I know! I was not asking between the SPX-900 and the Aphex, but between
the Aphex and the BBE to enhance the sound for boomboxes and car stereo.
I have produced a lot of recordings for different purpose, but now i want
to do something that will sound as best as possible on cheap systems.

> an effects processor with reverb, echo, flanging, etc.

It is an incredible unit. The two bands i manage each have several
SPX-900 so i am familiar with them (i have not tried them with a GUS yet
however). It is expensive however, and Chris has sent me info on a
possible alternative. I'll follow up.

> The maximizers just
> really add a "spatial" quality to the sound.

Well, from what i've been told, the aphex with big bottom adds distortion
and widens low frequencies, but i dont know what the BBE does, except
that mixes sound crisper. I think the aphex is probably my best choice,
but if you think the bbe would do a better job, i'd like to know what
makes it better suited (or vice versa).

I have parametric EQs, bass reconstructors, mixers etc...
I do specialise in multimedia and have a studio with digital equipment, so
i'm not trying to do a beginner's system.

> The most important thing when mixing for different

Not nescessarily. In fact a properly EQed techno song i madewill sound
a bit thin on cheap boomboxes (boosting 808 drums at 100Hz usually does it),
while sounding good in a club and in the studio.
That's why i need a sound enhancer (maximiser).

> techno or dance or something. Also, regarding the SPX, you really don't want

Of course. I want the SPX-900 for one of my GUS, the other will be on an
Alesis Midiverb (and FXes from chorus to verb to distortion to curtis filters
on my analog synths and drum machines). If i was doing rock music and trying
to simulate a live recording, of course the reverb would apply globaly. (it's
the way reverb is used with GS files on the net).

> And, if you want to add

I have software to do that, but where the SPX900 shines is for realtime
performance.

> You would want to add the effects when you make the sample.

I want to use it to modify live in real time the output of the GUS.
What i had been doing up to now was to feed the GUS to my SCI sixtrak (i
modified it to add individual inputs and outputs for the 6 channels) with
an echo unit. That however was stealing 2 voices from the sixtrak and
monopolising the control knob and MOD wheel. By using the SPX900 i'll be
able to get back my 2 voices and controls.

I should have been more explicit in my question... So the real question is
Aphex aural exciter III with big bottom or BBE sonic max? What will help
more for less capable systems (i know that with the aphex you can make an
8"woofer sound like a 12"...)

Subject: Looking for patches

Hiya, enlightened brothers.
This is my first post to GUS-M so please don't mail me your cores if this has
been answered yesterday or the likes...
I'm looking for patches, namely the following:
* A more conservative Shakuhachi.
* A better distortion guitar.
* A good 16-bit orchestra hit.
* The brass section, and maybe the trumpet patch as well.

Note that these are going to fit into my default setup, so I don't want 300K
big mamas.
Thanks!
Yossi.
PS GUS 2.4/1MB.

Is the MPB program on epas? I can't find it there.

Subject: Multiple GUS setup/FX processing

Has anyone tried setting up more than one GUS in the same computer? I'm
thinking about this largely because I want to use an effects processor on the
output, but I don't want all the output to be processed (I don't want some
cavernous reverb on both the weird sample in the background and the monster
kick, for example). If I had two GUS's I would certainly be able to process
one and not the other, probably channeling the output of the signal processor
into the line input on the clean GUS, and mix that in with my Emu synth for
the final product. Any opinions on whether this would be worth the trouble or
even possible? Should I forget about this, sell the GUS I have, and find a
used sampler with effects processing? (For the price of 2 GUS + Midiverb...
ha ha ha...)

For that matter, as long as the final mix is not completely dry (far from it,
since my keyboard has a dual-bus FX system), would it really make much of a
difference if the GUS output is processed or not? I use mine mainly as a drum
machine/special effects module, rarely as a major instrument. Is it a
technical sin not to have stereo reverb in a final mix?

I know, lots of "what sounds good to you" type opinion questions here, but
input (especially professional! :-)) is always appreciated.

I did a complete refresh of my software a couple of weeks ago, including
retrieving that good old engine patch from 1.21 (?) which at that time
occupied the general MIDI helicopter slot.

I'm haing a bit of a problem with Winjammer 2.3. I'm trying to record lengthy
sequences done on my Boss DR-660 drum machine thru the GUS into Winjammer.
But I alomst always get a "time overflow" error, and the track gets
truncated. It seems to be related to the record stop message that the DR-660
sends, as even when I record nothing, pressing stop brings up the time
overflow screen. Any suggestions?

Subject: Proposal: Improving the GUS GM patch set

There was some discussion on c.s.i.p.soudcards about finding "the
best" patches. Since this idea is a little vague,
WADLEIGH@PROCESS.COM (Hal ?) and I have come up with some ideas
for improving the General Midi patch set which was installed with
the GUS. Excerpts follow.

>I move we keep all the standard patches except for those that a majority
>agrees really NEED replacement. I'd be happy with four good patches...

>Let's concentrate on those that really NEED replacement, ...

>I think it might be best to just pick a few "worst" patches to provide
>direction to the people who enjoy taking samples and making new patches.
>The ones I want to see replaced don't have any counterparts available on
>the FTP sites except for the kick drums. I'd like to start by nailing
>down the two worst melodic patches and the two worst percussion patches.

After we decide on the major problems, we can try to come up with solutions,
either new patches or existing alternatives.

So what do you all think? Cast votes for the worst 10 patches? 5 melodic
and 5 percussion? 2 and 2? For how long should votes be taken? Does this
sound worthwhile? I'd be willing to tabulate votes, if people want to do this.
I'd like to have a better idea of how people would like to go about it
first, though. -eric

You won't find PowerChords or MidiSoft on any of the ftp disk sets.
If you can do without them, then get the 2.06L set (gus0025-30).
Get a copy of 00Index.ALL - it will tell you what is in each of
these things.

instgrps.exe is to set up the Windows groups. The install sticks it in
an .ini file so it runs next time you load Windows. It then removes
itself again.
