Subject: Cakewalk Pro and Midi Mapper

Has anyone out there managed to get Cakewalk pro 2.0 to work correctly
with their GUS using the midi mapper? When I select midi mapper out the
midi device the program stops cacheing the patches, but when I select the
Ultrasound driver for midi device it does. Unfortunately I also control
a drum machine through the GUS's midi port and need the midi mapper to
control both the drum machine and the GUS synth at the same time.

Does the Cakewalk patch fix this? I bought the program from someone who
had lost their registration card and never sent it in. Is their a ftp
site where the patch can be downloaded?

Subject: Gravis MIDI box?

Does anyone know if anywhere other than Gravis sells that Gravis MIDI box?
If so where, how much $$, etc. Would it be possible to use another MIDI
box.... I suppose I could always build one, but it's a question of free
time to do so.

Also, how long does Gravis take to get that box out to customers (in
Canada, especially), and FINALLY what the hell frigging number do I call?
I tried to find that 1-800 number for orders, but the only number in the
box or any of the documentation is the tech. support line, which is
constantly busy. And I mean constantly. IE Non-stop... never free.

Thanks.

I think one of the main reasons that many GUS users write
techno/trance/industrial is that those styles of music lend themselves to
computer composition. I'm not sure you'd say it's the most enjoyable to
write. It's quite different from your average garage punk band; more
meticulous and programmed rather than a sponatneous jam session. Those who
like to work with computers, tho, will probably enjoy the style of composition
that such music offers.
Plus, it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

You have some strong points there, but I don't think the GUS is dying. As
more and more firms create WTSynth cards, the game developers are looking for
an established standard to support. The GUS has many drivers, is supported
by nearly all sound libraries, AND it's been around long enough to have some
people very familiar with it. Take that and add the free SDK and you've got
a card that's just made for innovative games. (yea, we make a lot of noise,
too).
I'm not sure if anybody kept it (I purged old mail yesterday for disk space),
but I posted a little idea for a GUS DOS control panel (you type GUS), which
could encapsulate SBOS, Megem, Loadpats and UMid, add some menuing system for
games which looks cute and fast enough to use, and perhaps an entry for the
included applets (playmidi, USS, etc.). A quick configure would also be
cool, since not that many people are aware that all it takes to reconfig the
GUS is a SET and ULTRINIT.
Me, I've left DOS long ago for VB, and I think VBDOS sucks, so somebody else
could write this... maybe if it's done good enough the author gets a job ;)
Yossi.

Subject: MIDI and sampling (together!?)

Over the past months I have seen messages from GUS musicians that
indicate a need to be able to trigger one's own samples from
incoming note on/off MIDI messages. From my understanding, there
doesn't seem to be any way to do this apart from buying an EMU
or EMAX or EPS (or whatever) or converting WAV's to patches.

So what I'm saying here is this...

If I wanted to sample a kick drum off a drum sample CD or a fat
bass sound from a song or a vocal bit or anything, and THEN be
able to put this into an existing sequence (say a sequence on
an external sequencer ie keyboard, drum machine). Thus effectively
using the GUS as a sound module consisting of custom samples,
not patches. Then if I didn't like that kick drum etc simply
change MIDI channels assignments on the GUS (to match those of
sequence) and try another one.

I gather this would be valuable to home movie people as well,
as it would allow the synchronisation of soundeffects with
SMPTE by means of a SMPTE to MIDI converter.

So, am I missing something here, or is there anything available
currently to do this (short of spending $1000's on a sampler).
