Well, I've got an Alesis SR-16 hooked through the Midi box on the gus and
controlled as a module through Cakewalk Pro. The benefits? 1) Nice as
the GUS sounds, the machine sounds are MUCH better, and a lot of them
have built in reverb, etc... 2) I have more of my 1 megabyte left for
instruments without space taken up by drum patches (stuff like cymbals
can be pretty big).

The way the Alesis machine works, you've got about 255 sounds and can
assign each midi note to one of these sounds. So in piano roll on
Cakewalk I can access every one of these sounds at my whim without having
to load patches or worry about running out of space.

The drum machine also has stereo outputs, and the more distinct outputs
you have the better when plugging stuff into a mixer. I can throw drum
patterns and basslines on separate tracks this way.

The GUS is good for loading up TR808 drum sounds and other electronic
stuff that the Alesis isn't strong with, but for realistic drum sounds
the drum module is the way to go.
