Subject: [MEGAEM] A Few Short Reviews

Dear Fellow GUS'ers,

The following are a few games I've tried with the new Mega-Em v2.00B023. My
general conclusion is it is an EXCELLENT piece of program incorporating
SoundBlaster DAC. I had hardly any problems using it with the following
games.

My PC configuration is as follows.

386DX-33, AMI BIOS, 8MB RAM, 64KB cache, 207MB Conner IDE HDD, Tseng ET4000
1MB SVGA card, NEC MultiSync 3D, DOS 5.0 with 4DOS, Stacker v3.0, 386MAX
v6.0, Panasonic CR-562-B CD-ROM drive and GUS v2.4 with 1MB.

The only brief problem I encountered was the music in Flashback having slight
clicks and pops (FB was the first game I tried). I dropped my bus speed from
11MHz to 8.??MHz and, true to its word in the DOC file, they disappeared.

X-Wing
======
Works *great* with Mega-Em after configuring it for "General MIDI with
SoundBlaster". No more slowdowns when an imperial fighter hummed pass in
close range. I replayed Dev's Side Step without any problem.

HINT: Those of you who haven't replace the Gunshot patch (ringwhsl.pat)
with pistol2.pat, do it! The patch is used when your laser cannon finds its
mark on an imperial fighter. A gunshot-sounding hit is much more realistic
than the whistling whine.

Flashback
=========
Works without any problems. However, I find some digitized sounds (eg.,
gunshots) sound a bit blaring (not the same as loud). This is also the only
game I've come across so far with continuous sustained notes which are very
annoying, so you use the -SS switch for EMUSET! But otherwise, great!

Fate of Atlantis
================
FOA does not have a setup program. It correctly autodetects a Roland MT32 or
SCC1 and the music is fine. But, alas, FOA does not, I think, provide
General MIDI with SoundBlaster; therefore no digitized sounds.

Betrayal at Krondor
===================
Mega-Em works very well with BAK; however, like FOA, it does not provide
Roland with SB. I didn't play too much into the game though.

I will post more short reviews of other games/programs (including T7G, Dune
II, POP2 and Star Control II) as I try them. Way to go Jayeson and Gravis!

BTW, some of you may be wondering if I encountered RAM shortages after
loading TSR's for my above config. The answer *was* yes, but not any longer.
Nowadays, I normally have 622KB (+35KB UMB) free; with Ultramid v1.05 loaded,
I still have 602KB available. I'll post more details if people are
interested.

Cheers!

OK...before you start blaming Gravis:

If you are playing X-Wing with the new Mega-em and the game jerks when you
press "t" or "r" then I THINK its your computer speed. I know and I myself
have no problems with a 486-33DX...

If you are playing X-Wing with the new Mega-em and the music stops ONLY
when you are in a mission, it is a conflict between X-Wing and your memory
manager. I use QEMM 7.02 normally, but use a DOS 6.2 config with minimum
TSR's for X-Wing...

Now...My own questions:

UltraMid 1.05 still locks up with QEMM installed...I don't know. Maybe its
a TSR...

I wish that the Linear/Exponential switch in the new Windows drivers was
accessible from the Mixer. I HATE having to go through Control Panel to
change back and forth, for a game that uses linear, to a MIDI that I
VMAPed and uses Exponential...

Hello All...

Just a warning to anybody anticapating upgrading their old machines.
Dont buy anything with a LASER motherboard and/or the UNICHIP set.
I dont know if its the motherboard or the chipset but this board
produces the "NMI procedure is disabled on this P.C." when trying
to load SBOS. I no longer have the motherboard, they exchanged it
but I had to do some major bitching. Oh yea, the motherboard was
a 486/dx2 66 board, with 3 local bus slots, and a ZIF socket upgradable
to a P24T. Hope this info saves somebody the hassles I went through.

Thanks!! After working on configurations for about 3 hours, the only thing I
didn't try was switching the SB IRQ! I changed it from 7 to 5. XWING and
Stunt Island work great! A few things don't work. Most Sierra games stillsay "sound device not initiated" when SB is selected. At least the MIDI is
kickin'. It always happens...after I go nuts, I notice it is always something

obvious.

Or they can download the tremstr.pat itself. It's contained in the
2.06a upgrade file (the one that contains the differences between the
2.06 and 2.06a disks). I think the file is ../gravis/patch/gus0034.zip
on Epas.

Mega-Em doesn't need full EMS. All it needs is an active memory manager
like EMM386 or Qemm. If you don't have EMS enabled, just type megaen /noems
to load Mega-Em.

Make sure that you GUS is at port 220h or force Mega-Em to emulate the
SB at that port (with the /sbbxxx switch, I think). X-Wing is hardcoded
to look for the SB only at 220h.

Just run X-Wing with GM for the music instead of MT-32. No custom-programmed
sounds are usedn in GM.

The new drivers are on archive.epas.utoronto.ca in /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit.
They are gus0035.zip (new Windows drivers), umid105.zip (new Ultramid), and
megem23b.zip (new Roland/GM & SB DAC emulator). Just unzip and read the
text file. Before sure to copy the new ultrasnd.ini from gus0035.zip into
your /ultrasnd directory and edit its directory fields if you install the
new Windows drivers.

Hi there

I got my GUS two weeks ago, but it STILL hasn't made any sounds on
my "system". (plain Copam 368SXB-16, MSDOS 6.0, no additional cards
installed) I believe I have tried every trick in the book, but neither
ultrinit nor setgus are willing to negotiate, both tell me no card
is present.

Ultrinit: No card found. Setgus: No Ultrasound has been detected, the
default settings are the onlyone available, install your board and
run setgus to setup your hardware appropriately.

Is it possible that any IRQ-conflicts could lead to such messages?
Can I change the IRQ settings on my GUS by changing the ULSTRASND
environment-variable in autoexec or DEVICE=C:\ULTRASND\ultrinit.sys
ultrasnd=220,1,1,11,7 in config.sys?

I have looked trough my IRQ's in NU, and it seems like LPT1 occupies
IRQ7. Could this be a problem since IRQ7 is the default SB/MIDI IRQ?

If any of you GUS'ers out there have ideas about my problem,
please let me know.

Tommy

PS,
Just to let you know, these "solutions" have already failed:

- changed jumper settings on GUS. Base address 210-260
- boot with clean autoexec & config, and I mean CLEAN
- tried another slot for the GUS (actually 4 others)
- mainboard plugged into one of the 4 slots, works fine
- installed my GUS on another PC, works really fine
- GUS inserted PROPER in slot
- disabled shadow bios & shadow video

I just made room on my HD and as such will be able to hook up my GUS
back, as well as maybe try a game or two. I really couldn't afford the
5+ megs-for-driver-only. I know I must be the exception on this, so I
won't complain too much.

Anyway -- I'm thinking of getting a joystick (a gamepad, actually). But
I was thinking... can I hook up two joysticks? Would be great for a few
NHL hockey games.. :) Maybe one on the GUS, and one on my multi I/O

Subject: JUST TO LET YOU KNOW #9 -

This is an update to the bulletin I posted last Monday which talked
about a bunch of files we released (Just to Let You Know #9).

1) I was mistaken when I said the new mixer (GUS0035.ZIP) was to add
extra volume controls for a V3.4 UltraSound card. I didn't realize
I had a 16 bit recording card installed at the time, which does
have these extra controls, oops ;-). I have updated the README in
   GUS0035 and have re-released it.

2) Some people missed the part of the README which said that
ULTRASND.INI must be in your UltraSound directory (Yes, it was in
   the README <grin>)

"ULTRASND.INI has changed. You will need to manually edit
the PatchDir= line in this file to point to your UltraSound\MIDI
directory. Also make sure this file is in your UltraSound
     directory."

I have reworded this in the updated README to specify your UltraSound
directory and NOT your Ultrasound\Windows or MIDI directory. Which
is where most people where trying to put this file.

3) There seems to be two common problems people are having with Mega-Em
V2.00B23. The first is with the new EMM386 (V4.48/DOS 6.2 upgrade).
If you are having this problem simply use the your Windows EMM386
or your DOS 6.0 one. The other problems seems to be with SB Irq's
failing, resulting in either the SB not being detected or playing
through UltraSound memory (it is normal for the entire UltraSound
memory being played if you reboot your computer during digital
   playback).

There are 3 ways to try and fix this.

     1) Change your SB/MIDI IRQ. If you were using 7 try 5.
     2) If you are trying to get Mega-Em to co-exist with a real SB,
        then pull your SB.
     3) Try setting your GF1 and SB/MIDI IRQ to the same and then
re-run ULTRINIT. This will re-prime the IRQs and may work.
For example: SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,7 then run ULTRINIT.

Jayeson is working on fixing the problems we are hearing about over
the nets. Something I would like to ask those of you having problems
is to please email Jayeson at jayeson@gravis.com or fidonet mail
to Jayeson at 1:153/978 with a detailed description of the
circumstances that lead to the problem and any information about
   your configuration.

Thats it for now. Time to go home and get some food. Chow (pun intended)

To all those having problems with the new Mega-Em and X-wing, I may
have a solution for you. But first a word on the new Mega-Em:
***Thank-You Thank-you Happy Happy Joy Joy GUS GUS GUS!!!!***

Ok, Now back to X-wing. When I first tried X-wing with Mega-em (using
general midi) It worked perfectly for a while but music during the
combat sequences (when you were actualy PLAYING the game) stopped
after an unpredictible amount of time, and the game would crash
occasionally. The music would continue to play for the menus and the
scenes between missions but once the music was gone in the actual game
part, there was no way to get it back. It turns out that by simply
replacing QEMM (which was in my config to start) with EMM-386 (which I
hate but I now use it for x-wing only) My problem was solved! No more
lock-ups and the music doesn't stop! I don't know if this was a
problem with X-wing or Mega-em but if any of you are still having
x-wing problems you might want to diasble QEMM and see if it helps.
As for the sound effects, you should get PISTOL2.PAT from guns.zip at
epas. Use this to replace ringwhistl.pat in the ultrasnd.ini file
(#127). This will make for a better explosion sound, but it is still
kind of quiet. Does anybody know of a better more earth shattering
explosion sound that I could use? I am also going to try and find out
what intrument is being used for the x-wing engine sounds (the high
pitched squeel that everyone is anoyed about) and then find a .pat to
replace it.

As long as I am posting, I could not get SB DAC out of Prince of
Persia 2. My computer would freeze when loading up pop2. I havn't
tried the game without qemm so that may be the problem there as well.
Any comments?

Much to my distress many people are having fatal problems with Mega-Em
23b.

They appear to be of 2 kinds:

EMM386 incompatibility problems, especially with DOS 6.2. I'm in the
process of getting the upgrade now.

or

Irq/DMA failures. The problem of Mega-Em playing all of the GUS RAM is
caused by an Irq failure. If it plays the wrong sample (such as in
X-Wing) it is probably a DMA failure.

To overcome this:

* Try using another Irq. 5 seem to work the best, however the readme
recommends 7 since a number of sound drivers are hard coded to this
  Irq.

* Ignore the section of the manual describing how to use Mega-Em's Sound
Blaster emulation while a real Sound Blaster is installed in the
system. Remove any hardware compatible Sound Blaster devices from the
system or turn off Mega-Em's Sound Blaster emulation with the /SBOFF
  switch.

* Mega-Em may not be setting the Irq/DMA latches properly. To test this
theory, set both GUS DMA channels to 1 and both Irq's to whatever you
want to use for the Sound Blaster Irq. The run ULTRINIT before running
  Mega-Em. e.g.

  SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,5,5
  ULTRINIT
  MEGAEM
  EMUSET

If you find anything that cures any problems you may be having, please
email me with appropriate information.

With all email regarding problems you may be having, please include as

Hello GUSsers!

I've seen quite a few posts from people needing different configureations
for different programs/games. I'm was in the same boat myself, but I have
solved the problem. My solution does NOT involve upgrading from DOS 5.0
to DOS 6.x ..

All it involves is a teensy bit of programming (3 whole lines!) and a bunch
of batch files. What you do is you make a dummy config.sys and autoexec.bat,
and have them very short, mine are like this:

config.sys:
    BREAK=ON

autoexec.bat:
    @call configs\stripbat.bat

Not very much at all :) As you can see, I don't load any device drivers,
TSRs or anything that could cause trouble in the next step. Stripbat.bat
is a program that sets my prompt to "Config [1-8]" and prints a list of
selections. (It also changes the current directory) Then I just have a
bunch of really dumb batch files called 1.bat, 2.bat, 3.bat ... and so on.
One for each different configuration. This is what 1.bat looks like:

    @echo off
    copy config.def ..\*.sys
    copy autoexec.def ..\*.bat
    qwikboot

This, as you can see, replaces my autoexec and config with files that are a
bit more substantial. Just make sure you keep a backup of the stripped down
version somewhere. Qwikboot is the only bit of programming I had to do. It
is just a program that calls int 19h, the bootstrap interrupt, no memory test
or anything, just jumps to the boot sector and starts over again. My
Qwikboot is written in (Turbo) Pascal, and looks like this:

    begin asm
        int 19h
    end end ;

Just make sure that your autoexecs replace themselves and the config.sys
with the stripped down versions, like the ones I showed above. A nice
addition is a program that counts down, 5 seconds or so and then auto-
magically selects your default config/autoexec.. but it isn't necessary.

The bootstrap loader won't work with some (all?) device drivers, such as
Emm386.sys. If you try to qwikboot with one installed you will freeze your
computer, so keep your "stripped" config.sys to the bare minimum.

Subject: NEW WINDOWS DRIVER PROBLEM

After I installed the new Windows drivers from GUS0035.ZIP, I found that the
patch manager will load patches. In fact, patch caching is no longer working.
I tried media player, MCS Stereo, and Cakewalk Profession 2.0 but none of them
would do patch caching. I've triple checked the drivers I setted up but I
don't see problem in installing the new drivers. So my guess is that there is
glitch in the new Windows driver? If anyone knows how to solve the problem,
please tell me.. Thanks..
-Jason Lin-

P.S. Don't tell me to reinstall the whole Windows and GUS software.

Subject: New Win Drivers, Mega-Em

First off KUDOS go out to Gravis once again. Thanks for
listening to us and releasing the new Windows Drivers and the
  SB DAC compatible Mega-Em!

  Here's my feedback:

  WINDOWS DRIVERS
  ---------------
The Windows drivers don't seem very different, but I'm
excited to see future support for Patch Banking. Volume
mapping was never a big deal for me, so I haven't noticed that
much of a change. HOWEVER: the drivers STILL drop notes. This
problem hasn't gone away! I highly recommend getting this
fixed before releasing the final bits. If you want a sample
song that drops notes, get "sofunky.zip" from EPAS and play it
  on Mediaplayer.

  MEGA-EM
  -------
It was a stroke of genius to get Jayeson Lee-Steere to work for
Gravis and add SB DAC support to Mega-Em. It certainly sounds
way cool with the X-Wing and Star Trek 25th Anniversary games.
It's been said many times before, but GOOD JOB JAYESON AND
GRAVIS! The MIDI music is awesome, and the digital effects are
  crystal clear.

My only complaint is that the MIDI music cuts out after a few
seconds into an X-Wing mission. Other people have mentioned this
problem. Any hints on how to correct this?

  REQUESTS FOR FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS
  --------------------------------
Here's my Christmas wish list: a 16-bit daughter card and
a Windows four-track digital recorder to go along with
it. I mean, heck, let's be honest: If you're going to say
that this card can compete with the Turtle Beach 56K card, then
you should also have the software to back it up. Otherwise
making such a claim is an empty threat: it doesn't matter if
you have the same or better specs than the TB 56K if you don't
have the apps to do the same things that the TB can.

Overall, I'm (again) impressed with Gravis. Keep up the good
  work!

Subject: PAS16 & GUS

Well, I tried, and was partially successful.

I got the boards to co-exist ok, and everything seemed fine until it came
time to run windows. Windows refused to let my PAS16 play any sort of
sound. Additionally, when loading, it complained that the OPL3 hardware
could not be found on the PAS16 (The FM chip). I suspect that this is due
to the GUS having some form of hardwired adlib address???

I couldn't very well allow that to happen, since the PAS16 is what I
prefer to use while in windows. If I installed the GUS windows drivers, I
would lose the ability to record in 16-bit. The MIDI side of the card
doesn't matter to me, since I rarely use MIDI in windows, if at all.

The DOS utilities seemed to work ok, and so did Second Reality and DMP
(although the volume level the GUS puts out is uncessarily high, even on
the Line Out!). I didn't think it necessary to try any games, since it had
been established that the cards were co-existing. The settings I used were:

PAS16: DMA-5, IRQ-7
SB: 220, DMA-1, IRQ-5
GUS: 260, DMA-6, IRQ-11, SB_IRQ-12

I removed the GUS again, since my system is getting pretty messy inside,
and it seems that every time I add a new board, I have to re-configure the
whole system again just to make one thing work. It is actually quite a
dilemma. I want to use the GUS, but I can't unless I dump the PAS16, which
means dumping the SCSi interface and the 16-bit recording.

If anyone has more success than me on this matter, let me know what your
settings were, and what you have in your system. My system (as it stannds
without the GUS) is:

486DX-50 (UMC Chipset)
16 Mb RAM
Windows S3 Accelerator SVGA (2Mb)
PAS16 rev. D, w/external SCSI kit
NEC CDR-74-1 External SCSI CD-ROM

Plus lots of other things.....

Subject: Pin out of Joystick Ports

Hey

Can anyone tell me the pin out of the joystick ports on the D-15 that the GUS uses?
I want to make the MIDI interface from the wiring diagram in the faq, but thought that I may as well include both joystick interfaces as well.
The GUS manual says that the pinout is different from the normal joystick pinout (I think!), but seeing as I don't know what either pin out is, that isn't much help.
I also need to know how you split the wiring to give two joystick outs as opposed to one.

Oh, and while I'm at it, where is the new beta test of mega-em that everyone is raving about. The ftp sites only seem to have either 1.0 or 1.5, neither of which seem to match with the 3.something number that people keep quoting.

Help!

In yesterday's Digest lliams44@genie.geis.com wrote that to get the SB to
work he needed to run setgus.exe. There is a way around this, you only have
to load and unload sbos. you could do this in your autoexec during startup or
prior to a game. This way you don't have to go through all the menu options
of setgus

Have fun with your GUS and SB (But get the new megaem GM + SB digital is better
than FM + digi)

There's a new dance/funk/pop song on EPAS! This one's an
original GUS tune that I created with the help of some people on
the Net. It's called "She's So Funky," and it can be found on
  EPAS under

  /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit/sofunky.zip

The ZIP file contains MID (General MIDI compatible song file)
and POP (Power Chords Pro song filel) files. Check it out and
let me know what you think! (It's great to listen to when

  Keep on GUS'ing!!

Subject: Sierra Drivers and MegaEM

Hi,

I downloaded the new MegaEm yesterday aind installed it as suggested. The
only program I could test it out with was Freddy Pharkas DEMO. It worked
100%. BUT - here comes my question: If I walk out into the street I hear
birds tweeting and other background noises. If I use the new Sierra GUS
drivers I hear none of that. The sounds are obviously generated by the
digital audio driver. Howcome then I only hear these sounds thru the SB
driver and not thru the GUS one? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Grant

Subject: Solution to target slowdown (xwing)

When I play Xwing with the new megaem, the game seems to skip or
slow down when when selecting a target. I have a solution to the
problem. On my hard drive I have three versions of EMM386.exe.
One came with dos 6.2, one came with dos6, and the third one I
THINK came with windows 3.1 (it is in my 3.1 directory). If I
use the EMM386 from the windows directory, the game has no problems.
However, this version of EMM386 only gives around 30k of high memory
for drivers. Therefore, doublespace loads low leaving me with only room
for a mouse driver.

Subject: UltraWolf

To all of you who think that UltraWolf is gods gift to Wolf3D I would
have to AGREE!!! But if you are sick of playing the same Wolf
missions over and over again I would INSIST that you get INSANITY.ZIP.
It is 30 new missions made by some guy who found quirks in the wolf
engine. He was able to create: walk-through-walls, Force Fields,
Doors that can't be opened even with the key, invisible enemys, fire
wall, etc. etc. etc. You start of the game in a jail cell with the
door locked and you don't have any keys! (and no there is noe secret
pasage in the starting jail cell!) This file can be found on
ftp.uwp.edu (the (un)-official ID ftp site) in the directory
incoming/id. For those of you who have not found it yet there is also
a built in cheet for WOLF3D. (although insanity can be won without
using it, it may still come in handy), just puch the letters
'I','L','M' at the same time and you will get full amo, health and
both keys. BUT your score gets set to zero!

I have also made some new sounds for ultrawolf. I have better gun
sounds and better dog sounds. If anyone is interested I will *TRY* to
upload them to epas and/or wuarchive. Also if you are interested, I
have replaced all of my guard sounds (sayings and yells) with Ren And
Stimpy sounds as well as some simpsonds sounds. I also replaced a
couple of the mods. I can upload this to epas to if anyone is
interested. But the samples are kind of large and a 1 meg gus is
required if you want to use all of them. But if you just want the gun
sounds then 256K MIGHT be enough.

The version you need is 1.0, but I doubt this version will be found on the
net anymore, since it has been updated to version 1.4. The other version
that docs refer to is the full-blown version of wolfenstein (the one with
all the extra levels and stuff like that).

I still have v1.0 on disk, and if the need arises, I can probably upload
it to epas. I have a look around for 1.0 on some local BBSs, and if you
still can't find it, let me know, and I'll transfer it to epas for you.
