"No, not all of the world, of course not. But damnit, enough of
the world so you can't get away from it, I mean really away from it,
because if you keep looking at shit, all you can see is shit. Shit
becomes a way of life. You might hate it but it still becomes a way
of life. I mean by that, if you're not shoveling it, you're dodging
it or denying it or trying to sprinkle perfume on it."
             "Okay," she said.
"So I've decided to hell with it. I want no more of it."
"Hey, wait a minute," she said. "A little while ago you were
talking about feeling worthwhile. Well, isn't being a civil engineer
worthwhile? I think it is. Aren't bridges and dams and irrigation
systems and things like that worthwhile?"
"Maybe," he said. "It all depends on where they are and what
they're used for. But how about some of the other things that we
do? Like crummy subdivisions and cheap shopping centers and free-
ways? Like the New Jersey Turnpike."
"Well, I will say one thing. I certainly can't get too excited
over something like the New Jersey Turnpike. Do you know how many
people get slaughtered on that thing every year?"
