I think one of the problems could be, that since the Poly-800 is an older
synth, it will not generate the touch sensitivity range. You could check
this by recording some stuff with a midi-sequencer and trying strike some
keys as best and hard as you can or dare. This way you can check if the
keyboard generates velocities of up to 127.

I hope this helps.

Peace

Hmmm...is the Korg keyboard velocity-sensitive? (My ancient and
unreliable memory tells me that this beast is about 8-10 years old and
may not be.) Most non-velocity-sensitive synths transmit all note-on
events with a velocity of 64 (50% of max), which on the Gus, with its
log scaling, is damn near inaudible. Note that even some velocity-
sensitive keyboards have response curves such that you have to beat
them with a hammer to get a velocity value above 100.

When you say "computer plays the same note", do you mean the same MIDI
event or just the same patch/key combination? Put another way: if you
play into the sound board's MIDI IN, recording the performance with a
sequencer, and then play back the recorded MIDI stream through the
same sound board, does the volume change between input and output?

I think some of the high-end sequencers (eg Cakewalk) can perform some
filtering/mapping on the input events to bring up the "input" volume.
A quick 'hack' solution is to use the Korg's output to "monitor" your
playing, then edit the MIDI stream up to a useful velocity value after
     the fact.

I hope that I've been clear enought... it's not so easy to explain...

No problem: you can always dismiss my answer as the result of
confusion or senility on my part :-)

Yes, your memory has no faults: it's that old ;-) ... and it hasn't
velocity-sensitive capabilities..

Well.. if I record some notes with the sequencer and then I let the
sequencer itself playing them, the volume I get is much louder then the
one I get "live". To be more clear: the answer to your question is: YES -
output is much louder than input...

Anyway, if the problem is in the MIDI Keyboard, I think that what you
suggested should be the only way out...

TNX for the feedback

Any chance that it's just that the keyboard sends velocity 64 with
the note-on messages (or some similar number), while the notes in
your MIDI file are nearer the maximum of 127? Are you using
the default logarithmic volume map, which always made notes other
than those near 127 very quiet - there is an option in Windows
driver setup for linear volume (and maybe in some DOS programs)?
Could volume controller events on particular channels be anything
to do with it?

Anyone know what's the matter with the General Digest? It's been
rejecting posts for 2 days (some sort of disk error), and not
surprisingly, there isn't one today.

Subject: New Demo Group - Bodies in Motion

Hello everybody!
This is Rush from the new demo group Bodies in Motion from
eastern Canada, the province of New Brunswick to be exact. We are
just starting to put some stuff out now so all of you probably
haven't heard of us... There isn't much, but if you wanna check out
our dir pub/msdos/demos/groups/bodies.in.motion at ftp.eng.ufl.edu
there are some small progs there.
Anyway, the reason I am posting to the GUS digest it that I am
the Musician/Graphician and I love my GUS. I recently released an
MTM done with MultiTracker. The file is joseph2.zip in
pub/msdos/demos/music/songs/mtm at ftp.eng.ufl.edu. joseph1.zip is
there too, but it has a little error in it. Anyway, it is a remix of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Many of the songs from the show are in it. It's about 300k or so and
it uses 32 channels (although I think 26 or 28 simultaneously max.)
It also play ok with Mod4Win if you have a fast CPU and lots o' ram.
I would appreciate it if you would take a listen and tell me what
you think. My e-mail is
j5oa@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca

Credit also goes out to Huey Lord (if you're out there) who helped me
arrange it.

Subject: ProPats 3 loops

I finally got around to downloading propats 3 and am having some difficulty
in creating new banks. When I create new banks, patchmanager won't load
the patches for audition. Trying to open the patch in Cakewalk 3 results
in a "Not enough memory on your sound card" error. I know v2 had the
problem of recognizing stuff past 256k on the GUS, but 3 hasn't had the
problem for me.

I would really like to use some of the drum loops and synth patches, but
have had zero luck in using them in new banks.

Suggestions, as always, are appreciated
