What it is:

The texts stored in this directory tree have been scanned into ASCII
form, edited by hand and converted into TeX format---from documents FREE
OF COPYRIGHT. This includes old (pre-1950) Oxford Classical Texts (when
I can get them) and other more dubious sources (when I can't). I am
creating this library because I find the notion of copyrighting someone
else's work offensive, especially when the author is dead and can't
defend himself.

Contributing:

Please, PLEASE contribute to this library. Find a Latin text that is
free of copyright, scan (or type, I suppose) it in, and send it to me
(perseant@u.washington.edu) by e-mail. The more people contribute, the
larger a library this can be.

TeX:

TeX is a good (and free!) typesetter; but if you don't have the program,
having the files in that format will not help you. Therefore, in the
Utils directory is a program "tex2asc", a rudimentary TeX-to-ASCII
converter. It was written solely for the purpose of converting these
particular texts into ASCII form, so it probably won't work if you try
to use it on any more complicated TeX document.

However, you will have to compile it:

   machine% cc tex2asc.c -o tex2asc

before you can use it:

   machine% tex2asc < auc1.tex > auc1.ascii
   machine% tex2asc -w 50 < aeneid1.tex > aeneid1.ascii

If you do plan to use TeX to process the texts, make sure that you have
the file "ks_macros.tex", also stored in the Utils directory. This file
contains macros needed by almost all of the texts. Also, if the text
that you are processing has any Greek characters in it, be sure to get
the Greek font files: "grbld10.300pk", "grbld10.tfm", "grreg10.300pk",
"grreg10.360pk", "grreg10.432pk", and "grreg10.tfm".
