Panama - Notice
 November 22, 1991

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens visiting Panama that
there is a high incidence of crime in the Panama City and Colon
areas.  The U.S. Embassy Consular Section regularly receives reports
>From U.S. citizen tourists and business persons who have been
victims of crimes ranging from armed robberies to muggings, purse
snatchings and petty thefts.  The Embassy urges U.S. travelers to
exercise the following precautions:

-- Use prudence and exercise good personal security practices when
moving about the country, particularly in the Panama City and Colon
areas.

-- Minimize the amount of cash and other valuables you carry with
you.  Do not carry items of personal value that cannot be replaced.

-- Avoid going alone into poorer areas of town, particularly after
dark.  Choose restaurants that have adequate security.  Park in well
lighted areas.

-- Avoid demonstrations and crowds.

-- Monitor the U.S. Southern Command Network (SCN) television or
radio stations for current information and advisories.

U.S. citizens should register with the Consular Section of the U.S.
Embassy upon arrival.  If you should become a crime victim please
