I have installed the new base software (version 3.53) and have a few
concerns. Three computers that were using Central Point's PcTools Version
1.0 for Windows are no longer able to load Windows. Central Point's shell
program WNDT.EXE causes a GPF at 0001:AA6F when trying to load the
ultrasnd.drv. This was the case for all three installs. One of the
computers, an Acer 486 DX2/66, had memory conflicts in DOS trying to load
share and the Ultrainit file from the autoexec.bat. How can I fix the
Windows problem? Where can I find a spec sheet on what some of the new
files are and what they are used for, and what the new software actually
provides?

Any help would be appreicated, thanks.

Subject: GUS MAX

I am thinking about getting a new soundcard, and at first wanted a GUS. But
I really don't like the idea of only 1 meg on board. I was looking at the
SoundBlaster 16AWE, and was wondering if any of you guru's out there know
much about it. Aparently, it has 16bit recording, CD Rom, Wavetable, ASP and
compression, and sells for around $250.00. It also appears to be able to
have 28 megs (am I just imagining this) and can use any .wav as an
instrument. AND it has digital effects, such as reverb (which would be great).

Does the GUS MAX support reverb, and allow for more than one meg of memory?

Any help appreciated.

Tim.

Subject: Playing CDs

OK, I'm probably doing something stupid (or missing something obvious).
I have a CD player (Tosh 3401), Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and a GUS.
What do I have to do to get the CD player utilities I've picked up to
play through the GUS speakers? They work fine if I plug headphones
directly into the CD player, but I'd like the music to come via the
	speaker output of the GUS.

	Thanks for suggestions...

Subject: Upgrades

Do Gravis provide an upgrade path from GUS, GUS + 16bit option
to GUS MAX. I've just bought the 16 bit recording board and
now discover the MAX does the same job and more using less
system resources such as interrupts and base addresses, and
works properly with DOOM. I must admit to being slightly
	piqued.

Yes, I also got a GPF (General Protection Fault) when I booted windows
with the new GUS drivers. I don't use PROGRAM MANAGER as my shell, so
I figured that was the problem -- it said as much in the error message.
(I'm using APPBAR 4.00.6, and very fond of it). The following errors
occur before the system startup .WAV is played.

APPBAR: An error has occurred. pick "Close" or "Ignore" (Close)

Application: APPBAR caused a GPF in module ULTRASND.DRV at 0001:AA6F

I changed the line in my SYSTEM.INI from

     shell=c:\windows\appbar\appbar.exe  to  shell=c:\windows\progman.exe

and I've had no GPF's since, except I really miss my shell :-(

Unless you are also using a replacement shell for the standard Windows
PROGMAN, I would guess that the new ULTRASND.DRV has a bug or two. I'm
running Windows 3.11 (not for workgroups), and running APPBAR as the shell
didn't cause any problems with the old (3.11 install disks) GUS drivers.

Thanks for your response. Interesting. I'm running PC Tools for Windows
as the shell in windows for workgroups, so this is possibly my problem.
I'll let the group know what I find.
