AL offers many new features, including enhanced searching
capabilities and faster searching response times. An E-mail feature, which
allows users to communicate directly with each other and with APH
personnel, has been added. APH books and other materials can now be
ordered on-line. For more information, contact the APH Department of
Educational and Advisory Services.

Instructional Aids, Tools, and Supplies

APH offers a wide variety of special aids, tools, and supplies that are
useful to blind people at home, at work, or at school. Examples include

vision aids, early childhood products, and much more. For free information,

wish to receive a free copy.

both those produced by APH and those produced by other vendors (available
in large type, on cassette tape, and on floppy disk). Please contact the APH
Department of Educational and Advisory Services to receive one or both of
these newsletters.

Advertising Material

APH offers a variety of free advertising material such as brochures and
catalogs. Most of these materials are available in print and in an accessible
medium such as braille, cassette, or floppy disk. Please contact the APH
Department of Educational and Advisory Services with your area of interest.

InSights Annual Juried Art Competition and Exhibition

Each year APH sponsors a juried art competition and exhibition designed
exclusively to showcase the talents of blind and visually impaired artists
of all ages. We receive hundreds of entries from across the U.S. and around
the world. From these submissions, works are chosen to be exhibited at
APH's Annual Meeting and other sites. Award winners in 10 categories are
also selected.

Submissions to InSights encompass a wide range of two- and three-
dimensional media, including sculpture, pottery, weavings, computer art,
prints, and paintings. Entries are judged by a professional or professionals
from the field of the arts. Artwork is judged on originality of concept,
expressive use of media, and artistic excellence.

Works that the artist offers for sale are often purchased by visitors to the
exhibit. As funds become available, APH purchases artwork from InSights
for its own permanent collection.

Please contact the APH Special Projects Coordinator in the Public Relations
office for more information on InSights.
