STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL ADVISORY - Iran
============================================================
IRAN - WARNING
 February 18, 1992

The Department of State continues strongly to advise U.S. citizens
to avoid all travel to Iran. Travel to Iran continues to be
dangerous because of the generally anti-American atmosphere and
Iranian government hostility to the U.S. Government. U.S. citizens
traveling to Iran have been detained without charge, arrested and
harassed by Iranian authorities. Persons in Iran who violate
Iranian laws, such as those concerning proper wearing apparel, may
face penalties which are at times severe.

U.S./Iranian dual nationals are particularly at risk as they are
considered Iranian nationals. Dual citizens often have their U.S.
passports confiscated and may be denied permission to leave Iran, or
encounter other problems with Iranian authorities. If you are the
spouse or child of an Iranian citizen, you may be considered to be
an Iranian citizen also, and you may be required to enter Iran using
an Iranian passport. More information on dual nationality can be
obtained from the Office of Overseas Citizens Services, Department
of State, Washington, D.C. 20520-4818.

The U.S. government does not have diplomatic relations with the
Islamic Republic of Iran. The Swiss Government, acting through its
Embassy in Tehran, serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests
in Iran. Iranian officials have often prevented Swiss officials
>From providing even minimal protective services to U.S. citizens.
The limited consular services provided by the U.S. Interests Section
of the Swiss Embassy do not include issuing U.S. passports or visas
to the U.S. The U.S. Interests Section of the Swiss Embassy in
Tehran is located at Bucharest Avenue, 17th Street, No. 5, Tehran,
Iran. The local telephone numbers are: 625-223, 625-224 and
626-906. The U.S. Interests Section is open Sunday through Thursday.

 No. 92-026

This replaces the travel advisory of January 18, 1989, to reflect
current conditions and to add information about problems dual
U.S./Iranian citizens may have in Iran.
