                        Cleaning your CD's

It is easy to want to handle the disk with your thumb and fingers
on the disk, however, if you touch the top or bottom of the CD,
you will get finger prints on it. This can cause errors when
running or trying to install a CD if it is not clean and is
blotched up with finger prints. We reccommend that you also be
sure you handle the disk by the edges as any finger
prints on the disk can give problems. You can clean them with a
soft cloth, or cotton ball.

CD commonly asked questions:

1: How do I run a CD?
2: How do I install a CD?

Answers:

Your CD-ROM drive should be considered as anaother drive. Just
log onto your CD-ROM drive with the CD you intend to use or
install. The first thing one should always do is a directory. At
the CD-ROM drive prompt, type DIR enter, or DIR/W ENTER. Look for
a README file of any sort, or any TXT or DOC files. Usually in
most cases, there is one which gives you information about how to
run the CD, or different commands.. Read any information
available on the CD to you before installing it.

Installing a CD in most cases is very simple. Most DOS based CD's
use the INSTALL program, however, it is important to note that in
several cases the SETUP command is used, especially for the CD's
which use the Disk Passage, and such CD's are listed below in the
notes text. Most Windows based CD's use the Setup command,
however there could be exceptions to this rule.

AUDUBON MAMMALS or BIRDS: Type SETUP ENTER at the CD prompt. This
CD uses the Disk Passage program and is extremely easy to run. It
will install it on your Hard drive and made a directory called
DP, or Diskpass. After you have completed the installation of
either the Mammals, or the Birds CD, go to the DP or Diskpass
directory and type DP at the DOS prompt on your hard drive.

Oxford English Reference Library: To install, Log onto the CD-ROM
drive. Do a cd\ez2inst enter. Then type Install and enter. Follow
the prompts. Then to run, go to the drive you installed it on, C:
or D:, go into the directory called READISSC ENTER. Type readissc
enter. This uses a form of book manager especially designed for
this CD.

Family Doctor: Type setup, and tell it where you want the
DISKPAS directory, then it will copy the appropriate files to
that directory. When you want to run the Family doctor, just go
to the DISKPAS directory, and type DISKPAS. Of course, the CD
must be in the drive. It's easy to run, and the menu is also
listed in the README.1ST file on the CD.

Grolier's Encyclopedia: (NGME), or the Software Toolworks
Multimedia Encyclopedia, known as STW, It's all the same, just
type INSTALL and follow the prompts. If you don't have a sound
card, just select number 6, for redbook, and if you do have a
sound card, just follow the folling instructions, which Vernon
discovered one night.

Make sure of the address and the IRQ for your soundblaster.
They normally default to 220 for address and 5 for IRQ.

Log onto your CD ROM drive and type install and follow the menu
to install for the soundblaster. After installation reboot and
install for the second time for the redbook. this will give you
the drivers for the sounds and the video clips, & speeches and
etc.

When installing the Grolier's Encyclopedia, we recommend that you
have at least 530K of available free memory, for running it, or
you might get an error. It's not hard to install. We recommend
that you read the ENCYCLO.TXT file that comes with your Grolier's
Encyclopedia, which we scanned onto disk for you.
from Pat and Vernon Ferguson.

The Grolier's Encyclopedia, or STW (Software Toolworks Multimedia
Encyclopedia), it's all the same. We received the following CD-
NOTE from Mike Barber.

For those of you who have VGA cards but have monochrome
monitors, you'll no doubt experience difficulty if you want to
print a map from the Multi media Encyclopedia on your dot matrix
printer. To rectify this problem, you must include as the last
line in your autoexec.bat file the command "mode co80". Don't
use the quotes. This lets your computer think it has a color
monitor. There's one more step to follow. At the {c} prompt,
type "graphics" and {enter}. This loads the graphics command
into memory for this session and you can now successfully use the
multimedia encyclopedia. Please note that if you do not have a
laser printer, you cannot print any of the pictures.

Lost Treasures of Infocom new series:

CLASSIC TEXT ADVENTURE MASTERPIECES: Installing in DOS: Go to the
CD-ROM type DOSsetup and press enter. Follow the
onscreen instructions carefully. For reading the maps, handbook,
and hints, run the Adobe Acrobat.exe file in DOS. This is only
for running the manuals. To play the games go to the directory
called Infocom, and select the batch file needed to run the
particular game. They are usually in separate directories. Memory
is critical.

I think this includes every game on the second volume and a few
that aren't on either.

Do not confuse the above with the titles listed below, as they
are discontinued except for what is in stock.

COMEDY: Ballyhoo, Bureaucracy, Hollywood Highjinx, Nord and Bert.
Two bonus games, Planetfall, and Zork One.

Insert cd-rom into your cd-rom drive, and log on to the cd-rom
drive (d: or e: or the letter of your cd-rom drive. Type cd\pc
enter. This will put you in the PC directory. All these CD's have
a PC directory. Type xcopy comedy C:\comedy /e/s/v enter. Xcopy
will ask you if it is a file or directory, type the letter d. It
will then copy the files in their sub directories to your hard
drive. Change to your hard drive, type cd\comedy enter. First run
the setup from the Comedy directory, this will go and set up all
the .inf files for each game. This applies for each series. to
run one of the three games type, ballyhoo or planetfall, or zork1
enter. To run Bureaucracy, you must do a cd bureaucr enter. The
other directories include Hollywoo, NordandB. Each game has their
own batch file.

ADVENTURE COLLECTIONS: Border Zone, Cutthroats, Infidel,
Plundered Hearts, Trinity. Two bonus games, Planetfall and Zork
Three.

Place the Adventure CD in your cd-rom drive. Follow the same
procedure. Log onto the Adventure cd-rom. Go into the PC
directory. Do an xcopy adventure c:\adventure /e/s/v enter. Xcopy
will ask you if it is a file or directory. Type d for directory.
It will then copy all the files into their subdirectories. Be
sure to go back to the C drive and into the adventure directory
and run the setup. It will set up all the .inf files for each
game. Each game has it's own batch file to run it.

MYSTERIES: Deadline, Lurking Horror, Moom Mist, Sherlock,
Suspect, Witness. Two bonus games, Planetfall and Zork Zero.

Log onto your cd-rom drive with the appropriate Mysteries CD in
the drive. Go into the PC directory and type xcopy mystery
c:\mystery. Xcopy will ask you again if it is a file or
directory. Type d for directory. It will then copy all the files
and directories over to your C drive. Run the setup from the
Mystery directory. It will set up all the .in files for each game
in that series.

SCI-FI: The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, A Mind Forever
Voyaging, Starcross, Stationfall, Suspended. Two bonus games,
Planetfall and Beyond Zork.

Place the Sci-Fi CD in your cd-rom drive and log onto it. Go into
the PC directory and do the xcopy scifi C:\scifi enter /e/s/v.
Xcopy will again ask you if this is a directory or file, type d
for directory. It will then copy all the files into their
directories on your hard drive. The only directory in the Scifi
directory is the AMFV directory for the game A Mind Forever
Voyaging.

FANTASY: Enchanter, Seastalker, Sorcerer, Spellbreaker,
Wishbringer. Two bonus games, Planetfall and Zork Two.

With the Fantasy CD in your cd-rom drive, go into the PC
directory and type xcopy fantasy c:\fanacy /e/s/v. Xcopy will ask
you if it is a file or directory. Type d for directory. It will
then copy all the files over to your hard drive in their
directories. Run the setup from the Fantasy directory on your
hard drive. It will set up the .inf files for all the games in
that series.

If you don't install these games on your hard drive, the data
files will not be updated if you should have to leave the game
during your setion.

Q AND A: Just type Install with CD in drive to install Q&A. And
it will install it on your hard drive, but to access the manual,
you must have the CD in the drive.

To access the Q/&/A manual, place CD in the drive, and type the
following

Q&A enter
To enter the manual, do a shift, f1. You must hold down that
left shift key, though, You will have a half screen, type an f9,
for a full screen. You can arrow down to select the chapter you
want, and hit enter to select. You can then read with the arrow
keys.

RandomHouse Unabridged Dictionary: Here's a batch file to run
the DOS version. It's like this:

f:
rhud1
cls
c:

Remember the first line of this batch file must be the
letter of your CD-ROM drive. This product works great with
speech. from Pat Ferguson

SPECTRUM: Operating Instructions:
Windows: From Program Manager FILE Menu,
choose Run. Type CDROM drive letter followed by
:\SPEC_WIN.EXE and press Enter.

DOS: Log on to CDROM drive. At DOS prompt,
type SPEC_DOS.EXE and press Enter.

For complete operating instructions and trouble-shooting
assistance, see SPECHELR

SPECTRUM/CANADA: Operating Instructions:
Windows: From Program Manager FILE Menu, choose Run. Type
CDROM drive letter followed by :\SPEC_WIN.EXE and press Enter.

Toolworks Reference Library: Here's a cd note from Jim Fletcher.

I forget to pass along a simple batch file I use to run
Toolworks Reference Library!

 @echo off
cd trl
trl /b
@echo on
call c

It makes using the trl cd much easier. I simply took out the
reference to trl in my path in the autoexec.bat
the call to c is a simple one line batch file that takes me back
to the c prompt when I have exited a program

@echo off
cd \

And voila you are back to c prompt.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call us..

Happy Computing!

Bible Library: There's a bible batch file called CDBIBLE.BAT,
and edit this batch file, and REM out the Clipit in that batch
file, or run it by typing BIBL D: ENTER
Whatever your CD-ROM drive is. This does not load the Clipit.
When running the Bible Library,
be sure your files and buffers are at least 30 or higher. Always
run it from the hard drive in the CDBIBLE directory.
To copy a particular book to your hard drive in an ASCII file, do
the following. When bringing up a search string Such as the book
of Genesis, hit f6, will say "Printer or disk" Select d for disk,
give it a file name with an extention of TXT. It will ask you how
many records you would like to print, you tell it all. Will ask
you one record per page, say no. Then f10. It will save it in
your CDBIBLE directory. They told me at the company, that it's
like this: "Thou Shalt be no other TSR Before ME." But never
fear, it does work with ASAP, and Vocal-Eyes, be sure and ask for
the setfiles for it when you purchase it. The manual is on the CD
and can be read with Readit or WordPerfect. We've been
selling it, and haven't gotten too much feedback, other than what
I have put in this file. from Pat Ferguson

Compton's Contemporary Encyclopedia: We just received the
Compton's Contemporary Encyclopedia on CD.
Here are the specks about it.

It installs on your hard drive and takes up about 3 megs of
space, therefore isn't very big. It will not work with speech,
not even with the VIDRAM turned on or off. Vernon said the text
is displayed in graphical characters on the screen. Someone from
Malta wrote us a letter last week, telling us that Compton's
Products could be used with the VIDRAM statement turned off. This
might be so, but not with ASAP, Vocal-Eyes, or any of the more
commonly used screen reader programs on the market today. We were
told it works with the Hal Screen reader.

Vernon was not impressed with this encyclopedia, though it is
listed in our catalog, I will not reccommend it for visually
impared persons who are using DOS.
from Pat and Vernon Ferguson

Compton's products: They do not work with speech, as they display
the text on the screen in graphical characters. We received the
article about VIDRAM, from a customer in Malta.
It states that with HAL Screen Reader, one can use the Compton's
Family Encyclopedia with the VIDRAM enabled, turns the graphical
text into readable ASCII text, and of course, lets one use it
only in a text mode. We are very grateful to Andrew Camilleri
for the article on cassette.

History of the World: Type install, and use the Disc Passage
Batch file, called DP.BAT, here it is:

D:
cd \DISCPASS
if '%TMP%'=='' set TMP=D:\DISCPASS
dpsg.exe %1 %2 %3 -vtextonly
cd \

This batch file is on the CD, when you purchase it, however the
following text must be in the third line of the batch file, along
with a space after the last percent 3. Here is that text.
-vtextonly

This is very important, as if you don't have a vidio card that it
supports, you won't be able to run it.

This same batch file works for Great Literature, just type LIT,
from your CD-ROM, and it will find the batch file on your c: or
D: drive. This same applies for Monarch notes, Just type MON
from the CD-ROM drive, and it also finds the same batch file on
your C: or D: drive. To run Countries of the world, type COW
from the drive your CD-ROM is in. It uses the same DP.BAT, batch
file.

Cookbook USA: When installing, just do a minnimum installation.

Library of the Future, Version 4: This CD requires 545K of memory
to run in DOS or Windows. If you want to read the manual before
installing it, just log onto the cd-rom and type "guide" enter.

Library of the Future fourth Edition: We received the following
cd-note from David Plumley. When you do a DOS installation, you
will get the "abnormal termination" error at the end of the
installation. But the error message is in error. When the error
message occurs, just press ENTER and the installation will end.

What happened is that the installation routine is trying to find
something called LOTF4, but the program executable file is really
named LTF4.EXE. But it actually copies all the files you need for
the DOS installation.

Another point: the LOTF4 program does not make any special
attempt to use the Sound Blaster card. It does work with speech,
though.

Once you finish the installation, change to the D: drive and type
 CD\LOTF4 <ENTER>

then type LTF4 <ENTER>

Notice that the directory is LOTF4, but the program is named
LTF4. You could do a custom installation of the CD and specify
LTF4 for the subdirectory on your hard drive, if you wanted.

The CD has two installation routines: One for Windows and one
for DOS.

Time Magazine Almanac: The Correct batch file for installing the
Time Magazine Almanac
CD is the following:

E:
CD\TIME\MNU\BIN
TIME92A
C:

Please note, that you must use the letter of the drive your CD-
ROM is installed as, not necessarily the E drive, mine is that
letter, so I have to use e: to tell the batch file where my CD-
ROM drive is. from Pat Ferguson

It comes up first, with a graphics screen, then goes into the
main menu. Works quite well, although, it can be fine-tuned, if
you like.

If you have any notes about any CD's, please send them to us on a
3.5" disk, in an ASCII file, we'll gladly include them, or you
may call us with the information.

End of CD-Notes.
