Yes, of course 1MB is good enough for a piano patch. Your average
sample-playback synth off the street only has 8MB to 16MB of waveform
ROM, of which piano samples--often for multiple pianos--are only a
fragment. The GUS can't do any nifty filtering or stuff to make sample
transitions smoother, but in theory a good 1MB GUS piano is definitely
possible . . .

I can't get the bosendorf piano patch to work!
When using GUS patch manager, loading this patch has no
effect - I am unable to hear any sound at all!

Other patches I've down-loaded work fine.

I have a 1Mb GUS. The GUS memory test passes with no problems.

Any ideas ?

Here's my problem: The patches that come with a GUS don't work with
Screamtracker but most patches I've created myself do work. If anyone has had
the same problem I'd love to know if you've found away around it (other than
just not using them). Oh yeh could anyone point me to a site that carries a
good (non-corrupt) copy of ptmid? And...well I'll hit you with the rest
tommorrow.

Subject: PIANO PATCH

Hello,

as I am very interested getting good piano patches I tried the bosen_l
patch instantly. Although I have a GUS with 1 Meg it didn't load due to
memory shortage (no other patch was loaded at that time, if I believe what
the Patch Manager tells). I used PatchMaker and removed the last lowest
sample and got a smaller patch that I could load. True, it sounds better than
any other piano patch I know for the GUS, but I use a Yamaha CLP 760 as
my main piano and the bosen_l clearly falls short of the Yamaha.
Not only that there are distinct differences in the timbre of the different
samples, there is also a lot of noise and crackling around some notes
(problem of my GUS installation ?) The main problem with this patch (and
many other other 'digital pianos') is however, that you need multi-layered
samples to match an original piano sound. A piano tone sounds very different
depending on the velocity with which you play it. This behaviour can only
be simulated using multi-layered samples. I wonder if the GUS supports such
samples at all.

Greetings.
Volker
