Start Up Options

The following are start up options for PC Talking Typing Tutor (TTT). The
start up options allow you to configure TTT to the speech synthesizer and
keyboard you are using. The start up parameters are optional and if no
options are selected TTT will start in screen review mode. The screen
review mode depends on a screen review program to read the screen to the
user.

  Remembering Start Up Options

If you forget start up options you can see them by typing:

Moving Through the Menus

PC Talking Typing Tutor is a menu driven program. There are two ways to
select items from a menu. The first method is typing the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys to move to the menu option you want and then type the ENTER key to
select the menu option. The second method allows direct selection of a
menu option. Before each menu option a letter is pronounced. Typing the
letter will move you directly to the menu option. Type the ENTER key to
select the menu option. The menu options are lettered consecutively from A
up to H. The exit option is always the last item on a menu and can be
directly selected with the letter X. The ESCape key will immediately exit
you from a menu or a lesson.

SPACE BAR Repeat the current menu option.

UP ARROW Move to previous menu option.

DOWN ARROW Move to next menu option.

ENTER Select current menu option.

F2 Repeat menu title.

ESCape Exit current menu.

Getting Help

You can use the F1 key and the SPACE bar to get help in Talking Typing
Tutor. The F1 key calls up a help screen to describe the options available
to you in the part of the program you are using. You can reread the help
screen information using the arrow keys. A summary of the arrow key
functions in the help screen are listed after this paragraph. To exit the
help screen you can either type the ESCape key or the F1 key again. After
exiting the help screen, you will return to the part of the program you
were in. The SPACE bar provides a way to repeat the last message if you
didn't understand the speech. The SPACE bar can provide additional
information if you continue to press it. In menus the SPACE bar will give
you information about selecting menu options. In lessons additional
presses of the SPACE bar will spell words by letter and phonetic letter.

  Help Screen Reading Functions

SPACE bar Read current line.

UP Arrow Read previous line.

DOWN Arrow Read next line.

LEFT Arrow Read previous character.

RIGHT Arrow Read next character.

CONTROL-LEFT Arrow Read previous word.

CONTROL-RIGHT Arrow Read next word.

ESCape Exit help screen.
Starting Lessons

To start lessons follow the menus to the lesson you want and select the
lesson option. The lessons should be self explanatory once you select
them. The beginning of each lesson contains redundant information so once
you try a couple of lessons you can anticipate the responses before the
entire message is spoken. If you already know the response for a given
prompt you can type it immediately, without having to wait for the speech
to finish speaking.
