STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL ADVISORY - Poland
============================================================
POLAND - NOTICE
 March 5, 1992

Summary: The Department of State advises U.S. citizens traveling
to Poland that while business and pleasure travel is generally safe,
reported incidents of crime against foreign visitors and local
residents have increased. Travelers are advised to exercise
particular caution against thieves when traveling by train, public
trams and buses. Street crime in Poznan and Krakow is not as
prevalent as in Warsaw, but travelers using the train stations in
all three cities should exercise caution. End Summary.

Trains, Trams and Buses - Organized groups of thieves and
pickpockets appear to be operating in the train stations, trains,
trams and buses of Warsaw, Poznan, Krakow and other major cities.
The groups operate by surrounding the traveler to distract his/her
attention while boarding or exiting the train, and then picking the
pockets. Such incidents can be avoided by alert travelers who
safeguard their valuables.

Cars - Cars are often the target of break-ins. Thieves will break
into cars even in well lighted, well traveled areas to steal objects
of negligible value. Travelers should not leave any items visible
in the car.
