                   CTS 3.1 UPGRADE INFORMATION

Version 3.1 of the Contact Tracking System corrects some minor
bugs found in previous versions and adds some new features. Pre-
defined reports now include a 3-across format and return address labels.
A report filter can specify that only tagged or untagged records be
included. The STATUS report allows filtering on both CONTACT and
related STATUS records. Phone number and zip code fields have an
unformatted option, as well as American and British formats. An
envelope may be printed sideways with a laser printer, as well as the
regular way. The documentation is better organized and more
comprehensive, including more tips on advanced usage.

Installing CTS for the first time is especially easy with an
automatic process. The file INSTALL.TXT explains this.)

If you have been regularly using version 3.0 and have not yet
registered, then I ask you to do so. Much labor has gone into the
development of CTS. It is affordable to individuals because commercial
production and marketing costs are saved with the shareware approach.
For it to succeed, however, authors need reward in return for value
users gain after a risk-free evaluation. For your convenience, a
printable registration form is provided in the file REGISTER.TXT
(which could also be returned on disk).

No conversion of data is necessary in upgrading from version 3.0 to 3.1.
the second distribution archive, CTS31#2.ZIP, is also not needed for
upgrading. Simply copy into the CTS directory the new files with
extensions of .FOX, .LBL, and .TXT. This might be done with the
command at the DOS prompt as shown below:

C:\CTS> pkunzip -o b:cts31#1 *.fox *.lbl *.txt

This example assumes that CTS is already installed in a directory called
C:\CTS and that the first distribution archive is on a floppy disk in drive
B. The -o parameter tells the pkunzip utility to overwrite any existing
files with the same names. Be careful to specify to pkunzip the
particular file extensions it should uncompress. Otherwise, it may
uncompress too much, including empty .DBF and .DBT files that may
overwrite your data!

To safeguard against an irreversible accident, it is advisable to
back up at least the data files in the CTS directory before upgrading.
(Use the backup utility within CTS, or use the DOS copy command to
copy files with .DBF and .DBT extensions to another disk or directory.)

The following information was previously written to describe
upgrading to version 3.0 from versions before this. It also applies to
upgrading from these versions directly to version 3.1.

                   CTS 3.0 UPGRADE INFORMATION

Version 3.0 of the Contact Tracking System adds many new
features. These include memo fields in which variable length text can
be entered and searched; capacity for international addresses; consistent
dialing ability with almost any modem; mail merge capabilities with
WordPerfect; classification of STATUS records according to user
defined types; a more powerful "list mode"; more sophisticated transfers
between CONTACT files; user defined label formats; and several
others.

To upgrade from a previous version of CTS to this 3.0
version, take the following steps.

1. Back up your database files. This can be done using the backup
utility within CTS or by issuing the
following DOS command:

C:\CTS> copy *.db* <destination>

where <destination> is the drive and/or directory where you want to
store the backup database files. The above example assumes you have
installed CTS in a directory by that name on your C drive. If you
installed it in another directory, then issue the same commands from
there instead.

2. Delete all files in your CTS directory. Of course, make sure that
your backup worked properly before doing this.

3. Copy the CTS30#1.ZIP and CTS30#2.ZIP files into your CTS
directory.

4. Enter the command:

C:\CTS> pkunzip *.zip

This assumes that the PKUNZIP.EXE uncompression utility has either
been copied into your CTS directory or is on your DOS path.

5. Copy the backup files back into the CTS directory.

6. Run the 'CONVERT.BAT' batch file by entering the command:

C:\CTS> convert

7. Enter the command:

C:\CTS> ctsdemo

or

C:\CTS> cts

depending on whether you have the demo or fully functioning version
of the system. The system should load and bring you into the
configuration module, where you will create a new configuration file.

The installation is now complete. Use the F1 help key at various
points to learn more about the system. Read the 'CTS.TXT'
documentation file to get an overview of the whole system, even if you
are not looking for details. If you have problems getting started, you
may give me a call. Please note, however, that I can only guarantee
technical support beyond the installation process to persons who have
registered the software. Registration information is contained in the
'REGISTER.TXT' file.
