I have had similar problems when working in windows midi sequencers. Usually
it involved the "spike" you describe, and sometimes a splicing of samples
together (a previously loaded sample would appear in a new one..). The fix
for me was to make sure the GUS was firmly seated in its slot... it has
something of a tendency to fall out, and when it get about halfway out some
funky things start happening.

Dunno if this will solve it, but it has always worked for me.

When you say you "swapped all of you DRAM," what did you swap it with?
When I first got my GUS, I filled it with Sanyo chips which did exactly what
you describe. Re-filling with NEC cured the problem

Just a reminder to those of us living in the US who wish to take advantage of
Eric's $5 Powerchords upgrade offer:

Apparently, the USPS wants 40 cents postage on first class mail to Canada. My
envelope (with 29 cents) was returned with 11 cents postage due.

Sorry Eric: The check is *still* in the mail!

The answer to your question isn't a simple "Yeah! Sure!" or "No, don't
do it!" The best answer (IMHO) is: It depends. Because it depends on
what you're going to use the patches for.

If you want to use ProPats as a replacement for the installed GM patch
set for general purpose MIDI playback and game use, then you may have
problems with certain song files that use a lot of patches. With
ProPats' larger average patch size you can easily fill up the GUS's
memory, even if you have 1MB. This will cause the "missing instrument"
syndrome, and it'll cause you to scratch your head in frustration
asking, "what the heck is going on?"

HOWEVER, if you want to use ProPats as a source of alternative high-quality
GM patches for your specific home studio project needs (i.e., multi-track
recording), then they're an excellent choice!

So, in summary: Get ProPats to spice up your MIDI composition project
songs. But *DON'T* get ProPats if you're just going to use them as MIDI
playback and game music patch replacements.

Maybe someday we'll get a 32MB GUS :-) ;-), and this will be a moot
point, but until then...

(HEY, GRAVIS! Where's the GF2???!!!!)
