Subject: Computer Music bibliography

There is a bibliography on synthesizers, midi, computer and electronic
music that I have collected from various sources. I have tried to bring
some structure into it, but not all books will fit into a single subject.
NOTE: I haven't read these books, and the comments are from other people.

The latest version of this file can be obtained by ftp from ftp.cs.ruu.nl
[131.211.80.17] in pub/MIDI/DOC/bibliography or by mail from
mail-server@cs.ruu.nl (send a message with HELP in the body). From the
mail-server the filename without pub/ should be used.
The latest monthly version is also available in the various news.answers
archives around the world, in music/midi/bibliography.

So far I have resampled several Kurzweil patches and threw out several
samples from the patch, but I dunno if I should upload them or not. I have a
300k trumpet, a 127k mute trumpet, and a 170k french horn.

You think I should just upload them?

Subject: making the Gus into a useful sampler

Shortly I'll be getting a pro sequencer (cubase/windows) and have
collected some misc patches and .wav's off the archives for the gus.

My end purpose is to make pro (or at least semi=pro) quality
compositions.

So far I've used Patchmaker for creating patches. It does its thing. I'd
like to have more flexibility. I'm sure the gus has more than its 2-3
preset decay curves. What I want is at least 4-stage enveloping (adsr).
To be like a *real* sampler, it must be able to alter itself in
response to external midi data, like continuous controllers or whatever.

The above is entirely a software-solveable scenario.

As far as velocity crossfading goes, this also should be a matter of
playing two notes at volumes dependent on the midi velocity.

Also software adressable..

I'd like to find patch-creating software for getting better enveloping on
the samples. the velocity crossfading feature would probably have to be
built into the windows driver, and might involve a new version of the
patch file format.

There already exists a good harpsichord and trumpet, but they are big.
Solotrmp.pat sounds like a recording of a trumpet (690k).
There are a few harpsichord ones (I have two 130k, 228k) as well as
various organs. Search garbo.uwasa.fi /mirrors/ultrasound/sound/patches.
Best bet is to just download some of what they have.

Subject: UPDATING PATCH CACHE

Hello,

Some days ago I asked how to get the percussion sounds loaded into the
GUS when using Wincake as a sequencer.
You have to do the following:

-1- set channel 10 for the tracks that contain the percussion notes
-2- use the port that is assigned to the GUS's synthie
-3- specify -none- as patch name
-4- choose update patch cache from the real-time menu

During update the track is scanned for which notes it contains and the
corresponding percussion sounds are loaded into the GUS.
Perhaps ULTRASND.INI is used to know about the assignments of keys and
patches. Does anybody know this exactly ?

Thanks to all who gave me answers to the the percussion patch caching
problem !

Kind regards,
Volker Tosta
