                      Publisher's Note

_Lud-in-the-Mist_ was first published in 1926. I know very
little about the author, except that she was an Englishwoman
and was also the author of _The Counterplot_ and
_Madeleine_, but not, so far as I know, of any other fantasy
stories besides _Lud-in-the-Mist_. I have so far been
unsuccessful in finding her other books in any library or
publisher's catalog.

This edition follows the Ballantine edition of 1970, edited
by Lin Carter. A few obvious typos in that edition have
been corrected (e.g., "gone" for "gon," and the like). In a
few places, commas have been added for clarity.

As the ASCII format does not allow the use of italics, I
have had to use different delimiter characters for words
which, in the original text, were in italics.

* * for emphasis in speech, "What *are* you doing, Nat?"

_ _ for book titles, _Traces of Fairy in the Inhabitants,
Customs, Art, Vegetation and Language of Dorimare_, and " "
for song titles, "Columbine."

Foreign words, italicized in the original edition, are not
delimited in this.

This edition has been both spell-checked and proofread,
however, mistakes may have crept in anyhow. If you notice
any, please let me know.

Attention bookstore managers: _Lud-in-the-Mist_ is not yet
(8/93) available in an edition with a fine cover suitable
for bookstore sale. However, it may be by the time you read
this. Please write to inquire whether it is ready yet.
