FOX AND HOUNDS is played by one player at a time.
Your goal is to catch the fox in less than ten hours!
The position of the fox is picked at random,
while you start in the Hunting Lodge at about the center of the map.
This game develops your map skills and relationships to objects on a map
by teaching you to use compass directions and distances to determine which
direction to move.

THERE ARE INTERRUPTIONS, AND A SHORT GAME TIME LIMIT IN THE DEMO.
THERE ARE MORE SOUNDS AND LONGER SOUNDS IN THE FULL PROGRAM.
AT THE END OF THIS FILE IS ORDERING INFORMATION.

INTRODUCTION:
This FOX AND HOUNDS game was written for the blind community.
It was written with speech in mind to enable blind people to know exactly what
is going on in the game at all times. This game also has multi media sounds.
If you have a sound card in your computer, you will now be able to enjoy the
game even more. If you do not have a sound card, the game is designed to play
the sounds through the P C speaker. But the sounds sound best through the
sound card. So give this game a try and see how you like it!

GETTING STARTED:
To start the game type FOX from with in the directory where the game is
located. For example: If the FOX AND HOUNDS game was installed on the C drive
in a directory call FOX97 type FOX at the C:>FOX97 prompt. The game will begin
with the title screen.
The first thing the computer will display is what mode the sound driver is in.
Then the computer will ask if you would like to change the sound driver setting.
Use the up and down arrow keys to change the settings. Then hit the enter key to
confirm your choice.

If you have a SOUND BLASTER card or compatible try the sound card setting.
If not try the PC setting and if you do not want any sound choose no sound.
Many of today's computers come with a sound card that plays the sound in this
game the way they were designed to be heard. If you don't have a sound card,
you can still hear the sounds through the small speaker built into every
computer by choosing the PC setting.
The no sound setting will play the game faster, because you don't have to
wait for the sound to play to move to the next block.

NOTE: A musical peace will begin to play after leaving the sound choice, you
may hit the escape key at any time during the playing of the song and the music
will stop.
One thing you need to know about the way the game plays the sounds is that
while a sound is being played, you can't hit any key except the escape key or the
game won't recognize the key being hit and will charge you extra minutes
on the same block.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Each block equals one quarter mile and you start at the center of the map.
use The arrow keys to move around the map.
Hit f 1 for a full screen of information.

When you hit f 1 you get the following list of commands:
use up arrow for north, down arrow for south,
left arrow for west and right arrow for east.
So when chasing the fox and the game says the fox is north west of you, you must
move either north or west, with the up or left arrow.
use the home key to look at the bordering blocks surrounding your position.
Use the end key to look from where you are to the edge of the map.
Use the delete key to get the x, y, coordinates of your block.
Hit the insert key to be inserted at the hunting lodge.
hit the f 2 key to change sound mode.
the f 5 key to the f 8 key will change the amount of information displayed.
F 5 toggles the x, y, coordinate labels.
x number tells you how far east or west you are, with west starting at 0.
y number tells you how far north or south you are, with south starting at 0.
f 6 toggles the Direction labels.
f 7 toggles the Distance to the fox label.
f 8 toggles The clock label.
Note, the f key settings will be saved at the end of the game so your
favorite settings will be preserved.
Hit escape to exit the FOX AND HOUNDS game.

SOUNDS OF OBJECTS;
Each object or block on the map is described by words and a sound.
If you land on two successive blocks that are identical, the sound will
only play for the first block. So when crossing a field you will hear only
one field sound. The exceptions are the streams and roads.

KEY TO THE OBJECTS:
Below are the objects on the map
with the time in minutes it takes to cross each one.

TIME IN GAME:
The game is over when you catch the fox by landing on the same block as the fox,
or the clock goes over 600 minutes (10 hours) and the fox escapes.
Each of the objects on the map take time to cross.
You can move faster by staying on the roads
which take one minute to cross one quarter mile.
Try to avoid the swamps, hills, pubs, chapels, manors
and the chicken coop which take 30 to 50 minutes when landed on.
If you want to stay still, hit the enter key. You will still be charged
with the time which the block is set.
For example if you are one block north west of the fox and
it is moving south east, you can wait for the fox to land on your block.

FOX HUNT - THE HORSE IN SPORT
Although centuries-old formality and tradition surround the sport,
fox hunting is hardly a thing of the past. More than 150 American
and Canadian hunts provide members and guests the opportunity
to chase the hounds and fox, with perhaps a breathtaking gallop
across country and over fences highlighting an autumn or winter
morning.

Much tradition and protocol surrounds fox hunting. The staff
consists of the Master of Foxhounds and the Huntsman, assisted
by Whippers-In who control the hounds. The field is led by a
Field Master followed by experienced fox hunters, with guests
and young riders at the rear. Any breed or type of horse or pony
may be used. The only requirements are good manners, stamina,
and the ability to jump fences, stone walls, and other natural
obstacles.

Hunting is not just one long gallop. There is a good deal of
waiting while hounds explore a covert, a likely place where a
fox may be hiding. If they are successful
in finding one, the chase may last for many miles. Drag
hunts follow not a live quarry but a scent previously dragged
across the countryside.

Only the staff and selected members of the hunt are entitled to
wear scarlet coats and mahogany topped boots. All others wear
black coats and boots. The staff wear caps, while others wear
top hats or derbies.
Only the Master of Huntsman carries a horn, to which the
hounds have been trained to respond.

We at Personal Computer Systems are always looking for new ideas for programs,
and if you make a suggestion we will give it some consideration.
If we make a program which you suggested you will receive the first copy of the
program free.

The market base for programs to supply the visually impaired and blind
community is small. If programmers are going to write fun and educational
programs then your support is very important.
Giving or receiving unpaid for programs and using them only makes it very hard
for people to produce products for this small base of people. For example, a
very good leisure game has been on the market for several years, and in all
that time only 250 to 300 games have been sold. The game is very good and
either there are many unpaid for games out there, or not many people like it.
Programmers are not looking for any hand outs. Just pay them for what is do
them. Thank you for your time and support and if you would like to give me
some feedback on this or any other
topic feil free to contact me.
