        signer.  I  made  this  decision because I specialize in residential
        work and concepts that apply to residential work do not  necessarily
        apply to commerical buildings.   Commercial buildings and residences
        are  functional  opposites  in  the sense that a commercial building
        must induce the public to enter while a residence  must keep the pub-
        lic at bay.   A residence, after all, is a shelter not only from the
        physical  elements but from the pressures and the harassments of the
        outside world.
             This does not mean that a residence cannot be showy, even a lit-
        tle  ostentatious; as  far as I am concerned, there is nothing wrong
        with a certain amount of that provided that the  day-by-day  livabil-
        is  not compromised and the decorative effects are kept secondary to
        an overall attitude of quiet and withdrawl.   And  that, I  feel, is
        best accomplished by being low-key and casual, not only in reference
        to  the house itself but to the selection and the positioning of the
        furnishings.  Visual  harmony  must be considered, of course, but as
        an accompaniment, not as a solo trumpet played front stage.
             Conversely, if  a  residence should have a diffused, easy charm,
        a commercial establishment should have clat.  Nothing can be gratui-
