                          SCREEN READERS
              ASAP, AUTOMATIC SCREEN ACCESS PROGRAM
                           By MicroTalk

ASAP is a system for providing blind computer users with access
to applications software on MS-DOS computers. While there are
other screen access packages available, ASAP takes a whole new
approach to the challenge of providing meaningful speech output
to a variety of screen formats and interface techniques. Instead
of requiring you to configure the speech system for each program
you use, ASAP determines the appropriate text to speak by
observing the application's reaction to your commands. In other
words it looks at the screen, just as a sighted user does, and
provides you feedback about what catches the human eye. Since
nearly all programs try to be visually appealing, this approach
works beautifully, and those programs become audacious appealing
too. Finally, you can use programs like your sighted piers,
concentrating on learning the new application rather than fooling
with the access to that application. Instead of forcing you to
become a computer expert and do lots of work to identify a screen
layout, ASAP does the job for you. It automatically focuses on
light bars, soft cursors, pop up windows, and all the other
modern techniques for making software friendlier to the visual
user. With ASAP you'll praise the new interface styles, too.
Along with Automatic operation, ASAP features:
Instant Silence: When you press a key, old speech stops and
ASAP concentrates on the new information associated with the
press of that key. This prevents you from hearing material that
you've long lost interest in and allows you to use your valuable
time with current information.
Turbo browse: ASAP gives you the unique ability to skip over just
a little text. This lets you skip past parts of programs or
displays that you're not interested in or parts that you've
already heard too many times. The perfect example of a use for
this feature is seen when you request a directory listing with
DOS's dir command. Rarely do you want to hear "volume in drive C
Is unlabeled, directory of C:\". With turbo browse you can skip
such little annoyances at your will.
Quick Review: ASAP lets you look at any part of the screen
obtain spellings, determine the phonetic pronunciation of a
letter, and more just by using your computer's numeric keypad.
You don't have to go into a special mode to look at the screen
then exit that mode to get back to work. If you prefer a review
mode ASAP provides one. You can access any review command without
removing your fingers from home row.
Auto Read: ASAP lets you read an entire document with a single
command. This proves invaluable for reading large amounts of text
without having to move through the material a line at a time.
When you catch a spot you need to edit you can stop the reading
and take care of the problem.
Lexicon: ASAP uses a lexicon to treat pronunciations of proper
names and difficult to pronounce words and acronyms. You can add
as many words as you like to the lexicon.
Column detection: ASAP can examine the layout of the screen and
restrict reading to the particular column of interest. This
feature is extremely useful when reading or editing multi-column
documents.
ASAP requires about 50k of your computer's memory and has the
capability to "load high." With other access systems requiring
much more,ASAP is one of the smallest and absolutely the most
simple and powerful system available. This compact size and raw
power is possible because the ASAP software is written entirely
in assembly language. Assembly language is much tougher for the
programmer, but it gives the user the maximum speed available to
the computer and requires the least amount of memory. After all,
that's what ASAP is all about it--makes your computer do the work
so you can concentrate on the task at hand.
ASAP is available now from Ferguson Enterprises. It is so
powerful and simple to use that you'll be using the program
within minutes of receiving the system.
It currently supports Accent, Audapter, BrailleMate, Braille 'n
Speak, DEC-TALK, DoubleTalk, Echo, Lap Talk, LiteTalk, Sounding
Board, SynPhonix, and VoTalker synthesizers. The software also
supports any other synthesizer that connects via Serial or
parallel ports by letting the user fill in the speech synthesizer
codes.
If you'd like to try ASAP with other synthesizers, you can call
for a Demonstration-disk call (605) 546-2366 and get the files
asap-zip and asap-doc.zip. A demonstration cassette is also
available from Ferguson Enterprises. It shows you the speech
quality and power of ASAP and is available at no charge.

ASAW, AUTOMATIC SCREEN ACCESS FOR WINDOWS
                           By Microtalk

Automatic Screen Access for Windows (ASAW), as its name
indicates, provides the blind computer user with state-of-the-art
access to modern applications running in the Windows environment.

ASAW works by gathering information about what your screen does
and announces that information automatically through one of
several supported speech synthesizers.

ASAW works with Windows versions 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, and
Windows95. The program itself requires around 500K of RAM, but
MicroTalk recommends your machine has at least 4 megabytes of RAM
for use with Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups and at least
8 megabytes of RAM for use with Windows95.

Like its predecessor, the Automatic Screen Access Program for
DOS, ASAW automatically announces text in response to how the
application you're using responds to your commands. That means
there are no hard-coded actions for specific keys; instead, ASAW
takes note of what is currently on the screen then compares and
analyzes new screen activity to decide what should be spoken.

In addition to its automatic response to screen activity, ASAW
gives you simple and effective means of reviewing text already on
the screen. ASAW employs the numeric keypad, at the right end of
your keyboard, to review the screen's contents. There is no need
to go into a special "review" mode to examine the screen in
detail; instead, you press any of the screen access keys at any
time, then resume with the application's commands without having
to tell ASAW you're through looking at the screen.

The review screen keys couldn't be simpler--the top row of
numbers on the numeric keypad acts as ASAW's line reading keys;
the 7 reads the previous line of text and images on the screen,
the 8 reads the current line, and 9 reads the next line.
Similarly, the middle row of numbers on the keypad reads the
previous, current, and next word or image on the screen, and,
finally, the bottom row of numbers reads the previous, current,
and next letter or image. Once you're reading a particular place
on the screen, it's a simple matter to move the mouse pointer to
that position. ASAW supplies a method of moving, clicking, and
even dragging the mouse pointer.

This simple and automatic approach to screen access means that a
totally new user can begin using applications within minutes of
the program's installation without having to learn the screen
access program first.

Along with automatic response and simple review commands, ASAW
provides a number of controls that let you taylor an
application's speech behavior to your preferences. If, for
example, you like to hear all the punctuation pronounced in a
specific application, you turn that control on, and ASAW retains
that setting for that application from session to session.

ASAW employs a state-of-the-art image recognition analysis
algorithm and lets you assign names to images. Once you name an
image, that image's name gets used when ASAW describes that
image. More importantly, however, ASAW recognizes that image no
matter where it appears, so if you use a suite of applications
that use the same icons, you only need to label the image once.

While speech access is critical, ASAW realizes the ability to
silence that speech is just as important to efficient use of any
application. ASAW provides two different means of silencing
speech. One stops speech and leaves it off until you press
another key. The other method stops only the current phrase
being spoken when the command gets used. That way, you can skip
through familiar or irrelevant information until you get to the
text of interest.

Recognizing many blind users are new to the Windows environment,
MicroTalk provides a cassette tutorial with ASAW that takes you
through the basics of effectively using Windows based
applications both through Windows built-in keyboard commands and
with the mouse. In addition, the tutorial provides you with
practical information about behavior and characteristics common
to all Windows applications and shows you the best ways to
effectively work in a graphical user environment.

                           By GW Micro

VOICE ACCESS FOR WINDOWS

Window-Eyes was designed to add voice access to Windows 3.1 and
3.11. Window-Eyes is a stand-alone Windows application which
gives you total control over what you hear, when you hear it, and
how you hear it. Since Window-Eyes is a stand-alone Windows
screen reader, it does not require a particular DOS screen
reader. This means you can continue to use your existing DOS
screen reader while executing DOS programs and Window-Eyes while
executing Windows programs. However, Vocal-Eyes users will
appreciate the consistent design used throughout Window-Eyes.
Many of the familiar and powerful features of Vocal-Eyes can be
found in Window-Eyes. Although Window-Eyes is a new product, why
re-invent the wheel? The proven design philosophies of
Vocal-Eyes have been integrated as a base for Window-Eyes.
Vocal-Eyes users will surely appreciate the consistent user
interface which allows them to work faster with their Windows
applications instead of learning a new screen reader.

                     CONTACT TRACKING SYSTEM
                        by Access Success

CTS was designed to be a powerful, speech friendly mailing list
manager, able to meet a variety of common data management needs
in a manner convenient to blind and sighted users alike--at work,
at school, and at home.

Features include the following:

Installing the system conveniently with an automatic batch
process.

Storing of names, addresses, phone numbers, and
miscellaneous notes about any individual or organization.
Separating of contacts into different files based on
user-defined categories such as business organizations,
personal friends, miscellaneous acquaintances, co- workers,
and job leads. Contact records can easily be transferred from
one file to another.

Searching of contact records by any field of information,
including last name, company, city, state, and miscellaneous
notes (stored in a variable-length "memo field").

Dialing of a contact's phone number with a modem, thereby saving
having to look up, memorize, and then manually dial the
number. The work or home number may be specified and
whether the call is a local, long distance, or internal
(last five digits) number.

Generating a letter or envelope to a contact that
automatically formats and positions the contact's address
and the user's return address.

Producing various pre-formatted lists and mailing labels. Other
formats may be user-defined. Return address labels are also
possible.

Generating mail merge form letters in conjunction with the
WordPerfect word processor.

Supplying online context-sensitive help, as well as complete
documentation on disk and tape.

In performing these powerful operations, verbal and visual access
occur simultaneously. The most relevant information on the
screen at any time is spoken automatically using the default
settings of any screen reader program. Thus the learning and
operation of CTS are as easy and efficient for a blind person as
his or her sighted counterpart.

The price of the complete CTS package is $90. Given its
sophistication, it costs significantly less than most adaptive or
mainstream software.

                       RECOGNITA READER 3.0
Optical Character Recognition Software for visually impaired people

Recognita Reader 3.0 is an omnifont pre-trained multi-lingual OCR
software for page processing, designed for visually impaired
people. It opens new horizons for users, leading to better work
opportunities. The program can also be used in leisure time to
read classic or any other literature. It runs on IBM
compatible PCs under the MS DOS operating system.

Recognita Reader displays everything in character mode; the menu
structure is simple. The frequently used commands are on a
higher level in the menus. Selecting menus, submenus or
parameters for carrying out functions can all be done with the
keyboard. The program can be started from a command line or in
batch mode.
Greyscale scanning with auto-threshold, auto-deskewing and auto
image rotation give maximum input image quality. Recognita
Reader can take input from over one hundred scanner models,
and from image files in several formats.

The program automatically detects which page formats can be
accepted by the scanner in a configuration. It can read both
in portrait and landscape orientation. The program can
decompose complex page layouts. It also automatically separates
text and graphics and is able to handle tables and
multi-column text.
Basic and user dictionaries can improve the recognition accuracy
by correcting words during recognition, or can just flag suspect
words. Recognita Reader provides special proofing facilities for
visually impaired people (rejection symbol, missing character,
character before suspicious word). Recognized text can be
passed to a voice synthesizer, which can also read command
lines out loud.

                        TALKING DIRECTORY
                        by Access Success

Talking Directory is a speech friendly file, directory, and
program manager for IBM compatible personal computers. It
combines many utilities in a single, integrated environment
designed for convenient and powerful operation. Features include
the following:

"Point and shoot" alternative to DIR command. Specify any
directory that can be supplied to the DIR command of DOS. You
will have file by file access to the directory, allowing you to
perform an action on a file by pointing to it with the cursor,
rather than memorizing its name and typing it at a DOS prompt.
Common DOS file commands. Perform common DOS operations on a
file including copy, delete, and rename. The move command,
introduced in DOS 6, is also supported (regardless of your DOS
version).

Other file commands. Perform other operations on files including
displaying the size of a file or the date and time it was last
updated. View an ASCII or WordPerfect file with the built-in
document reader that has convenient searching and continuous
reading capabilities. Archive a file using the .ZIP compression
format. Attach a description to a file--up to a screen in
size--to help you identify or search for it later.

Multiple file processing. Perform operations on multiple files
after tagging them. Multiple file processing is possible with
the archive, copy, delete, move, unarchive, and other commands.
Directory commands. Perform operations on subdirectories as well
as files. You can go to, create, rename, and delete a
directory--even if it contains files. Sort a directory by file
name, extension, size, or time. Look inside a .ZIP archive as if
it were a subdirectory.

Flexible directory navigation. Navigate flexibly among the
entries in the current directory specification. You can go to
the next or previous entry and beginning or end entry. Jump
forward or backward by any number of entries. You can also jump
to an entry by providing its name, partial name, or a wildcard
specification. Yet another way to go to an entry is by searching
for one or more key words or phrases contained in its content or
a description you attach. This is a powerful way of overcoming
the limited descriptive ability of DOS file names.

Disk operations. Determine the size in bytes of the current
directory and the amount of free space remaining on the disk.
Check or set the volume label of a disk. Format a disk as high,
low, or the default density of that drive. Only floppy disks can
be formatted--there is no risk of formatting the hard disk! User
defined commands. Create up to a dozen user defined
commands that you might otherwise run from the DOS prompt. For
example, one command might load your word processor, another a
text editor, another a telecommunications program, database
program, etc. Even programs that take up a large amount of
memory can be run because TD swaps itself out of memory before
running them. You can also go to a DOS prompt at any time. You
will find even more features in Talking Directory, but the
preceding should convince you of its depth and flexibility.

Talking Directory is feature competitive with most directory
managers on the market. Unlike these competitors, however, every
feature of Talking Directory has been implemented in a manner
that is friendly to users of verbal screen output. Using the
default settings of any screen reader program, a blind user can
operate the program as efficiently as his or her sighted
counterpart who uses the visual display.

Talking Directory is now available from Ferguson Enterprises, and
comes with a tape tutorial.

MS-DOS, A speech Synthesizer, and a Screen Access System. PC
Typer is designed to be your assistant in helping students
develop their keyboarding skills. When you use the typer, you're
the Boss--The typer suplements and enhances your teaching.
Description: PC Typer reinforces learning of the characters on
the main part of the PC keyboard. While special keys such as,
the Function keys, insert, page up, page down, etc, can be
learned with the typer, and are used occasionally to command the
program. These keys are not practiced for speed and accuracy as
the regular characters are. Because every class room is unique,
the typer incorporates several special features that enable you
to adapt it to fit your particular needs:

Typing Practice is provided in different formats and includes a
variety of motivational features.

Thorough Record keeping of student performance is available.
Numerous features of the Typer can be controlled by the teacher.
Lessons on the disk can be adapted to accommodate your
particular needs.

Target Audience:

PC Typer can be used by anyone learning to type. The files
already on the disk, however, are appropriate for learners with a
developmental age of ten years or above. If you are working with
young students, learning disabled students, or anyone having
difficulty with the lessons, you may edit the files on the disk.
You can edit the existing lessons or create new ones, so that an
appropriate number of keys are presented. The correct amount of
practice is provided. The difficulty of words used in the files
is appropriate, and the lengths of key combinations, words,
phrases, and sentences, are suitable for your learners.

Overview of PC Typer:

PC Typer consists of two programs:
The Student program, and the teacher program.

The student program has four major components:

1. Keyboard drills--Where students work on prepared fingering
drills stored on the disk.

2. Hurry Scurry--A game for additional keyboarding practice.
The words and phrases in the game reinforce the keys practiced in
the keyboarding drills.

3. Open typing--Provides a blank screen for timed typing from
dictation or from copy.

4. Learn the keyboard--Announces keys or combinations of keys
pressed to help students learn the key location.

No matter what typing curriculum you are using, PC Typer fits
your needs because you can create your own lessons to match your
typing text!

The Teacher Program has three major components:

1. Custom the program--Lets you control numerous program
features such as weather student records are maintained. Whether
all students work on the same lesson or are allowed to choose
from a lesson list which motivational features are turned on in
the student program and so on.

2. Create/edit lessons--Lets you edit the lesson files on the
disk or create your own.

3. Work on student records--Lets you review, print, or delete,
student performance data.

The teacher program also contains the "Editor" which is as the
name implies, where you change the contents of existing drills or
create new ones.

Requirements to run

PC Typer is designed for use with speech and requires 250K of
free memory to run the Teacher or Student Programs separately.
To run the student program from within the Teacher Program (A
useful, but not essential feature), about 500K is needed. PC
Typer uses, any IBM compatible computer running MS-DOS. Most
commercially available Speech Synthesizers and Screen Access
Packages will work with the Typer for speech output; Likewise,
most large print Access Programs will work if you set them to
follow the program cursor.

                             MEGADOTS
                             by RDC.

You will be amazed at it's capabilities. MegaDots can quickly
translate a small or large document in a matter of seconds.
Knowing very little about a Braille Translator, or nothing at
all, you can easily and quickly translate your favorite book into
formatted text, ready to be brailled on your braille embosser.
If you don't have a Braille Embosser, you can still translate
documents or large amounts of text, and look at them on the
screen. If you wish, you can translate a document with MegaDots,
save it on disk, and take it to be brailled, or send it to your
favorite transcriber. This reduces the cost of formatting, and
makes brailling simple. In a short while, you will have paid for
a Braille Translator over and over again, when you send your work
out to be translated and then brailled. for example, a 60 page
manual in print, can cost almost $400 dollars, just for the
translating and formatting into braille text.
Instant Feedback In the MegaDots editing environment, once a
change is made, the user can see the results in their choice of
print or braille. Once the file has been translated, it is
quickly reformatted on the screen for the appropriate medium
(braille or print). If an error is noticed on the screen, the
user has the choice of fixing it in print or in braille.
Fast Translator and the "Round Trip". In MegaDots, once you press
the F5 button to translate a file, it takes just a few seconds.
The MegaDots back translator uses advanced techniques to make
sure it always reconstructs the original inkprint file. This
means that each time you have a correction to make, you can
decide whether you want to make the change in the print or the
braille version. This flexibility has never been possible with
any other product from Raised Dot or any other vendor.
Other MegaDots Features Braille files can be viewed on the
screen in one of four modes: braille dots, ASCII characters,
special pseudo-inkprint font, or line by line back- translation
into inkprint. Data entry can be done in the user's choice of
regular keyboard or 6-key braille keyboard. Generates Large
Print on a dot matrix printer Automatic formatting of braille
tables (the software calculates the tab stops!) Supports linear
braille devices. Loaded with "transcriber-friendly" features.
MegaDots Computer Requirement MegaDots requires an MS-DOS or IBM
compatible computer. A hard disk is absolutely required. We
strongly recommend that it be run on AT-class(286) computers or
above.

                  SCREEN MAGNIFICATION PROGRAMS

                              LP-DOS
                       by Optelec U.S. Inc.

LP-DOS is For those users who do not need to work under a
graphics environment, LP-DOS is
the version for you. LP-DOS enlarges the text on a computer
monitor for the user with low-vision. LP-DOS requires a
computer system using MS-DOS. LP-DOS requires EGA, VGA, and or
MCGA. It works with all MS-DOS applications like WordPerfect and
Lotus 1-2-3. LP-DOS also runs with many programs on CGA based
systems.

                          LP-DOS DELUXE
                       by Optelec U.S. Inc.

The Large Print DOS Deluxe Edition is the first product to
combine high quality text and graphics magnification. LP-DOS
Deluxe is totally interactive. This means that you see magnified
documents, pictures, and animation while you type, paint, or
play.

This new version supports Super-VGA and VGA systems, from 16
colors to 16 million! Its supports both Windows 95 and Windows
3.1.

The new LP-WINDOWS starts in split screen mode. The mouse
is double-size and set to high contrast. The LP-WINDOWS'
"auto-expose" feature ensures that the working area stays
in view both in large print and normal print at the same
time.

You can change these features via the LP-WINDOWS menu or toggle
the split screen on and off via simple keystroke.

We have tested the new LP-WINDOWS with a variety of Super-VGA
boards from ATI, Trident, Genoa, Video 7 and other
manufacturers. However, please be aware that SVGA does
not represent a single standard. If you have problems with
your system, then switch to VGA or to one of the Microsoft
supplied SuperVGA drivers.

Smooth panning may vary from one SVGA system to another. ATI's
Turbo Express pans smoothly in full screen, at high
resolution with 16 million colors. Many other boards do
as well. If nessessary, you can improve panning by
reducing the display resoution or the size of the panning
area by switching to split screen.

         Features of LP-DOS and LP-Windows:
LP-Windows has an entirely new look and feel that makes
LP-Windows as easy-to-use as classic LP-DOS.

* You can press the Left Shift key twice to popup the LP-Windows
        menu at any time.

* Simple popup organization lets you access LP-Windows
features and quickly resume your work.

* New "Mouse trap" options make it easy to see the mouse:
You can double the mouse size, reverse its image, and change
    background contrast.

* "Navigation" features enhance user control over mouse
motion. Easily target icons and other screen objects.
Lock mouse movement to the x and y directions. Control
the placement of the mouse on the magnified screen.

* Split screens let you display the normal image and
magnification at the same time.

* You can pan the main window, or the entire screen. Panning
options let you control speed and line wrap.

* Color options let you enhance the screen image. You can
reverse black and white, or change all screen colors.

* New viewfinder helps you locate the area that you want to see.
Choose a reverse block, or an eyeglass locator.

Easy to learn. LP-DOS and LP-Windows share the same quick keys
  and popup menu control.

                        SPECIALTY HARDWARE

                    THE BAT PERSONAL KEYBOARD
                           By Infogrip

The BAT Personal Keyboard is a an adaptive device which facilitates
keyboard input with only one hand using just seven keys. It can be
used in tandem with other input devices and with most hardware
systems and software applications. The keyboard is small, light
weight and compact so it can easily be transported and positioned
to meet an individual's special needs. With its word expansion and
macro capabilities, it can be customized for efficient keyboard
entry. The BAT personal keyboard makes it possible for disabled
persons with good use of only one hand and the ability to learn the
chords to access the computer keyboard efficiently, thus
potentially enhancing employment opportunity.

Characteristics of the BAT Personal Keyboard that will enhance
computer use for people with disabilities:

* Ergonomically designed to position the hand in the most
comfortable position. * Light and compact to allow for easy
mounting in any position, i.e. in lap, or on a wheel chair arm. * Very little arm or hand movement required for input. * Total
keyboard capability with only one hand to permit one hand touch
typing. * Allows for use of the regular keyboard and other input
devices, such as the mouseor design tablet, along with
one or both BAT personal keyboards to maximize input
capability. * Extensive macro and word expansion capability with
ChordEasy software which is easily programmable to allow
for individualization depending on a person's specific needs.
Macros and word expansions can be stored on disk
and activated quickly on any computer the person uses. * Learning curve has been shown to be shorter than that of the QWERTY
keyboard. Design of the chords was based on
research which considered both the biomechanical action required to
chord, and the cognitive process required to remember the
chord combinations, to develop the most efficient chord structure.
* Works with all AT or higher, PS-2 compatible, laptop computers
and with most Macintosh computers. * Portable and easily
connected through the keyboard port to the computer. * Does not use
a serial port and is not a TSR program, which saves memory and
minimizes conflict with other TSR programs. This is
frequent in office or school systems, and something that
rehabilitation counselors and prospective employers
will consider important. * Works with all software applications.

 PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

The BApersonal keyboard is an excellent adaptation for people who
have good use of only one hand because of a physical injury to,
amputation of, congenital absence or malformation of one hand or
arm. It is also good for persons who have limited range of motion
from a physical injury, congenital condition, or stroke or head
injury resulting in hemiplegia (paralysis on one side only). The
users need to have good control of finger movements on the
functional hand in order to accurately depress the finger
combinations for the chords. They also need to have the cognitive
skills required to learn and remember the chords.

POSITIONING

Positioning is a very important consideration when working with a
person who has a physical disability. The BAT Personal Keyboard
is compact, light and has a small footprint so that it can be
easily positioned or mounted in the most comfortable position for
the user. It can be placed in any orientation to allow the hand to
be in a relaxed and unstressed position. It will fit securely in
a person's lap or on a wheelchair tray. The rubber cushions on the
bottom provide stability from slipping. The flat and uncluttered
under side of the keyboard allows for easy mounting on a wheelchair
extension. The keyboard's built in hand rest provides support for
the hand in a comfortable position. Because the hand never has to
move from the seven keys, the user's arm may be stabilized or
supported in one position to compensate for weakness or limited
mobility.

INCREASE INPUT EFFICIENCY

Using the BAT Personal Keyboard together with the standard keyboard
is a way of increasing efficiency for people who have some use of
the second hand. With careful positioning of both the BApersonal
keyboard and the standard keyboard, the keyboard functions can be
split between the two, thus maximizing the person's input
capability.

PERMITS TOUCH TYPING WITH ONE HAND

One hand touch typing is difficult on the standard keyboard,
primarily because of problems with keyboard orientation without
taking the eyes away from the text to look at the keyboard. With
the BAT Personal Keyboard, the hand does not have to move from one
position and only the thumb moves from one key to another.
Therefore, the user's eyes stay with the text, eliminating the time
lost going back and forth. Studies have shown that learning the
chords required to make the letters on the BAT Personal Keyboard
and developing typing speeds of 30 - 50 words per minute require
less time than necessary to achieve comparable competency on the
standard keyboard.

INCREASED SPEED AND EFFICIENCY WITH MACROS

The BAPersonal Keyboard includes key latching, macro and word
expansion capabilities which have to be added through extra
software when using the standard keyboard. Macros and word
expansions may be used to input multiple keystroke program
functions, names, terms, and text which are used frequently. This
increases the input speed by cutting down the number of keystrokes
and decreasing the chance to key errors. When memory is a problem,
as is often the case with people who have had head injuries or
strokes, simple BAT macros may be used to replace complicated key
sequences. With the ChordEasy software, macros and word expansions
can be easily written, edited, and printed out to provide a record
of an individual's macros and the chords used to invoke them. The
ChordEasy software can be run from a disk, thus allowing the users
to always have their customized, special needs macros available.

 VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

The computer is an excellent tool which allows for the efficient
production of documents by people with visual impairments. The
development of assistive technologies which enhance and enlarge
text on the screen has made it possible for the visually impaired
to easily access information on the screen. The use of software
programs such as spell checkers and grammar checkers has shortened
and improved the process of editing text. Because the computer is
so helpful for this population, it is important to make it as easy
to use as possible.

KEYBOARDING

People who have a visual impairment often have difficulty locating
the keys and learning the standard keyboard. In the learning
stages, the users spend much time searching for the desired keys,
and on the standard expanded keyboard layout this is a time
consuming and frustrating task. Learning the chords for the
BAPersonal Keyboard is as easy or easier than mastering the key
locations on the standard keyboard.

POSITIONING

Persons with severe visual impairment often have to get very close
to the keyboard to type and then close to the monitor to view what
they have typed. Having to move back and forth between the two
interrupts the input process and decreases overall efficiency.
Since the BAT Personal Keyboard does not require that the hand and
fingers move from their position to key any letter or function, the
users do not have to look at the keyboard and can concentrate on
the screen output. Careful positioning of the monitor and the BAT
Personal Keyboard can relieve back and neck stress and visual
fatigue because it eliminates hunching over the keyboard to
visually confirm that the fingers are on the keys.

USING OTHER INPUT DEVICES

People with visual impairment seldom find the mouse helpful because
they have difficulty finding and following the mouse pointer on the
screen. With the BAT Personal Keyboard, one hand is free to move
the mouse without losing position on the keyboard since only one
hand is on the keyboard. If the users do not have to look at the
keyboard to locate they can more readily track the mouse pointer
because the eyes never have to leave the screen. At this time, many
software applications are more efficient if the mouse is used for
navigation and selection. If the current trend continues, more and
more software applications will incorporate the mouse into their
software, making it more and more desirable for the user to work
with the mouse. Also, much of the screen enlargement software
available is able to track the mouse which allows users to use the
mouse more efficiently.

TOTAL BLINDNESS

The advent of synthesized speech technology has given the blind
population computer access. With the computer and all the new
assistive technology, blind people now have quick and efficient
access to printed material and the ability to produce and edit
documents independently. This has immensely enhanced the quality
of life and increased employment potential. LOCATING ON THE
KEYBOARD

The use of the BAT Personal Keyboard will eliminate the problems
which many blind persons encounter in correctly positioning the
fingers on the keyboard because the hand never moves from its
position and only the thumb has to be moved. This will save time
required to properly position the hands on a standard keyboard and
decrease the number of errors from incorrect location. Even the
numeric keypad is accessible without having to move the hand away
from the BAT. The ability to access the keypad easily is important
because some of the screen reading software use the keypad to
navigate for reading purposes.

FREES SECOND HAND

The keyboard requires only one hand for input, which frees the
other hand to access Braille text. Because only one hand needs to
be on the keyboard, the users never lose their orientation to
either the keyboard or the Braille page. This saves the users
much time when working from Braille notes. Accurate input can be
insured by typing with one hand and checking with a refreshable
Braille display. Also, the second hand is free to operate the
separate keypad employed by some screen reading programs.

COMPATIBLE WITH SCREEN READING SOFTWARE

The BAT Personal Keyboard is compatible with most, if not all, the
screen reading software programs which use the standard keyboard to
navigate around the screen or a specialized keypad for reading.
Since the BAT does not require TSR (terminate, stay resident)
software, it frees memory for other programs and does not conflict
with other software applications running at the same time.

USE OF MACROS AND WORD EXPANSION

The extensive macro and word expansion capabilities are important
considerations. These functions help to cut down on errors and
increase efficiency by using simple macros to replace multiple
keystroke commands and word expansions to quickly enter terms,
names, or even paragraphs which are used frequently. The screen
reading software is compatible with the tables format in the
ChordEasy software, permitting the blind user to access and edit
the tables as needed.

 EASE OF LEARNING CHORDS

Blind persons who read Braille are used to the concept of chords
representing letters, since the structure of Braille is based on
chords. They generally find it very easy to learn the chords for
the BAT Personal Keyboard, even though they are structured
differently from Braille. The chords were developed to insure that
the most often used letters are the easiest chords to remember,
thus facilitating the learning process. The BAT Keyboard is
available from Ferguson Enterprises.

INTRODUCTION

The Accent speech synthesizer is a high quality, text-to-speech
convertor; it converts ordinary ASCII text into intelligible
speech. Accent's unlimited vocabulary capability, plus its many
feature options, comprise a useful voice-output device for
various applications.

All internal models of Accent use Device Drivers to provide
interface either through DOS (device name) or BIOS (LPT port).
Accent-SA uses a standard RS-232C serial port for interface with
any host computer. Except for the system-dependent parameters,
software commands and interface format are compatible among all
Accent models.

All Accent models employ the standard Accent text-processor which
can speak in two modes: the text mode and the spell mode. In the
text mode, Accent will convert text into ordinary speech,
employing grammatical rules for parsing the phrase and sentence
for words having two pronunciations, abbreviations, dollar
amounts, numbers, and special signs (i.e., #, %, &).
Accent also employs punctuation marks for sentential intonations.
Additionally, through software commands, speech parameters such
as average pitch, Accent's voice characteristic, and speech rate
can be programmed. In the spell mode, all text including
punctuation will be spoken letter by letter.

Accent's standard vocabulary is pronounced precisely and is
larger than the 20,000 most commonly used words. For special,
customized vocabulary, a standard DCD (Downloadable Custom
Dictionary) utility is provided in addition to the phoneme input
capability. The DCD hardware is built in for all Accent models.

                          DOUBLETALK PC
                        by RC Systems INC.

DoubleTalk PC is the most cost-effective speech device available
for IBM-compatible computers. Containing four types of
synthesizers, DOUBLETALK PC is capable of supporting virtually
any type of speech technology in use today.
Four synthesizers satisfy any appetite. DoubleTalk's four
built-in synthesizers enable it to produce different types of
speech with varying degrees of versatility and sound quality.
The versatile text-to-speech synthesizer automatically converts
plain English or Spanish text into medium quality speech (as
compared to digitized, or pre-recorded speech), unequaled in
sound quality by any other synthesizer in DoubleTalk's price
class. You'd have to spend several thousand dollars to find a
text-to-speech synthesizer better than the one built into
DoubleTalk--and they generally don't even support any other types
of speech!
The text-to-speech synthesizer can be accessed as a printer or
communications port, enabling text-based programs capable of
printing to a printer (such as word processors) or a
communications port to read their data files aloud. The main
advantage of the text-to-speech synthesizer is its flexibility,
unlimited vocabulary and extremely low data rate (about 10 bytes
per second). Speed, pitch, volume, and other parameters can be
easily altered as well.
A built-in LPC synthesizer enables DoubleTalk to play back
LPC-encoded speech, a type of highly-compressed (about 200 bytes
per second) digitized speech used in many talking commercial
programs. This type of speech can be characterized as having
medium to high quality sound; its main disadvantage (as with all
types of digitized speech) is that it can only play back words
and phrases that have been pre-recorded by someone else, such as
a software publisher.
DoubleTalk's CVSD synthesizer supports the type of digitized
speech used in such programs as IBM's "Writing to Read.'
CVSD-based speech can produce medium to high quality sound, but
at much higher data rates than LPC (typically 3,000 or 4,000
bytes per second). The PCM/ADPCM synthesizer allows digitized
speech and sounds to be reproduced with the highest possible
sound quality, but at high data rates (2,500 to 8,000 bytes per
second).
So why did we design a card that supports so many speech
technologies, where other cards generally support only one?
Simple. Most publishers of talking software use different speech
technologies all the time, depending on whether a particular
program requires unlimited vocabulary or the highest-quality
speech possible. Rather than force you to buy several speech
cards, DoubleTalk wraps them all up into one, easy to use card,
at a very modest price is much less than most other cards
supporting only one type of speech technology.
It's so smart, you won't even know it's there. Unlike other
internal synthesizers on the market, DoubleTalk uses no
interrupts, DMA, memory or CPU overhead in your computer, so your
programs will run as fast as possible while maintaining a high
degree of compatibility with your other peripherals. In fact,
the 10 mega hertz 16-bit computer built into DoubleTalk Is more
powerful than many of the computers It's designed to be plugged
Into This "computer within a computer" design philosophy is what
makes DoubleTalk so transparent to your system, without tying up
your computer's resources. Your computer won't even know it's
there!
The good news gets even better! The list price of DoubleTalk PC
is only $300 dollars, which includes the DoubleTalk card and the
deluxe external speaker with a volume control and head phone jack
on speaker. DoubleTalk PC is compatible with virtually any
IBM-compatible computer capable of accommodating an 8-bit,
half-length card, including the IBM PC/XT/AT, PS2 models 25 and
30, and virtually all Tandy computers except the 1000EX and
1000HX.

                          DOUBLETALK LT
                         by RC SYSTEMS

The third member in the DoubleTalk family of synthesizers,
DoubleTalk LT offers more flexibility than ever before. Like its
Apple and PC compatible counterparts, DoubleTalk LT is the most
cost effective portable speech output device you can buy.
Because it relies only on a simple external connection to your
computer, DoubleTalk LT can go anywhere you go. And it's just as
much at home with an Apple II or Macintosh as it is with a PC or
laptop.
Excellent breeding. DoubleTalk LT inherited the traits of the
other DoubleTalk family members that have made them so popular.
High quality text to speech, PCM/ADPCM (digitized) speech, LPC
and CVSD--it's all there. What's more, DoubleTalk LT is
compatible with the Echo IIc and Echo LC synthesizers, enabling
it to work with programs written specifically for the Echo.
Born with a high IQ. Like its siblings, DoubleTalk LT has a
built in, 16-bit microprocessor brain that enables it to
automatically convert any text into high quality synthetic
speech. Imagine being able to ask your computer to actually read
to you that word processor document you just finished, before
printing it!

Versatility doesn't have to be expensive. The list price of
DoubleTalk LT is only $320, which includes the Macintosh LC/Apple
llc Plus compatible DoubleTalk unit and an ac power adapter.
DoubleTalk LT is available with a PC serial port adapter,
enabling it to also be used with DOS-based computers. Like all RC
Systems' products, DoubleTalk LT is backed by our standard
two-year warranty.
DoubleTalk and DoubleTalk LT are both available from Ferguson
Enterprises.

                   SPEAK-OUT AND SOUNDING BOARD
                           By GW Micro

Speak-Out and the Sounding Board family are voice synthesizers
designed specifically to meet the special needs of blind and
visually-impaired computer users. They all provide responsive,
good quality speech that may be used with a variety of speech
programs from a number of different developers. They have many
advanced features which provide greater independence and
increased productivity. Some of these features are
capitalization alert, format alert, fast forward/rewind, pause
and hyperscan. The Sounding Board was designed for standard
desktop PC compatible computers whereas the Sounding Board Lite,
LT and XE were designed for a variety of laptop computers.
Speak-Out is a battery powered synthesizer which can be connected
to any computer or other device with a serial or parallel port.
Since it is an external synthesizer, Speak-Out is the perfect
solution for someone who needs to take their speech with them -
easily moving from computer to computer. It's small size and
rechargeable batteries make it ideal for mobile, portable use.

Once installed, Speak-Out or the Sounding Board will speak any
combination of letters and numbers immediately when requested.
They operate much like your printer - they sit quietly until
information is sent their way. When your printer receives
information to be printed it immediately begins printing this
information on paper. In the same way, they speak the
information sent to them.

FEATURES

DIMENSIONS
Sounding Board is a full size, 13" board which requires an 8, 16
or 32 bit ISA slot. The Sounding Board Lite, LT and XE are
sized for their respective laptop computers. The Speak-Out is
approximately 5-1/4" square by 1-1/2" tall and weighs
approximately 1 lb. The Speak-Out comes with a carrying case
which is approximately 6" x 8" x 3".

MEMORY
If the Sounding Board text-to-speech software is loaded into DOS
RAM it uses 28K. If it is loaded into Sounding Board's 16K of
on-board RAM then it uses 12K of DOS RAM. The Sounding Board
Lite, LT and XE do not have the on-board RAM. Speak-Out has a
synthesizer driver which takes less than 3K of DOS RAM. The text-
to-speech software is loaded inside Speak-Out and doesn't consume
any of your computer's memory.

Buffers may be increased or decreased as desired. With the
Sounding Board family this will increase DOS RAM usage slightly.
The Speak-Out buffers do not affect DOS RAM.

SPEAK-OUT SPECIAL FEATURES
26 alarms can be set for a specific time and/or date. An
optional custom message can be attached with each alarm.
Speak-Out also supports a count-down timer which can be set for
up to 99 minutes.

Speak-Out has a special reload switch used to reload software.
There are no EPROMS in Speak-Out. You are able to upgrade the
text-to-speech software or add an additional feature by uploading
through the serial port.

Speak-Out has a standard Centronics parallel connector and 9 pin
D serial connector on the back and both ports are active. It
includes a serial cable - a parallel cable is optional.

It's rapid charge circuit allows Speak-Out to be fully recharged
in 1-1/2 hours. If you are in a hurry, even a 15 minute charge
provides operation for a long time.

The microprocessor has both a STANDARD mode (4.77 MHz) and a
TURBO mode (9.54 MHz) which is configurable from the buttons on
the front panel. The standard mode provides the maximum battery
life and the turbo mode provides the maximum responsiveness.

The carrying case includes a lower section for the AC
adapter/charger, a disk pocket, a belt clip, a short carrying
strap and a long carrying strap which can be slung over the
shoulder or worn around the waist "fanny pack" style.

The optional automobile accessory power adapter allows use of
Speak-Out without running down the rechargeable batteries. This
adapter will operate Speak-Out but will not charge its batteries.
