Item #0 List Of Mailing Lists - General Information
There are a few searchable web-based tools you can use to locate email
discussion lists:
     _________________________________________________________________
A. Liszt: A Searchable Directory of Email Discussion Groups
	URL http://www.liszt.com/

Liszt is the largest searchable directory of email lists,
containing listings for (at last count) 53,988 listserv, listproc,
majordomo and independently managed lists from 1803 sites.

a speech-friendlier reformat of the liszt search form can be found at:
	http://www.hicom.net/~oedipus/blist.html#liszt
     _________________________________________________________________
B. Vivian Neou's List of Lists: a directory of special interest group
   emailing lists.
	URL http://catalog.com/vivian/interest-group-search.html

An ASCII version of List of Lists is available via ftp from
	   ftp://sri.com/netinfo/interest-groups.txt
Be forewarned, the ASCII directory is extremely long. The ASCII version
can also be retrieved via email, by sending an emessage to:
	mail-server@sri.com
in the body of the message, type:
     send interest-groups

C. the Global List of Public LISTSERVs can also be queried via the web
	URL http://www.lsoft.com/lists/LIST_Q.html
(note that 'LIST_Q' is in uppercase)
there is a speech-friendly version of this form located at:
	http://www.hicom.net/~oedipus/blist.html#global

D. To get a complete list of all mailing lists on listserv,
send an e-mail to the address
listserv@listserv.net
In the message of the body write
lists global
Then you get a nearly 1 meg file back with current available list information.
Since the list of all electronic mailing lists is so large, don't be
surprised if the list sends back a message telling you to specify a key
word. In that case, send another message to the same email address but
in the body of the message type,
list global blind
and it will return a list of mailing lists related to the blind.
Another source is to log on to Tom Baccanti's home page called The Outpost.
Url: http://www.deltanet.com/users/tdb
If you want to log in directly to the mail list area of Tom's home
page, the url is http://users.deltanet.com/~tdb/lists.htm and you can
download the complete list or search online.

Item #1 the Blind Exchange Mailing List
Blind-X is an electronic mailing list which represents two ideas. First,
brand x, meaning generic in nature, and second, blind exchange as in the
exchange of information related to the blind. It is a mailing list for fun,
the exchange of blind related information, a place where new users of the
internet are free to ask questions, and where blind people and their friends
are free to express their opinions and ideas on blind related topics. This
means blind-x isn't just for the blind. Sighted people are always welcome.
You can subscribe in two ways. First, if you are familiar with list
subscription, send email to listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu and leave the subject
blank. In the body of your email message, simply type the following on a
single line.
subscribe blind-x Phil Scovell
Of course you must substitute your name for mine in the above
example. The other way to subscribe is to simply email me personally and make
your request known.
Before anyone is subscribed to the list, they receive information via
email on the general purpose of the list as well as the list rules and policy.
No one is subscribed without first reading this information. Once this
material has been read, simply email me with your request and you will be
subscribed. If you need help, let me know.

Item #2 Blind News
blindnews@vm1.nodak.edu: A list that deals with issues of people
who are visually impaired. To subscribe, send an email message
to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu and include in the body of the message:
subscribe blindnws first name last name

Item #3 Blind-l Blind List
The official topic is computer use of and for the blind but
we seem to discuss anything to do with technology and the blind.
A few people and I was one of them, drew the line at a prolonged
discussion about whether a blind person who also has an anxiety disorder
should be entitled to write college exams at home and whether a train of
40 blind people walking through a college quadrangle hand on the
shoulder of the person in front was too much like a baby elephant walk
or not.
Feel free and consider yourself invited to subscribe.
And if your mail suddenly dies from the list, just rre-subscribe as that
usually means netcom has thrown a wrang and rejected your mail from the
list.
To join, send email as follows to:
listserv@uafsysb.uark.edu
subject: anything
message body says:

subscribe blind-l firstname lastname
set blind-l noack nofiles mail repro

This will get you a copy of anything you sent to the list sent to you as
confirmation it went out.
The whole list is set nofiles so nofiles is just in case something
goofs.
Noack skips the acknowledgement message confirming listserv processed
mail you sent to the list.
mail says you want mail from the list as opposed to digest or nomail.

Item #4 Deaf Blindness
deafblnd@ukcc.uky.edu: Dual sensory impairment (deaf-blindness)
is the topic of this forum. The mission of DEAFBLND is to share
information, inquiries, ideas, and opinions on matters pertaining
to dual sensory impairment. To subscribe, send an email message
to listserv@ukcc.uky.edu and include in the body of the message:
subscribe deafblnd first name last name

Item #5 Blindness And Family Life
The BlindFam mailing list for discussions of all aspects of family
life as they are affected by the blindness of one or more family
members welcomes discussions of any topic directly related to how
blindness has, is or will be affecting your family life. All family
members are invited to join including spouses, parents, and children
of a blind individual as well as any blind person.

Most any situation in your everyday life in which blindness
plays a significant roll could be a topic for discussion. Especially

Item #16 ADA-ACCESS - ADA Disability Access Issues Discussion
ADA-ACCESS will discuss, examine, and provide counsel on:
 - physical access for people with disabilities;
 - related architectural norms and practices; and
 - modification of policies, practices, or procedures
for access to programs, services, transportation, and facilities.
This list will *not* attempt to cover juridicial, employment process, or
compensation issues. These are better covered in ADA-LAW on
LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU.
The audience is those who develop, specify, implement, and use solutions for
reasonable access and accommodation. Subscribers are expected to include:
 - public sector officials such as building inspectors and town planners;
 - architects and general contractors;
 - non-profit agencies supporting people with disabilities such as
independent living centers;
 - members and staff of relevant public commissions or regulatory/legislative
bodies; consultants in matters involving access; and
 - individuals with disabilities.
References to ADA - the Americans with Disabilities Act - are not meant to
limit discussion only to matters arising from that legislation. We seek
knowledge and greater awareness of comparable laws, regulations, and
activities at lower levels (e.g., states and local jurisdictions) as well as
in other countries.
As a 'value added' service, subscribers' references to online resources (web
sites and ftp files) will be collected and published as web page(s), the
extent of indexing and frequency yet to be determined.

Item #17 Vendors of Assistive Technology (VAT)
For quite some time now, I've been looking for a mailing list that
caters to vendors and consumers of assistive technology.
As a blind consumer, I would like to know who the various vendors are
and which services and programs can benefit me.
Often the latter are nicely tucked away and you really wonder whether
they are helping their intended audience. I get fustrated when I find out
that a government agency has been providing a service for a while and
I haven't been told about it.
I'm sure that there are quite a few of you out there that have experienced
the same thing.

So, I have set up an unmoderated mailing list called
VAT (Vendors of Assistive Technology).
This list is open to any vendor of assistive technology (e.g., products and
services for the blind, visually impaired, deaf, learning disabled, etc.) who
would like to make themselves known to the public at large.
Feel free to advertise your products and services.
Similarly, if you're a consumer, you can post to the list in order to find
the vendor(s) in your area who sells/repairs product X or perhaps you
would like to find out whether product/service exists.
Or perhaps you would like to find out
about vendors from other customers such as how adequate is after sales
support.

I know that there are products out there like the
ABLEDATA project (funded by the U.S. Department of Education
and run by Macro International Inc.) produces the ABLEDATA database
which lists many vendors and products for the disabled.
I should note that the VAT mailing list
will not attempt to compete with such a fine product or other similar
products and services. But rather, the mailing list is aimed at letting people
know that such products and services are available. My aim is to let
people know of what's out there, and to tell them how to get it.

I'm also in the process of setting up a repository which houses vendor material.
If any of you vendors out there would like to have your
catalogue, price list, brochures, newsletter, demo programs, etc. accessed by
the listserver, then send them on a disc (IBM/PC 5.25" or 3.5") to the postal
address given below. Please, please, do not send them to me via e-mail.

To subscribe to the VAT mailing list, send a message to:

	listserv@kramden.tlug.org

and in the body of the message say:

        subscribe VAT firstname lastname

For example, the following command will add John Doe to the VAT mailing list.

        subscribe VAT John Doe

To get a current listing of available files, send the command "index"
in the body of a message to "listserv@kramden.tlug.org".

Please circulate this announcement.

Any blind job seekers, blind employers, or potential employers of blind
job seekers are invited to join the blindjob mailing list. Its purpose is
to discuss any and all aspects of employment as they relate to blind
people. Blind job seekers are encouraged to place "cover letters" in the
list for potential job-seekers to read. Potential employers are
encouraged to post job openings and vacancies. And there is also a good
deal of discussion concerning employment-related issues. For example,
there is currently a discussion going on about employment for blind
people in radio. All this and more is what the blindjob list is all about.

To subscribe to the blindjob mailing list, send an e-mail message to
listserv@sjuvm.stjohns.edu. Leave the subject line blank, and include the

Item #40 Braille Mailing List - Braille-l
From: Jonathan Mosen jmosen@RNZFB.ORG.NZ
A new mailing list has been launched by the Royal New Zealand Foundation
for the Blind's Government Relations Department. It's purpose is to
discuss political strategies to promote the use of Braille. It is hoped
that this list will cover such issues as specific legislation designed to
promote and protect Braille, encouraging the inclusion of Braille in
crucial acts (such as those relating to education and copyright), and
encouraging individual consumers to settle for nothing less than the best
form of literacy for blind people.

If you have an interest in Braille, whether it be from the perspective of a
user, an educator or an advocate, we hope you'll join this list.

To subscribe to braille-l, send a message to "listman@rnzfb.org.nz" with
the line "subscribe braille-l" in the body of the message.

We would also be grateful if you could forward this message to any relevant
mailing list, or to any individual who you think may wish to subscribe.

Item #42 Blind Hams Mailing List
There is now a mailing list specifically designed for blind amateur radio
operators. To subscribe, send an email message to:
listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu
No subject line is necessary. In the body of the message, place this
In the body of your email message, type the following.
subscribe blind-hams
That's all there is to it. Within a few minutes of sending that email,
you should receive a confirmation message, letting you know that your
command was successful, along with one which will give you some general
information about the list.
I envision the list as serving most every purpose relating to the hobby
that could possibly be of interest to any of it's members--from getting
started to comparing notes on "blind-friendly" equipment (or how to make
equipment which might not appear to fall into that category do so),
from setting up schedules to sharing hobby-related experiences, and
discussing the social ramifications amateur radio has had on our lives
(the opportunity to meet new people, etc.), and most everything in
between. If it's even remotely related to amateur radio in general and
the blind community's participation in it in particular, it will be fair
game for discussion, within the normal bounds of courtesy, good taste,
and the like. A channel has also been registered with a small new IRC
network, giving list members an opportunity to meet and chat in real time
on-line, as well as a means by which we can share public-domain and
shareware files related to the hobby, when the need/desire arises.
Specific information on this will be sent to new list members upon
subscription.
I look forward to seeing everyone who might be interested on the list.
Questions about anything i may have forgotten to cover here may be sent
to riddler@ds9.foxfire.net and will be replied to directly.
Thanks.

Item #45 Netex
From: TNT tnt@cyberia.com
NETEX on LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM The Internet Experience Digest

NETEX is a heavily moderated list that tries to go deeper into
the Internet than a simple listing of cool sites can provide.
There's a lot going on around here. Finding what's useful and
worthless to you is a big job in itself. Meanwhile, there are
the issues that surround the Net. These issues affect --
perhaps even threaten -- the way you use the Net, and even the
   Net itself.

Nobody can hope to learn all there is to know. It seems to me
that a good start is to find out how others use the Net.
Other people can point out things you've missed, things you
want to avoid, and things you might want to try for yourself.
Even if the article isn't specifically relevant to your
interests, it can help you gain a fuller appreciation of
   variety of the Net.

The format of NETEX is somewhere between a discussion list and
an electronic magazine, which means I hope to allow writers
great freedom to post, while at the same time keeping a
   comfortable format for readers.

Each issue of NETEX will be archived and available to
subscribers and non-subscribers. You may obtain a list of
files in the archives by sending the command

      INDEX NETEX

in the BODY of e-mail to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM

synthesizer and some other proprietary software. It has ondergone many
changes since it's first release. It was originally released with IBM
Screen reader for Dos and a number of very speech hostile programs. The
reason for this was that the folks at TFI engineering took an existing
palm top computer and adapted it for use by blind folks. The Myna is a
completely Dos compatible machine. In its current configuration, it will
be released with a built in organizer, and telecommunications program.
These pieces of software will talk automatically and you won't need a
screen reader. However, if you want to run your favorite dos programs,
you'll have to have a screen reader.

users of access technology can tap the information on the web.
Topics for discussion may include, but are not limited to the
following:

New web sites of interest to users of access technology either
because they make information available that was previously only
available in print or because they are of a general interest to
the access technology field.

Web sites that either are or are not particularly friendly to
users of access technology such as screen readers.

Techniques for making a particular web browser work better with
different access technology.

Coordination of advocacy efforts to make web sites more
accessible.

Item #53 The Pretty Good Privacy Mailing List
From: Fred Ringel
Email: fredr@rivertown.net
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a wonderful encryption program written
by Philip Zimmerman and utilized by many to encrypt personal or
sensitive communications and files kept on their computers or sent
via e-mail. Encryption enhances their privacy and that of the
   recipients of such communications.

The pgp-users (Pretty Good Privacy) users list (and its accompanying
digest) at Rivertown.Net have been established for two reasons: one,
for those you utilizing PGP to discuss technical issues surrounding
the use of the program (i.e., how do I do this or that, and more
importantly, why would I want to do it) and thus, the first rationale
of the list is technical (it is presumed that you have at least tried
to find the answer in the exhaustive PGP manual which accompanies the
program before looking for an answer via the list).

Secondly, the list is established as a forum for privacy related
issues, including the use of anonymous re-mailers, and privacy
   related issues.

While there is intended to be a technical aspect to the pgp-users
list, the list is not intended to be a *highly* technical forum for
cryptology. I leave that to the cypherpunks list where the expertise
of the list members is unparalleled. This list is for those who are,
technically, a few notches below the cypherpunks level.

To subscribe to the list, send e-mail to pgp-users-request@rivertown.net
with the word "subscribe" in the subject **NOT THE BODY** of the
e-mail. To subscribe to the digest, sent your request to
pgp-users-d-request@rivertown.net and your subscription will be
likewise processed. Depending on list volume, digests will go out
from once a day to several times a day.

To unsubscribe to the list, simply send an e-mail to
   pgp-users-request@rivertown.net or pgp-users-d-request@rivertown.net
with the word "unsubscribe" in the **SUBJECT** of the e-mail, not the
   body.

To post to the list (or the digest), send your e-mail to
pgp-users@rivertown.net and your e-mail will be distributed to all
the members of the list. By default, the "reply-to" address is the
   list address.

Mailing List. I hope that you will find it enjoyable and useful.

The Speech Toys Mailing List is an unmoderated list for people
interested in speech technology. The emphasis is on readily
available programs, dictionaries and databases as well as com-
mercial speech efforts.

The rules? Well, there are no rules except that posts should be
pertinent to speech technology and that proper "netiquette" be
observed. No flames. No strident commercialism (informative
product announcements are welcome, however).

Post by sending mail to speechtoys-list@speechtoys.com. You can
unsubscribe at any time by going to the Speech Toys Mailing List
page at http://www.speechtoys.com/spchtoys/maillst.html and fol-
lowing the unsubscribe procedure (which gives instant gratifica-
tion).

You can deal with a human (me!) by sending e-mail. State clearly
what it is you need, and send the request to:

    speechtoys-subscribe@speechtoys.com
    speechtoys-unsubscribe@speechtoys.com
    speechtoys-help@speechtoys.com

Please be patient. I will respond as soon as I can, hopefully
meeting your request.

Finally, if you use your mailer's "reply" function to respond to
a message, you will respond directly to the sender of the post.
If you would like to respond to the list members at large, place
"speechtoys-list@speechtoys.com" in either the "To:" line or in
the "Cc:" line.
                          Enjoy!

The Browser and Screen Reader Listserve.
BASR-L is a professional mailing list for discussing blind
people's web access issues. The main focus of this mailing list
is to improve the access blind people have to the World Wide Web.
(It is not a list for support on existing products and features,
since other lists already provide that service.)
We invite the participation of blind people, web professionals,
adaptive technology industry professionals, and other interested
individuals on BASR-L:
If you are a blind consumer interested in working with browser companies
to develop an understanding of how blind people could use browsrs most
effectively, you are invited to join BASR-L. Certainly, no such effort
can hope to succeed without your active participation.
If you are a professional associated with the development of web
and browser technology, and would like to help blind people gain
the best access possible to the web, you are invited to join
BASR-L. You will learn how blind people use computers to access
information they usually can't get any other way. Our effort
will not succeed without the active participation of
professionals from the industry that brings web browsers to
market.
If you are an access technology developer or professional who is
interested in developing approaches for World Wide Web access, you are
invited to join BASR-L. This listserve would be an excellent forum for
developing mutual strategies with browser developers. Your experience in
providing blind people access to information technology will be invaluable
to this group's efforts.
If you are a researcher in these or associated fields, and you
are interested in testing the limits of non-visual web browsing,
you are invited to join BASR-L. You will learn about the
practical opportunities available in non-visual information
technology today. And, we need your vision of a better tomorrow
to insure the best browsing products possible.
Specially adapted computer interfaces based on synthetically
generated speech (and on refreshable braille displays) have
transformed the lives of many blind people over the past twenty
years. BASR-L has been formed to provide a professional forum for
developing the necessary ideas and contacts to insure that these
gains in technology continue for blind people's quality of life and
success in employment in the information age.

Item #78 Words From Washington
The Governmental Relations Group of the American Foundation for
the Blind is pleased to announce a new electronic legislative
briefing service, "Words from Washington" (WFW). WFW is available
free of charge via Internet e-mail or fax. As part of this new
service, you will periodically receive "Words from Washington,"
while Congress is in session. WFW is a brief report on what's
happening in Washington with frequent analysis of how
developments in Washington affect individuals who are blind or
visually impaired and the professionals who serve them. WFW is
generally no more than two or three pages in length and is
presented in a highly readable newspaper-like style format.

WFW is not a complete Congressional Record or Federal Register
tracking service, and is not intended as a vehicle to provide
in-depth articles regarding legislative or regulatory matters
affecting the blindness community.

In addition, from time to time you may also receive alerts and
updates on current federal legislation and other governmental
developments of interest to individuals who are blind and the
organizations who serve them. Alerts will briefly outline the
problem, tell you what advocates are doing about it and suggest
ways in which you can be involved. Some of the issue areas we
will cover are appropriations and budget, civil rights,
education, employment and rehabilitation, health care, Social
Security, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. The
subject and timing will be based on current activities in
Congress or Executive Branch agencies.

You are encouraged to reprint or redistribute WFW and alerts, but
we would appreciate your crediting AFB as the source of any
information used. Keep in mind that legislative activity is fast
paced, and information published today may be out of date tomorrow.

Our previous legislative information service, the AFB Information
Network, has been discontinued.

To receive "Words from Washington" free of charge, published
while Congress is in session, and delivered quickly to your
Internet e-mail box or fax machine, please complete the enclosed
subscription form. Internet e-mail versions of WFW and alerts are
presented in a 73 column, plain text format easily read by all
screen readers. If you have any questions about the content of
WFW or our alerts, please contact Barbara LeMoine of the AFB
Governmental Relations Group, 202-457-1497 or e-mail
afbgov@afb.org.

The mission of the American Foundation for the Blind is to enable
persons who are blind or visually impaired to achieve equality of
access and opportunity that will ensure freedom of choice in
their lives. AFB accomplishes this mission by taking a national
leadership role in the development and implementation of public
policy and legislation, informational and educational programs,
and quality services.

mailing list. It is called "Blind Law." It is a project of the
National Association of Blind Lawyers, a division of the National
Federation of the Blind.
The list serves at least two purposes. first, it is a place
where individuals and organizations can ask legal questions. The
list will be monitored by members of NABL and they hope to help
people with matters connected to the law and blindness, such as
ADA questions and the like. Secondly, the list is a vehicle for
members of the National Association of Blind Lawyers to stay in
contact with each other and other blind attorneys and individuals
working in or interested in the legal field.
The list is hosted by NFB NET, the official BBS of the
National Federation of the Blind. It is in Message Area 8. You

Item #99 Visually Impaired Computer Users Mailing List
VICUG-L serves as a conduit through which members of visually
impaired/blind computer users' groups nation- and world-wide can
exchange educational materials, keep one another apprised of their
activities, and discuss strategies for co-ordinated action.
Originally VICUG-L was merely the discussion/announcement list for
VICUG-NYC, the Visually Impaired Computer Users' Group of the New York
Metropolitan Area. However, the benefits of a nation-wide list which
connects, and even fosters the establishment and growth of local
VICUGs caused the listowners to broaden the list's mandate.
Since VICUG-L is a dialogue, rather than a discussion or a chat list,
potential subscribers are asked to review the following ground rules
carefully before subscribing.
    1. VICUG-L is an organizational and informational list, which is
intended to foster constructive dialogue and increase networking
amongst computer user groups. Flamers will be dropped from the
       list without warning.
    2. SUBJECT LINES: Subject: lines should be brief and precise. Because
VICUG-L is a multi-purpose list, it is essential that the Subject:
line accurately reflect the contents of the message's body, if the
list is to function effectively. Please exercise care in this
       regard when responding to messages.
    3. SUBJECT LINE PREFIXES: Messages specifically intended for the
members of a specific computer users' group should contain a
Subject: line prefix so as to provide listmembers with an
effective filtering mechanism. A list of the current prefixes will
be mailed to you upon confirmation of your subscription.
         a. The following Subject: lines should also be used to indicate
            the content of posts:
ACT: activism updates; calls for action
                   (i.e. emailing campaigns)
                EDU: educational materials
                PROP: proposals for co-ordinated action
TECH: emerging technology and its implications
    4. QUOTING: Please avoid overquoting previous posts--often, a brief
summation of a previous post or the thread to which you are
contributing is sufficient. Those who object to another
listmember's overquoting should send their complaints directly to
the poster, and Cc them to the listowner,
       VICUG-L-REQUEST@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
    5. NETIQUITTE: Complaints about and criticism of other listmembers
and/or the organizations to which they belong should be handled
       off-list via private email.
    6. MEETING MINUTES: Conference announcements and minutes of meetings
should be sent to the listowner for general distribution and NOT
to the list itself. Meeting minutes are subject to non-intrusive
editing, such as the pruning of long headers. The posting of brief
announcements which indicate the URL of a meeting's minutes
directly to the list is, however, perfectly acceptable.
To subscribe to VICUG-L, send an email message to:
     LISTSERV@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
In the body of the emessage, type:
     subscribe VICUG-L firstname lastname
An hypertext archive of past posts to VICUG-L can be found at the
following URL:

online using the mailto: fields in the hypertext version of this list
description, which is located at:

Individuals who are members of a visually impaired/blind computer users
group which is not listed in this document are asked to contact the
listowner via email using the following eddress:

Item #103 Development of Adaptive Software & Hardware for Blind/VI
BLIND-DEV is an unmoderated discussion list dedicated to the detailed
discussion of issues concerning the development of computer products
and adaptive equipment for blind and visually impaired computer users.
This includes both hardware and software development on any system.
The purpose of BLIND-DEV is to serve as a catalyst which will both spur
and speed the development of software which will enable the blind user to
use emerging technologies, platforms, operating systems, and applications
as they are developed, so that access is built-in, rather than
retrofitted.
Example topics of discussion include, but are not limited to:
    * design strategies
    * accessibility APIs, such as MSAA
    * Text-to-speech APIs, such as SSIL and SAPI
    * Off-screen models (OSMs)
    * Braille output APIs
    * Relevant operating system issues
BLIND-DEV, therefore, is a conduit through which software developers and
users--whatever their area of interest, level of expertise, operating
system and/or hardware platform of choice--are able to dialogue, brainstorm,
and educate one another. While BLIND-DEV is intended as a technologically
oriented list, list "lurkers" are also welcome to monitor this dialogue.
To subscribe to BLIND-DEV, type the following command:
        SUBSCRIBE BLIND-DEV firstname lastname
in the _BODY_ of a message (substituting, of course, your actual first
and last names) and send it to
        LISTSERV@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
It is possible to subscribe to BLIND-DEV in index form, whereby you
receive a table of contents listing the subject lines of the day's
traffic. BLIND-DEV is also available in digest form--that is, all of the
day's posts contained in a single message.
The list and its monthly archives are public. This means that one does
not have to be subscribed to the list either to post to it or to peruse
past posts. BLIND-DEV is also automatically hyperarchived. Past posts to
BLIND-DEV can be perused via the web at the following URL:
        http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/blind-dev.html
BLIND-DEV also maintains a web site, located at
        http://www.cs.tcd.ie/blind-dev
and an anonymous FTP repository, located at:
        ftp://ftp.cs.tcd.ie/blind-dev
through which developmental software may be distributed to blind/vi users.
If you have any problems with the list or would like more information
about BLIND-DEV, please contact:
        BLIND-DEV-request@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
thank you for your interest in BLIND-DEV,

and the absurd.

Item #107 Scanner Talk Mailing List
From: "Peter M. Scialli, Ph.D." INTERNET:shrink@erols.com
Hi All,
For those of you who haven't heard, I've started a mailing list called
Scantalk. It is designed as a forum for those interested in OCR by and for
the blind.
When you send your initial request, send it to "Majordomo@Bolis.Com". The
subject line doesn't matter. In the body of the message, put in
Subscribe Scantalk
and don't put in your Email address.
The server will respond with the confusing instructions and an
authorization code. Assuming the authorization code is XXXX, you need to
respond to Majordomo@Bolis.Com with the statement
Auth XXXX Scantalk
Again, don't include your Email address.
If you still can't get subscribed, send me an Email to Shrink@Erols.Com
and I will do it manually. Thanks.

Item #108 Blind Professional Journalists Mailing List
It's been long in the making, but we're up and running. The world's first
discussion list for blind journalists is now open to new participants.
This list is an informal gathering place for people who want to ask
questions and exchange ideas on how blind people succeed in journalism.
We welcome working journalists or those who expect to write for a living,
on deadline. We expect our group will include writers employed at
newspapers, magazines, TV, or public affiars departments.
We also welcome students wanting to pursue journalism careers or former
journalists who, after becoming blind, wish to acquire effective
alternative techniques for working in our highly-competitive arena. There
will probably be little of interest on this list for poets or novelists.
The Blind Professional Journalists Group formed in July, 1996, during
the National Federation of the Blind's annual Convention in Anaheim,
California. Among its founding members are students, reporters, editors
and the former dean of the journalism department at Arizona State
University.
We expect to spend the next several months finding blind journalists in
the US and beyond and getting them subscribed to our new Listserv,
NFB-BPJ. Among the topics we expect to discuss in the listserv are:
--Technology that lets you manipulate information quickly and on
deadline.
--Reportorial techniques specific to blindness, ranging from managing
the interview to managing visual aspects of the story.
--Nuts-and-bolts solutions concerning transporation and techniques for
working with reader/driver/assistants.
--Employment issues specific to blind professionals, from how to get
hired to how to fund adaptive equipment
--Ways of cracking informational barriers in order to keep you informed
so you can do your job exceptionally well.
The NFB-BPJ list may grow to include discussions far more diverse than
these, but we request that subject matter be confined to those things
directly relating to the techniques and issues directly affecting blind
journalists.
So how to join the list? Simply send an e-mail message to:
  listserv@lothlorien.nfbcal.org
Leave the subject field blank, and in the body of the message, type:
  subscribe nfb-bpj Your Name
No need to enclose your name in brackets, though. If all goes well, in
a matter of hours you'll recieve a welcome message and you're subscribed.
For questions or comments about the List, please feel free to contact
the co-moderators, Elizabeth Campbell and Bryan Bashin, whose addresses
are listed below.
Elizabeth Campbell, Ft. Worth, Texas (liz@dfw.net)
  Bryan Bashin, Sacramento, California (bashin@calweb.com)-------

Item #109 Cristians Home Educating Young Adults
Cristians Home Educating Young Adults (C-HEYA) is an open forum for
parents interested in discussing the issues surrounding educating their
children at home during what would be their junior high (middle school),
and senior high years.
The emphasis here is on issues of curriculum, methodology, college and
career preparation, general educational philosophy, development of
Christian character, resources, and mutual support --all in particular
relation to the secondary school ages. We will also include in our scope
issues of parenting adolescents, as the need may arise.

We will endeavor to adhere to this particular focus. Thus, messages
concerning such things as home-making, recipes, political causes,
theological views, and personal issues should not be posted to this
list, but to a more appropriate forum. Likewise, home schooling issues of
a more general nature, or those pertaining to younger children, would
better be directed to one of the more widely based home schooling
conferences.

This is a Christian conference. Nonetheless, it is open to any one who
wants to participate. We do expect that all will respect the generally
accepted values of Christian love, mutual respect, sanctity of life, home,
and the worship of God.

To subscribe send a message to: hub@xc.org and in the body type:

   subscribe c-heya

Item #110 the Visually Impaired Computer Users' Group List
The aim of VICUG-L is to foster the establishment and promote the growth
of local Visually Impaired and Blind Computer Users' Groups worldwide.
Most of VICUG-L's subscribers are members of blind/vi computer user groups
in their local communities. List members pool knowledge and resources to
help each other function at their best in this fast-changing electronic
age. We exchange educational materials, keep one another apprised of
local activities, and discuss strategies for co-ordinated action.

No group in your community? No problem. Like you, most list members are
pursuing technology-related activities that impact on the workplace,
research, education and the job market. List members explore on-line
information networks; hear about developments in the industry, examine new
adaptations and test new software; and exchange consultations and training
at all levels of expertise--everything from late-breaking news on the
latest technological advances to information about local resources which
repair and refurbish donated computer hardware.

Unlike most mailing lists, VICUG-L is a dialogue, rather than a discussion
or a chat list. This means that the list exists mainly as a means of
sharing and exchanging information, news, innovations, trends, and reports
on local service, educational programs, organizing efforts, and advocacy
activities. VICUG-L is a network--a means of locating resources, finding
answers, and developing strategies for learning and mastering adaptive
technology.

VICUG-L is predicated upon the belief that blind computer users master adaptive

technology quickly and thoroughly when they work collectively--learning from
each other, sharing ideas, evaluating products, and advocating for greater
access to software and information on the local, the national, and the
international level. VICUG-L, therefore, is designed to serve as a catalyst
which will help foster the development, and the maturation, of participatory
educational/support organizations, comprised of individual blind users,
committed to the principles of self-development, mutual aid, cooperative
learning and peer mentoring.

Everyone these days seems to be plugged in; everyone and everything is
online. And, yet, we, as blind computer users are routinely reduced to
roadkill on the information superhighway. The learning curve is steep,
yet to whom can we turn to obtain an objective opinion on emerging
technology, or for a new insight or strategy in overcoming what has always
seemed hopelessly inaccessible? To each other, through VICUG-L.

VICUG-L is the united voice of individual blind and visually impaired
computer users who have joined together to form local communities of
users. It is a means not only of increasing your personal knowledge of
computers and access technology, but the pool of knowledge available to
all blind/vi computer users. VICUG-L offers grass-roots alternative to a
community too long divided by geography and the limitations of traditional
media. Thanks to the internet, for the first time in history, we, as
blind individuals, have the capacity to share our skills and expertise
with one another; to keep each other apprised of our activities and
agendas; to share educational materials and organizational experiences.
It is a bridge between the global and the local--in a word, it is
VICUG-L.

If you have access to the World Wide Web, you can check out the list
before joining. An archive of past posts to VICUG-L can be found at the

The National Federation of the Blind in Computer Science is proud to
announce that we are establishing, with the help of Dave Andrews, a new

surrounding the access to computers by blind persons and to deal with
issues specific to our division.
There are three ways to participate:
1. Contact our Bulletin Board, NFBNET, by phone at 612-696-1975
or telnet to nfbnet.org. Once at the main menu, go to message area
    6.
2. Join with others on this list using e-mail. Simply send a
note to listserv@nfbnet.org with one line containing

subscription request was received. each message to the list will
then be sent to your address.
3. If you would rather receive this list in digest form, this
means that messages are combined and sent as a single message each
day, send a note to listserv@nfbnet.org with the single line:
    subscribe nfbcs-d
and a message of verification will be returned to you.
We look forward to sharing ideas and technical information with you on

Item #123 National Association Of Radio Reading Services
The National Association of Radio Reading Services (NARRS) is
inaugurating a global communications experiment. The NARRS
International
List Server (ILS) is a continuous, inexpensive meeting place for
anyone
anywhere in the world. The meeting place is setup primarily for
those
people or organizations currently in the accessible information
distribution business or wishing to be in this business, and who
are
operating in the wireless or wired modes of distribution. We are in
the
information age in the United States and most of the world. Our
blind and
print-impaired users are falling behind more rapidly each day in
their
quest to access current and vital information. The purpose is to
create an
environment for participants to give and receive whatever
information that
will be helpful to serve blind and print-impaired users.
We are trying this communication experiment for one year
to see
if this is a viable means of frequent communication world wide with
those
in a similar business. This experiment will be conducted in
English. The
way we do business and the topics we discuss on the list server
will more
than likely evolve to meet the participants needs. When you send a
message
to the ILS, it will automatically be sent to everyone on the list,
including yourself. Because of world-wide time differences, you
may not
receive a return comment to your question for many hours.
Here's how you get on the list:
1. Address e-mail message to: majordomo@main.nc.us
2. Leave the subject of the message blank.
3. In the body of the message put: subscribe narrs-ils
4. Majordomo will reply to confirm that you are on the list.
To find out who else is on the list:
Address the message to majordomo@main.nc.us and put in the body:
who
narrs-ils
To send a message to everyone on the list:
  Address the message to narrs-ils@main.nc.us
That's all there is to it. Any questions, contact me (Bob
Brummond)
westwood1@mindspring.com. Or write Bob Brummond, 75 Haywood St.,
suite
G-5, Asheville, N.C., U.S.A. 28805
Please relay the above message to anyone else anywhere in the
world
who you know as being in a similar business or who might be
interested.
     Thank you.
     Bob Brummond

Item #124 The "readum-n-speak" mailing list - Book Reviews
I started this, because there was an extensive thread on the "blindfam"
list, that consisted of blind individual communicating about books they
had read/heard, the people who read them, the people who wrote them, and
the like.
Someone there suggested that a list that dealt with just this subject be
started, and I took it upon my self to do so!
Here you have it.
we will talk about the things mentioned above, and any related issues.
Book/reader reviews are welcome!
If a topic gets out-of-hand (long argument, or talking about non list
issues), I will worn the list publicly, and if the condition persists,
or one person, or a group of people keep repeating the same type of
action, they *will* be unsubscribed from the list!
Contact Info:
-------------
To be removed from the list, send a message to "listserv@nfbcal.org",
In the body of your message write: "unsubscribe books" (with out the
quotes or course).
To subscribe send a message to the same place, and in the body write:
"subscribe books full name", replacing "full name", with your first
and last names.

nature!
This list is my personal project, and has nothing to do with MicroTalk!

subscribe, send email to the following address:
majordomo@dreamhaven.org
In the body of the message, place the following line:

Again, this is not another chat list to clutter your mailbox, but rather
one which will keep you up to date with the latest happenings involving
BlindNet--advisories on network status when we have problems,
announcements of new channels, schedules of upcoming events on existing
channels, etc. It will be the only list where many of these announcements
will be posted, so if you are a regular user of BlindNet or just want to
keep up to date with what we're up to, it would be to your advantage to
subscribe.

Item #145 blinkmart

Rules, Regs, and Edicts of BlinkMart List!
1) BlinkMart, Negia, and the Moderator, (especially the Moderator),
are not responsible for the price, condition of property, or the honesty
of the sellers that show up on this list.
2) If you feel someone's item isn't worth what the seller is asking,
then don't use this list to tell them so...do it in a private e-mail
message! Likewise, if you don't like a certain item, it's developers,
or it's origin, don't express it openly--just don't buy that item and
go to an appropriate list to tell all that'll listen your views on
that item!
3) Vendors are allowed to advertise their web sites, catalogs, or
other means of getting information on their wares, but no direct
advertising, or price listing. The list isn't designed to handle
catalog listings!
4) No telemarketing of any type; this includes multi-level marketing,
get-rich schemes, Long-distance services, or any other such items
sold by those annoying people that call and give themselves away with
their first line of "How are you today, Mister ...".
It wouldn't be fair to allow this type of marketing when the list
member would have no satisfaction of blowing a raspberry and hanging
up! (Personally, giving the phone to your 3 year old child seems to
annoy those people more than the raspberry!)
5) Absolutely no lengthy discussions on this list, especially if it
has nothing to do with an item being bought, sold, or traded! If
someone asks for info on an item, such as "is it speech-friendly", or
other pre-purchasing questions, then please answer it if you know the
answer, but please don't start a discussion on the ethics of a
company's copyright methods, sales tactics, etc. We all know that
every industry has their sleazy hairballs, and the blind community
isn't without theirs, and chances are that we all already know who
they are, being that the community isn't all that large.
Lastly, please use common sense when buying or selling a product; make
sure it isn't a pirated item; ask about transferring registrations;
warranty conditions; and shipping/handling costs--the same cautions
you'd address if you were buying the product from your local Mall!
Happy bartering!!

Item #146 Monsoon - Open Chat Mailing List
Some of you might be interested in my mailing list. For those of you who
have already heard about it, Monsoon has moved to a reliable server.
Subscription directions are at the bottom.
I have been subscribed to many other lists over the years, and they all
seem to focus on one topic. While that is fine with some, others (like me)
prefer a mixture of subject matter. After all, "Variety is the spice of
life." With that in mind, I came up with a mailing list called "monsoon".
A monsoon is defined as a periodic rainy season or large storm. Storms
have lots of weather asscociated with them: hail, lightning, snow, wind,
etc. Therefore, I want my mailing list to be a monsoon of topics. These
are the kinds of subjects that I'll post to the list, and I encourage my
subscribers to submit the same:
COOKING:
Have a recipe that you're just dying to share, or are you a disaster in the
kitchen? Post either way!
ENTERTAINMENT:
Read a good book? Have a favorite movie or television show? Tell us about
it!
HUMOR:
Who doesn't love jokes and fun stuff? All humor posted must be kept
relatively CLEAN.
QUOTES AND SIGNATURES:
Do you have a favorite and/or interesting quote to share? Come across a
great ASCII graphic in someone's signature? Show it to us!
NATURE:
If you CAN see the forest for the trees and the ocean for the water, let's
go hiking or stroll along the beach.
Animals - Do you have any pets? Share their antics with us!
Weather - Like the image of two old men sitting on the front porch,
discussing the weather? Then, it feels like rain here!
TECHNOLOGY:
Did you find a cool site on the Web, or are you ready to trash that PC?
We'll either sign a guestbook, or try to help you.
WRITING:
Poems - If you composed or found a poem worthy of Emily Dickinson (or not),
feel free to share it with us.
Stories - Proud of that short story you wrote? Why not submit it?!
Personal Essays - Got something to say about the state of the world? Are
you the next Dave Barry or Lewis Grizzard? Express yourself here!
I will keep the list unmoderated because this is a free country. However,
I have three ground rules, listed in order of importance:
1. Absolutely no flaming. This list is to be enjoyed by all subscribers.
2. Absolutely no profanity. I hear plenty of vulgar language in public,
but I'd like to make this list an oasis for those who speak in an educated
manner.
3. Absolutely no SPAM. Do not post advertisements here.
Continual breaches of these rules will result in the immediate removal of
the culprit by the list-owner.
*To be added to my list, you simply send a message to majordomo.
There are two ways to do it:
address-- To: monsoon-request@MyList.net
message-- subscribe
 OR
address-- To: majordomo@MyList.net
message-- subscribe monsoon
Use monsoon-digest as the list name if you prefer the digest version.
Sincerely,
Chad A. Bumgarner
Monsoon List-Owner

Item #147 blind-issues list

If you are in the mood for a spirited
debate, Blind-Issues can accommodate.

Many things affect the lives of the blind and visually
impaired in everyday life. With this in mind, we thought a
list which dealt with the major issues of the day would be
a welcome addition to the lists specifically designed for
the blind and visually impaired.

Topics which bog down and consume other E-mail lists are
welcome
on Blind-Issues. such as:
Blind Organizations and their goals, policies, conventions and
treatment of social issues
transportation issues specific to the blind
discrimination shown by society toward the blind
The general anger and frustration which may be a part of
every day life
and whatever else makes you a little hot under the collar.

The rules on Blind-Issues are simple:

1. There will never be posting of private messages permitted
under any condition.

2. No public flaming or chastising of others, take it to
private
E-mail if you feel the need.

3. No profanity. It is possible to discuss and present your
points without the use of such vocabulary. You will find other
people will listen to your viewpoint more if you refrain from
this.

4. No cross-posting to other lists unless you receive prior
permission of the list owners.

The enrollment for blind-Issues is open. You may subscribe and
unsubscribe as often as you like. Remember you can also set to
nomail if you are going to be gone temporarily.

We want Blind-Issues to be a list for you to vent your
frustrations or
a place to find a sympathetic ear. If you are in the mood
for a
spirited debate, blind-issues can accommodate!

Item #156 EManna - A Christian Daily Devotional List
I found a great service on the web and got inspired to introduce
this FREE daily devotional/online Bible study to you and people like
you who may be interested in God, Christ, and the church, but not
necessarily in religion. This service is called eManna.
Abraham Lincoln once said that "the Bible is the best gift
God has ever given to man." All who know its history would
agree that it is truly a unique book. The Bible reveals God,
Christ, man, the past and the future, but above all -- the Bible
conveys to us the very life and Spirit of God. When we open
ourselves to its speaking and revelation, it becomes the seed of
life that enlivens, refreshes, strengthens and transforms our
inward being.
eManna gives us this Bread of Life delivered daily via email!
A few verses from the Bible and a short inspiring "elucidation"
feeds our spirit and soul, strengthens us from within, and fills us
with encouragement and insight.
Some days eManna strengthens our faith, other days it
provides a fresh new way of understanding the Word, and
then there are days when it challenges our knowledge of
the Word of God. But every day the pure word of the Bible
is opened without catering to any particular school
of theology, and every day my own heart has been stirred toward God.
eManna can be used as
A help for a personal devotional/Bible study time.
A help for group Bible studies and fellowship.
A tool for shepherding new believers.
An introduction to unbelievers to the riches in God's Word.
To receive your FREE subscription, write to paul@futuregame.com or
simply Reply to this email, and I can sign you up.
If somehow you don't like eManna, you can unsubscribe at any time
without any hassle.
			Sincerely,
			Paul Smith

Item #157 This Is True
++ WHAT IS THIS IS TRUE
++ E-MAIL PRIVACY
++ TRUE's ACCEPTABLE USES ("Forwarding")
++ HOW TO CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS OR UNSUBSCRIBE
++ OTHER THIS IS TRUE SERVICES AND PRODUCTS
++ OTHER EXCELLENT INTERNET ENTERTAINMENT RESOURCES
++ CONTACTING US

We're glad to have you aboard. We hope you enjoy TRUE!

++ WHAT IS THIS IS TRUE ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

THIS is TRUE is a weekly syndicated newspaper column by Randy Cassingham
that summarizes recent bizarre-but-TRUE news stories from the world's
"legitimate" press. Each story is punctuated by Randy's wild, often
ironic, and sometimes rather opinionated comments. TRUE was published
in a different format for nearly eight years -- ending in June 1994,
when it became a commercial product in newspapers and on the Net.

EACH ISSUE is 7-9 short stories, plus a true "headline of the week",
plus some notes at the bottom from Randy, such as responses to reader
mail, notes about public appearances, etc. The free distribution of
"This is True" delivers about half that amount of text, and is sent
almost every weekend. Its free distribution is subsidized by
advertising in the text (please contact us if you're interested in
advertising your product or service). Ads are generally limited to 7
lines each, and are clearly marked so you know that they aren't part
of the editorial text. We strictly limit the number of ads so you
won't get overwhelmed with extra stuff. We NEVER send separate ads-
only messages, or EVER give your e-mail address to advertisers! See
  the next section for details.

++ E-MAIL PRIVACY ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WE *HATE* JUNK MAIL! "Spam" mail is the bane of the Internet. If you
aren't bothered by it, you probably will be soon. We REFUSE to add to
this illegitimate use of the Internet: we not only WILL NOT provide
your e-mail address to ANY advertiser, we actually work rather hard
to keep it secret. You don't have to request that your e-mail address
be "concealed" -- we "conceal" ALL subscriber addresses. Further, if
you wish, you can log into the Lyris server and set a password on
your address to further protect you. To set your password, you can go
  to http://www.lyris.net/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=this-is-true and log
in to the Lyris interface on the Web and following the instructions.
If you don't have a web browser and want to set a password, send an
e-mail to this-is-true-request@lyris.net with the message:
       set password=password
You will get a confirmation message.

THIS IS TRUE has been very proactive in educating Internet users about
what spam is, why it's bad, and what can be done about it. We
encourage you to learn more -- the more you know about spam and
e-mail scams, the less likely YOU will be victimized by it. Please
visit our web site and select the SPAM INFORMATION page, OR you can
get the text of our spam information by e-mail by sending a message
  to: NoSpam@mailback.com

++ TRUE's ACCEPTABLE USES ("Forwarding") +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TRUE *IS* copyrighted, all rights reserved worldwide. This means that
TRUE may NOT be copied, stored, archived, reprinted OR BROADCAST
without prior, written permission. NOTE that permission IS GRANTED to
manually forward individual copies of the free e-mail edition of TRUE
to your friends, PROVIDED that you copy it in its entirety from the
title and byline at the top through the end of the copyright notice
at the bottom, AND so long as no fee is charged for the forwarding.
-Please note, however, this permission DOES NOT EXTEND TO POSTING ON
BBSs or automatic retransmissions via mailing lists or reflectors, or
ANY commercial use! We REQUEST that you do not forward TRUE more
than three times to any one person -- if your friends like TRUE, we
prefer they get their own subscription. WE REWARD READERS WHO REPORT
VIOLATIONS OF OUR COPYRIGHT TO US!

INTRANET ADMINS and *Sysops* of BBSs can receive permission to carry
TRUE on their systems. It's a great way to encourage people to log in
regularly (perhaps even to attract employees to internal corporate
news at your work site!) To get permission, see the "Copyright info"
page on our web site; we just need some statistical info. If in doubt
as to what is allowed by our copyright, PLEASE ASK -- contact info is
  included below.

++ HOW TO CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS OR UNSUBSCRIBE +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

YOU CAN CHANGE your address and unsubscribe via the web. Just pop over
  to http://www.lyris.net/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=this-is-true and
"log in" with the address we have for you. (You can see what address
that is by looking at the bottom of any issue of TRUE delivered to
  you by this server.)

IF YOU DON'T have web access, the astoundingly easy way to unsubscribe
is to simply send an e-mail to leave-this-is-true@lyris.net . If you
have changed addresses and don't have the ability to send a message
to unsubscribe from the old address, simply send the ENTIRE COPY of
any edition "This is True" delivered from Lyris to the address you
want deleted to leave-this-is-true@lyris.net -- the server should be
able to do it for you. If all else fails, send a note to us at
this-is-true-owner@lyris.net explaining the problem, and we'll try
to help, but please do try it yourself FIRST!

TO SUBSCRIBE AGAIN, you can enter your address via the web interface,
or you can send an e-mail FROM THE ADDRESS YOU WANT SUBSCRIBED to
join-this-is-true@lyris.net -- it doesn't really matter what the
  subject or message says.

NOTE THAT no matter which method you use to subscribe, you will be
sent a CONFIRMATION NOTICE. This is here to PROTECT YOU from others
putting your address in the subscription form to harass you. You'll
get an e-mail from Lyris asking you to confirm that you really meant
to subscribe. When you follow the instructions contained in the
confirmation e-mail message and confirm your subscription, you'll be
added and will get this message as a welcome.

++ OTHER THIS IS TRUE SERVICES AND PRODUCTS ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

THERE ARE *TWO* FEEDS of "This is True". This welcome message is sent to
those who have subscribed to the FREE feed. On this feed, TRUE is sent
out most every week with about HALF the stories from the column. It is
sent about a week after the header date to give our paying clients a
short "exclusive". There are NO online archives (if you find any,
please let us know all about it -- they are violating our copyright,
and we reward people who notify us of copyright infringements!)

THE OTHER FEED is our "Premium" subscription. Premium subscribers get
  the following benefits:
+ YOUR copy of TRUE will go out sooner than the free feed by several
days -- not the week or so delay of the free feed
+ Premium edition contains the ENTIRE column and is sent EVERY week --
even when there isn't a free transmission) -- you'll get about DOUBLE
   the TRUE!
 + NO inline/third-party advertising
+ A 20% discount on "This is True" books. No special coupons required,
   no minimums, no maximums.

WE HAVE *NO PROBLEM* with your being on the free feed. Stay as long
as you want. Once you've sampled TRUE and decide you like it enough
to go Premium so you can get ALL the stories each week, you can upgrade
your subscription at any time. Here's how:
+ Subscriptions are just US$15 for a full year.
+ Send your check or money order, or
 + Send Visa/Mastercard/Discover/AmEx info, and
+ Include your e-mail address! and, please, snail mail address, to
+ Freelance Communications, PO Box 17326, Boulder CO 80308, or
+ Fax your credit card and e-mail address to 303 742-8074, or
+ visit our web site http://www.thisistrue.com for a link to
our SECURE (encrypted) online credit card ordering page, or
 + send a blank e-mail to getPGP@thisistrue.com for a copy of our
PGP public key so you can send the info by encrypted e-mail.
(The public key is also on our web site, and on the MIT keyserver.)
+ You may update your e-mail address as often as necessary,
but there are no refunds or back issues available if you drop
off the net temporarily or permanently.
+ The paid feed is for personal use only. The Premium edition may
NOT be forwarded to friends, distributed, posted on BBSs or
   Intranets, etc.

EACH YEAR, the This is True columns are compiled into book form, with
more than 500 TRUE stories and weird headlines per volume. TWO book
volumes have been published, with a third due very soon. The books
make a GREAT gift -- we've NEVER had one returned under our
satisfaction guarantee. They're THAT FUN! The books also contain
many EXTRA stories and headlines that didn't make it into the
weekly columns. And, they make a GREAT gift!

Our TrueInfo system is an automated e-mail responder that enables
readers who don't have web access to get details about how to buy
copies of the This is True books, how to upgrade your e-mail
subscription, and other topics. Simply send a blank e-mail to
TrueInfo@thisistrue.com and it will respond within minutes with a list
of available topics. If you do have web access, our site has all these
details AND a link to a SECURE (encrypted) order page for books and
  Premium subscriptions. See http://www.thisistrue.com.

Item #170 Lynx Links Mailing List
From: spratz@freenet.edmonton.ab.ca
Hello. My name is Sean, and I'm promoting a new e-zine called Lynx
Links, which is of special interest to both blind and sighted users alike.
It contains reviews to text-heavy, graphics-light internet resources.

  Here's the press kit:

Announcing Lynx Links, the newsletter for the discerning Lynx user.

In response to all the poorly implemented frames, unusable imagemaps,
ill-conceived tables, slow-loading graphics-heavy sites, and [SUBMIT]
buttons that you discover are undefined to Lynx only after spending
fifteen minutes filling out the form, we have created Lynx Links.

The sites reviewed in this digest are, naturally, Lynx-friendly. But this
does not render them useless to users of those other browsers. They are,
in fact, some of the best sites we've found on the net, and we highly
recommend them to all surfers, not just Lynx users.

We feature an eclectic mix of sites, reflecting the interests of our
staff. But then, our staff consists of regular folks who surf around just
like you, so we're sure you'll find at least one bookmark-worthy gem in
each digest.

Enjoy the latest issue!

OTR-L is a mailing list dedicated to the topic of oldtime radio. The list will

Dollar, from Jack Benny to Suspense. Other aspects of oldtime radio, such as
news delivery and advertising, could also be explored. So just sit back and
enjoy the show!

Item #181 Sportstalk
Sportstalk-l is intended to be just that--a discussion of sports of all
sorts. During my recuperation, one of the things I have been subjected to
in mass quantities has been very inane sports talk radio. It totally
amazes me how many people out there who call themselves sports fans are so
seemingly ignorant. I have created Sportstalk-L as a possible vehicle for
those who want to talk about all aspects of the sporting world in a
rational, intelligent manner. Do you think that Michael Jordan is
overrated? If so, why and how? Who do you think is the best major league
baseball manager, and why? How about them Cowboys? G Anyway, you get the
idea. I see the possibilities of discussion as almost infinite.
To subscribe, send Email to sportstalk-l-request@eskimo.com with the word
"subscribe" in the subject line.

Item #201 Israeli Blind Issues
Hi everybody, my name is Rafi Cohen, I am a blind software engineer
currently working for an American software company which has a branch here
in Israel. I am a quiet subscriber to these list for a long time. I enjoy
learning from these list, adn as a software engineer I even feel in some
situations that I may contribute some solutions. Unfortunately, as I am
quite busy in everyday life, I read the messages from these lists with a
delay of some weeks. As problems are solved in hours by some knowledgeable
people, I think that there may be no sense to send somebody such a
solution after weeks.
Anyway, I hope that the folowing will not be too off-topic for these
lists. I thought that some people around the world might be interested in
that.
I established a new mailing list by the name of ibi-l (Israeli blind
issues list), which as it's name shows, is dedicated to issues related to
blindness in general, and computers and technology for the blind,
particularly. For example, problems raised due to using Hebrew.
To subscribe to this list, send a message to majordomo@actcom.co.il.
Leave the subject blank, and in the body of the message write the
folowing: subscribe ibi-l
To send a message to the list use the folowing address: ibi-l@actcom.co.il
Thank you very much for your patience and sorry to waste bandwidth.

condition, or people who care for patients. I have ptc, but it isn't the
cause of my blindness.
any one interested in joining this list, should simply send an E-mail
to me, and I'll add you to the list, that simple.
     my address is:
n6yr@idir.net
ptc is simply excessive cranial pressure, also called benign increased
intracranial pressure. This is not blood pressure, but the pressure of the
clear fluid which is inside the brain and spinal cord.

The purpose of this list is to provide guide dog users and other
interested people with an easy way to access information about guide dogs
and to assist people in dealing with issues related to working with a
guide dog. Topics can include but are not limitted to the benefits and
disatvantages of using a guide dog, guide dog schools, training, care,
equipment, puppy raising, public access issues, legislation as it affects
guide dog users, and public attitudes about guide dogs and their use by the
blind as well as the activities of the National association of guide Dog
Users. If you are trying to contact your puppy raiser, or fellow classmates
from your guide dog school please feel free to post contact information here
but we would ask that such posts be kept to a minimum, and any and all
non-guide dog-related correspondence be kept private, or posted to a more
appropriate list. We would like to allow for open questions, although we
will not permit an endless debate between guide dog users and cane users over
the merits of either cane or dog as a mobility tool. We believe each has
its place. Likewise we will not condone the use of inappropriate language.
