I have a DOS program for the GUS that does 16 track (I think) recording,
and isn't half bad (I actually use 4 track tape deck). It seems pretty
rough hewn, but with some development it had the potential to be great.
I can't recall the name, but I'll look it up - (and if you've tried it and
think its hopeless - well, nevermind.)

I have uploaded ADVENT.ZIP to epas. It is a program which
produces an Advent Calendar on your screen and has a different
Christmas Carol (midi) for each day of Advent. The zip file
includes a patchmanager '.pcf' file for playing the carols
on your GUS.

Enjoy!

I have a few comments to the previous music digest concearning GUS as a
digital multitrack and SAW and so on.

First:

SAW supports ANY Windows multimedia sound card from version 3.x.
The latest version is 3.2. There is a demo version of SAW at
ftp.vortex.com/audio/saw/saw3demo.exe. Someone should finally try it
with the GUS MAX to see if it works, and if it can simultaneously
play and record. If not, than it's practically limited to two cards only:
TurtleBeach Tahiti(or Multisound) and CardD. Please, someone with the GUS MAX,
get the SAW demo and try.

Second:

Quad is a little bit simple for my taste, and supports TurtleBeach cards only.
So if you have to buy Quad Studio (which includes Tahiti card and Quad software),
it costs you exactly the same money as if you bought SAW software only.
And YES, it's an overkill to Quad, it's really good. It has four stereo tracks
as opposed to Quad with 4 mono tracks, visual non destructive region editing,
various effects and so on. Quad is a toy when compared to SAW.

Hope this helps to avoid further confusion.

Have you looked into Quad Studio by Turtle Beach? I'm favoring this direction
right now (I haven't bought the Quad Studio yet):

- Use the GUS as the Wavetable synthesizer
- Use the Turtle Beach 16-bit board as the recorder
- Use the Turtle Beach Quad software as the 4-track digital recorder

The Quad Studio software supposedly can handle up to 4 tracks of digital
audio simultaneously (if your hardware is robust enough to handle the
throughput, that is). It can play back the other 3 tracks while
recording the 4th track, *AND* it can sync a sequencer program such as
Cakewalk to the digital tracks using MIDI Time Code. Seems like my
dream come true. But is it?

I don't know. Does anyone have experience with this combination of the
GUS and Turtle Beach soundcard (I think it's called Tahiti)?

I've read about SAW, but it seems like overkill to me and a little bit
out of my price range. Comments? Suggestions?

Did you get the "Power Chords" sequencer with your GUS? It has
a nice drum interface. It's fairly easy to make a 1, 2 or more
measure drum pattern and then put the patterns together to form
songs. You can set the editor to loop while you are constructing
the pattern so you get direct feedback. It's very interactive.

You can also get drum patterns from Howling Dog (the maker of Power Chords).

Eric Bell of Howling Dog just joined TBL so you may see some notes
from him there as well as here.

I've seen some patches on orst.archive.edu but I haven't had time to
try them yet. I'll let you know if I find any good ones.

PS. I still haven't (unfortunately) found the time to build your
     1x10 bass cabinet yet.

Drums play on channel 10. Besides changing the channel to 10, remember
that drums do NOT use patch changes to signify instrument changes as
the melodic instruments (on tracks 1-9 and 11-16) do. Patch changes on
the drum channel actually are 'BANK CHANGE' messages (which the GUS
midi drivers don't recognize yet), so it's best to have NO PATCH
CHANGES on the drum channel. Each different tone represents a different
percussion instrument.

One comment on drum machines vs the gus (and max) is that the drum sounds
on the gus are fine compared with my Yamaha RX5 drum machine, but the cymbal
sounds are too short. (due to patch memory I presume). The cymbals in my
RX5 ring out much longer (like a real cymbal). So: the GUS is almost
as good as my RX5 for drum sounds.

Having said that, my RX5 is pretty old stuff, and is probably blown away
by the newer drum machines (ie the DR660 or SR-16). Add to that the fact that
the gus starts dropping midi notes (under windows) with a midi file containing
a decent drum track, bass guitar and one keyboard track, I found I ended up
using my drum machine to offload the gus to prevent this from happening.

Summary: If you have the budget for an external drum machine, go for it,
you'll be better off. Winjammer (shareware) lets you break your midi
song up and send drums out via the midi cable, while letting the gus
handle the rest.

I dont know about 'natural sounding' but I've had some drum patches which
sound
ed fairly acoustical- the only way to access if they suit you is to get
ftp'ing
to the addresses at the end of the digest. Get 00Index.ALL from the top level
and then take it from there.

Pass except I use a proper drum machine now instead of a gus and the way the
dynamics of the notes varies with velocity and even pitch is better than the
GUS. But the GUS is a pretty good drum machine

>Can someone recommend drum patches that sound good and a good

Powchords that comes with the GUS may look like a toy at first glance but its
a real gem, especially for drums.
Cakewalk is a good reliable sequencer

no .WAV files involved. The GUS has a midi port on the back, you have to fit
some extra parts to make it work.

I didnt think that SAW worked with the GUS at all!
Get a magazine like Future Music, there are usually reviews of things that
can almost do what SAW can do. I'd get shot of the GUS Max ( or get an old
XT and
run it as a midi tone generator ) get something that works with SAW and a copy
of SAW. I mean you have a DAT and a SPDIF card, make a proper job of it.

The drums are assigned to different notes on channel 10.
I recommend writing the drums in powerchords, save as a midi file in
powerchords then load into midisoft, do a copy, load the track you are working
on and add the drums.

The only way I can get any sound is to pre-load the necessary samples,
play the song, go to the next song, pre-load needed samples, etc., etc.,
Does anyone know of a way to cause BiaB/W to cache the necessary
samples on song load like 99.9% of all the other MIDI programs?
The DOS version of BiaB works fine, but the windows version has lots
more bells and whistles.

Subject: My Experience with CakePro 3 and bank switching

Here's a "session" I had with CakeWalk Pro. 3 and bank switching:

I loaded a cakewalk file that came with the program. I noticed the patch
using Channel 10 (the drum patch) that it uses the Power Drums set.
Fortunately I have an incomplete set of the Power Drum set (gsdrum16.zip and
gsdrum08.zip), so I played the file hopefully that I would hear drums
like that Gated Snare Drum. Switched to Patch Manager, it reports that it
is using Bank 00 of the Drum set. I switched back to CakeWalk Pro,
stopped the file, and clicked on the patch. It gave me a list of drum
banks, like the Jazz Drums, Orchestral Drums, Brush Drums...
Surprisingly, I found that Cakewalk registers the Power Drums as bank 17,
not bank 16. So I edited my ultrasnd.ini, renaming the Power Drums to
bank 17. After that, I went back to Cakewalk Pro, updated the patches,
played the file, and.... voila! I heard the Power Drums playing. The
verify that, I switched to Patch Manager and it says that Bank 17 drum
set is loaded.

Bank Switching does work, but not automatically, however. I loaded
a midi file which Cakewalk prompted me whether to use the SysEx messages
for autobank switch load (? or something like that?).

Is this what you mean by Incremental bank switching? If so, I guess
gravis needs to something about this.

So far, I asked Gravis to look over the Bank Switching concept. I
already sent them the previous digests that had the Bank Switching
discussion. Now, all we have to do is wait and hope.

BTW, can anyone please e-mail me or give me an FTP site for the GS
Specification docs and more important, the list of all (or almost all) of
the instruments of the GS Specification (including the Banks)?

Thanks,
-George

Subject: Trackers

OK, there MUST be something new out there! I want a tracker that
will produce standard MOD and MTM files and works with a GUS. I
also want ease of use that approaches what I've gotten used to
using in PowerChords Pro. Any suggestions?

It seems a bit wasteful to me to buy another card to do recording when
the GUS should do it. Quad is nice but it doesn't compare to SAW. And
if I have to get another card, it'll be something very compatible with
SAW, either one of the Digital Audio Labs cards (e.g., CardD+) or a
Turtle Beach Multisound (or recent equivalent: Tropez, Monterrey, Tahiti
or whatever).

Will do.

I'll have to try it. The sound of the power chords demo was so lame
that I dismissed it without much attention. I'll try it again. Thanks
for the tip.

I'm coming to that conclusion. The machines are just more responsive
and expressive. You get velocity and touch info into the sounds and the
samples are optimized for quality.

I spent an afternoon playing with the Alesis SR-16 and Boss (Roland)
DR-660. The Alesis is selling for $300 and the Boss for $400. The
sound quality on the Boss is much better than the Alesis. Both are
roughly equivalently easy to program but the range of sounds and the
selection of drum kits on the Boss is much better. It's pretty amazing
to listen to a ride or crash cymbal fade in to black silence. The Boss
also has a headphone jack, something that I need and which the Alesis
lacks; with the Alesis you need to feed an external amp from the line
outs.

I hear that the Roland R-70 is the hottest drum machine around at the
moment. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. It's currently
priced out of my range at around $700.

My problem is that I want the digital audio stream directly to DAT; the
midi control stream doesn't help me. Do any midi sound sources have
digital audio (e.g., S/PDIF) outputs or can they output their sound
stream to a soundfile (e.g., .WA or .SND)?

> I didnt think that SAW worked with the GUS at all!

Yup. The latest versions of SAW work with Windows multimedia compatible
soundcards. It seems to drive my GUS but bombs after a while.

Thanks for the sound advice. I'm give it another few weeks before I
give up and get anther card.

I like the idea of just using the GUS and a sound source. And as a
matter of fact I have an old XT lying around unused.
