Subject: About them s3m composers...

Well the bad news Lars is that there arn't any for the public... At least
I am almost positive that if you're not in Future Crew you are not going
to get one.(doen't that seem odd... theres at least 5 players for s3m's
and I have only found 3 s3m files)

About makeing MOD samples... I looked around briefly for something to
make Amiga style samples to use in gustrack or mmedit and all I came up
with was makeing a .SND file in USS8 or Gusmix and then useing convert to
make it a .VOC. After that I used a mod composer called Creator (It's in
German and under the file name creat36.zip) Inside that there is an
option to turn .VOC's in samples in amiga format.

I know this probly sounds like alot of trouble for someone who has a
program that lets you record sounds directly into usable samples. If you
do I would be grateful for any help in locateing it.

Subject: EPIC Pinball shots

I've played Epic Pinball for a while now, and have found a "non-fluke" way of
getting the ball into the right ramp, or even the right sink-hole. What you
do is stop the ball on the left flipper (by keeping the flipper up when the
ball's there), let the flipper down, and shoot 1/2 a second before it will
fall off (when you first try this you will most likely shoot too early). To
get the right sinkhole, it's slightly more difficult, as you have to shoot
about 1/4 a second before it will fall off. I still have no sure-fire way of
getting the left sink-hole, but I'm sure one of you have got a good method.

By the way, I do not have a GUS, only an SB. SB seems to have just as many
problems than the GUS does, and I believe the GUS is the best sound card
out there. I can't even get sound on Epic Pinball, it just makes a loud,
continuous "machine gun" sound. This may be due to the fact that I've got
a SCSI card and HD installed... Anyways, if anybody's got some ideas as to
why this is happenning, let me know! Sorry about the "non-GUS" subject,
but it appears that many people wanna know how to play Epic Pinball better.
Has anybody "won" it yet? I've only got up to the Database part.

Happy GUSing.

Subject: Exiting Epic Pinball under OS/2

I've gotten Epic Pinball to run under OS/2, except I have 2 problems
(one minor, and one major). The major problem is that when I exit the
game, the game never really ends. I can kill the task, but the sound
just stays on whatever it was when I exited. The minor problem is that
the screen gets snow (kind of like satellite tv sparklies) when it's
not actually in play mode (i.e. options, credits, etc). Off the top of
my head, I turned video_retrace_emulation, background_execution,
both off, idle_sensitivity=100 (off), hw_timer is on, and
video_rom_emulation is off. Does anybody else have any suggestions?

Subject: Future Crew's Sonic demo

Hey all!

I FTPed Future Crew's Sonic demo, but just can't get it to run on my
machine. I keep getting a message which says something like

demo requires V386 mode of processor
use a boot disk to boot without memory managers

Seems simple enough. I had QEMM 386 v6 running, so I rebooted clean
with NO memory manager (using DOS 6 F8 bypass start-up files). Tried running
the demo. Same result. Tried again, this time loading HIMEM.SYS _only_. Same
result. No matter which XMS/EMS managers are/aren't loaded, the program keeps
spitting back "boot without memory managers".

I took a look at the accompanying READ.ME file, which said that SONIC,
like Second Reality, can run with EMS installed (but does not require EMS with
a GUS present). The READ.ME says it can be run with EMS. The program itself
says it can't do it. Huh?

I tried to get it running on a friend's computer (he, unfortunately for
him, does not have a GUS) just to see if the demo would get past this memory
problem on another system. No such luck.

        My setup is:

                        386DX-33 w/math co-pro
                        4 MB RAM
Trident video card 1 MB (yeah, I know, snore....)
                        GUS w/1 MB
                        IDE hard drive
                        DOS 6, QEMM 386 v6

        Any help much appreciated.

I get the same thing. It only happens when I use both SB DAC and GM or
Roland music. If I use either one alone (either by turning off things in
the game, or by disabling an emulation mode in MegaEm and choosing new
options in XWing's Install) then all is well - no pauses.

I also get garbled speech and FX, sometimes with FX coming out of a
character's mouth. I was watching the intro, and when it got the the

The volumes will _not_ be as they were before you ran Vmap on the file
because of rounding errors (you can only store integer volumes in MIDI files).
These rounding errors are magnified many fold because log and exponential
functions are used in the conversion. Vmapping and then un-Vmapping tends
to hurt the volumes quite a bit.

Sorry about the subject Line, but I don't have a delete key at the moment.

I am having problems with the New Megaem and NHL Hockey. I am using
Megaem for SB/DAC support and it sounds great. The problem is, if I don't
turn the sound off RIGHT before the end of a period, then period end ==
EMM386 exception error #13 and reboot.

That's fine in exhibition, because with the sound on, I hear the 1 minute
announcement, and can turn the speech/dig. sounds off.

However, in League play you cannot change the settings from within a game,
you can only SHOW LEAGUE SETTINGS, but not change them.

Anyone have any suggestions? (Other than switching to QEMM. I bought
version 7 a while ago and installed it and my machine wouldn't even boot.
It gave me the illegal instruction, and said "QEMM is only reporting this
error, not causing it. If you didn't have Qemm, your machine wouldn't
have even booted." Yeah okay. I took Qemm out and the machine booted no
problem. I also returned Qemm.

Subject: headphone impedances

I have seen somewhere in the digest (hey i wont quote the whole thing just to
find the text) somebody saying that headphones have 600 ohms impedance compared
to the 4ohm speakers. Not so. Headphones typically have 16 ohm or 32 ohm when
they are for walkman and bigger headphones may have small impedance too, but
some pro headphones are in the 100-120 ohm range. I have Koss Pro2a with
116 ohm impedance. BTW, even if it's high impedance, by using the line level
out with them, it is still a very painful experience at high volumes. (with
amplified out i'd lose my hearing in about 10 minutes...). But anyway, all
this to say that with the 2 watts/channel GUS amp there should be no problem
with a headphone volume control with the typical 8 ohm speakers. BTW, there
are some very nice Koss bookshelf speakers at Price Club. They are not shielded
however...

I have only tried it with one game and guess what.... the DAC didn't

The game runs fine and the music is great (as it was with megaem

then on things progressivly get worse with inapprobriate sounds at

Has anyone got this game to work?

I'm a bit surprised that no one has whined about this before (so now *I* will).

I have a fairly small machine (4 meg) with no use whatsoever for expanded
memory. The few DOS things that use anything above 640K use extended. In
addition, I thought I understood that expanded memory was "the old thing" before
we got 286's so that one could install more than 1 meg on systems whose memory
bus did not understand it.

So how come MegaEm wants expanded memory, not extended? This means I either
have to sacrifice extended memory, or else complicate my life with multiple
config files (which means upgrading to DOS 6, which means upgrading to DOS 6.2!)

Is it really necessary to hide itself in EMS and not XMS?

First, I have to say, that it great that this program is around, and it
does do quite nicely. But, some of the sounds are a bit off. I did
replace patch 127 with pistol, and it helps. But some of the other
stuff, like when the enemy is shooting, or the s-foils closing and
opening, or when you get hit (bells???), is off. I have had some luck
with changing other patches, like the timpani, and some of the string
instruments. But I would like to find the others..

What I would like to know is. Which patches is Mega-Em loading for the
GM set. I know it can't be all of them, so I want to find out, so I can
look those up, and change them, and I will also give you all my results

By the way. Another good patch to use for patch 127 is substite the
SynthDrum patch or syntom, it is patch 118, but you can put it into 127..

Subject: MIDI 2 MOD ?

Ok,

I have a few questions that maybe someone can answer. First of all, I just
installed my extra memory and played the 2nd Reality Demo from Future Crew.
I was totally blown away! Incredible stuff guys(if you are listening). What
I want to know is what software tools I need to put music like that together?
I am a composer/songwriter and I have a pretty decent little HOME MIDI studio.
I have worked with MIDI for nearly 10 years. How can I write music with my
MIDI tools and then convert it to MOD or whatever the heck these games and
demos by the likes of Future Crew use for playback on the GUS?

Is there a MIDI2MOD converter out there? Maybe I should write one(I'm also
a programmer...that's my bread and butter). What's the scoop?

Is ther a different composition environment that should be used instead of
MIDI?

I forget my other question now.

I had the exact same problem, until I decoded the instructions. Remember in
the first line where he says ULTRASND.INI format has changed, and you have to
edit it to put in your own directory? Well I thought it meant that the change
was the it needed the directory, so I went to edit \ultrasnd\ultrasnd.ini and
WOW! it already had the directory in it. Hmmmm. The install must have fixed it
after all, right? WRONG!

Turns out what he means is that you have to copy a NEW ultrasnd.ini from the zip
file into \ultrasnd and edit THAT one. Voila! Works fine.

Subject: New Mega-EM FTPable? New disks?

Hello,

I was wondering when the new Megaem, windows drivers, etc... were going
to
available on an upgrade disk?

And how soon until they are available on the Gravis Support BBSs/Nodes?
I don't have FTP access, and have had extremely bad luck with BBSs that say
they support GUS, yet when I call they don't have what I'm looking for, and
I don't feel like calling to find out they don't have the new
programs/updates yet, or available first call.

Could somebody email me with an answer to these questions, possibly even
ship me a disk, I'll pay COD if I have to.

Thanks... A happy GUSser with out the access to get new programs/upgrades.

Subject: New Mixer

1) I see that the new mixer has some additional sliders for CD, line, and mike.
John Smith also said that there were some features which were only applicable
to board revs beyond a certain amount.

Does this mean that newer boards actually have more than just on/off for
line/CD/mic? Even w/o the 16-bit daughter? If not, what ARE the features that
are only available on newer revs?

2) What does the "lock l/r volume" check box mean? I don't think there was a
new help file to explain all this (or did I miss it?)

3) What is the purpose of the dual sliders for volume? I thought they were
stereo left/right (relates to 2??), but only the left slider had any affect on
my MIDI volume, and it affected both left and right.

Thanks,

Burns

ps: !THANKS! for giving us the debug setting on the driver to turn off the file
scan at startup!

Well, thanks to the new software updates, I was able to convince a
friend of mine to go with a GUS. :) Moohahaha...
NEMO: the right sink hole shot is not too difficult -- stop the ball
with the left flipper, and launch it JUST before the ball rolls into the
gutter. The left lane is a little more difficult, and I usually get it
mostly on luck.
FYI, all: if you haven't tried it yet, Privateer has begun to sound much
better with the new version of MegaEm.. the instruments sound more correct
now.. still, those notes are sustained for an AWFULLY long time, and it's
incredibly annoying. (I have an SB16 so I don't bother with the DAC
emulation) Is there a fix that we might get to cut long notes
off faster for games like Privateer? I'm impressed how MegaEm handles the
changing music, though.. pretty darn well. M&M V: Darkside.. sounds MUCH
MUCH better. Very impressive.

Subject: new window drivers and megaem23b

 Hi,

I just downloaded the new windows drivers and now I'm stuck. I followed the
directions for removing the old drivers, restarting windows, and adding
the new drivers. .wav files play just fine but I can't get my configuration
to play midi files. I went into Midi mapper to change channel 1 to be
UltraSound MIDI Output Port but I still get no midi music. I've tried un-
installing and re-installing several times and even edited the control.ini
and system.ini files by hand. I know that the DMA and IRQ ports are set
correctly. This happened to me on two different systems but I was able to
get things to work on the first system by executing the c:\ultrasnd\winsetup
command. That same command did help on the second system......

On a second, note: I was using the new Megaem with World of Xeen (M&M4 + M&M5)
and found that using the MT-32 mode would crash after a bit. I switched to
using just the plain Sound Canvas mode and that didn't lock up my computer.
The lock ups seemed to affect my video display, I have a Diamond SS24X. My
 config.sys looks like:
 device=c:\dos\himem.sys
 device=c:\dos\emm386 ram m9 d=146 x=A000-C7FF 3072
 dos=UMB,HIGH
 device=c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /double_buffer
 device=c:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.sys ultrasnd=220,6,6,11,5
 lastdrive=E
 autoexec.bat looks like:
 c:\dos\smartdrv.exe c d /l
 path c:\dos;c:\ss24x;c:\mouse;c:\ultrasnd
 set ultrasnd=220,6,6,11,5
 c:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.exe
 set ultradir=c:\ultrasnd
 set blaster=a220 i5 d1 t1
 lh c:\dos\
            mouse.com
 c:\ultrasnd\ultrajoy 16
 c:\ultrasnd\sboshi.bat

My system has a SCSI busmastering controller (UltraStor 14F) with it port
address set to 340, IRQ=14, and DMA=7. Could there be a problem with this
program trying to access MT-32 default hardware settings?

Subject: Re: those difficult shots in Epic Pinball

Left lane shot: shoot the middle ramp, then as the ball comes out of the
(physical systems) hole it will come out one of three speeds. Slowest speed it
will hit the right triangular bumper's top corner (this is the rarest speed?)
but if you don't hit the space-bar at the right time then the ball's down the
guts. Fastest speed will hit the left flipper. Middle speed will fall on the
right flipper and if you're good enough you can make the shot up the left lane -
requires very exact timing.

Physical systems hole: catch the ball with the left flipper, letting it roll
down from this position ensures the slowest speed available - now you need to
flip just as it is on the tip. You will lose a lot of balls on this one.

I'd love to know if there are easier methods, but these are at least repeatable.
Perhaps someone who reads rec.games.pinball?

Has anyone registered this yet - how do the other table's sfx and music compare?

OK, last message on this...And please, don't mail me about this anymore!
Thanks for the help, but things are starting to get repetitive! BTW, I still
think there is too much chance involved, but here anyway, is one person's
strategy:

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Umm.... The shots you said can be intentionally made. I do it alot.
For the left lane, you must first get it up the midddle ramp. When it comes
out of that hole it can go to two places. Either the right flipper or
it'll hit the R. Bumper and goto the left flipper. If it hits the right flipper
(Which is most of the time), hit the flipper almost as soon as it hits the
flipper to get it up the lane that leads back up to the bumpers. Hit it all
the way at the end of the flipper to get it up the testing lane.
To get the ball in the Physical systems hole, you must wait until it's almost
falling off your left flipper before shooting it. I'm talking like if you have
.ooop... Not have... wait more than a micron more, it'll just roll off the
flipper even if you hit the flipper up.
But I repeat, with a little practice, all the shots can intentionally be made.
*** NOTE If the ball hits the R. bumper and goes to the L. flipper instead of
going down to the R. Flipper, you can still make the test lane by hitting
it the correct way. (It's too hard to explain that shot.)
I would appreciate if you could either post this in the digest, or at least
write a message acknowledging that it is possible to make these shots.
