The chorus and reverb controllers on the roland keyboard work with roland
compatible stuff- not with the GUS. It simply doesnt have these features
built in. Remember the keyboard doesnt actually generate any sounds, its the
GUS.

If you want to simulate chorus then the great chrisw@EDU.Stanford.leland says:

This hint and a few others like it can be found in the documentation ftp'able
from the addresses below or as part of my gus midifaq on WWW at

That reminds, saw this Technics keyboard (not sure of model number
anymore) that sells for approximately $10k. Instruments sound nice and
the 88 keys are full sized with 'Concert Touch' or weight on it so it
feels like real piano keys. Anyone have any comments on the keyboard?

Hi. - About Fatar controllers: They have a good reputation and a very
respectable dealer I work with on occassion said he "gives [his] full
endorsement to them" so I guess they're a good bet. My friend has the model
that can hold the computer keyboard on top and it's got great "feel".
Personally, I use a Novation mm10-x, but if I ever get another controller
it will be a Fatar.

I have seen excellent reviews of the FATAR controller (9000? or maybe 900).

If you can afford it, seriously consider it....

Subject: GUS MIDI Problems

Has anyone had any problems with MIDI timing and mod-trackers? Every
MIDI-capable mod-tracker I've used has had delayed timing of Note On
messages, or played the wrong note (e.g. C-3 when I wanted F-2). What gives?

I am using:
AMD 486dx40 Processor
GUS Max v3.53
Novation mm-10x
SoundBlaster MIDI cable (MIDI to ?-pin)

Could the cable be the problem? Since it is for a SB16, are the wirings
different? Will I need to buy the Gravis MIDI Box? Or...could this
be a problem or some other nature (bus speed, IRQ, DMA etc.)

Please help!

I think this is because Recording Session is stripped down for
the GUS, which *doesn't* support chorus and reverb.

I only noticed the other day, but Recording Session seems to
have no way of selecting MIDI devices. I assume that UltraSound
is hard coded, unless you use MIDI Mapper to divert the
output somewhere else.

The reason I was looking at this was that I had just downloaded
a copy a MIDI router (mrouter.zip?). This is a driver which
provides a MIDI in and a MIDI out device in Windows, and just
passes through any output to it to the input device. I've not
fully thought through what you can do, but e.g. you can
play a MID in one sequencer and record it in another - but
only of course if the sequencer gives you the freedom to
select whichever input/output devices you want.

The MidiSoft Recording Session bundled with many soundcards (including
the UltraSound), has no chorus/reverb controls (at least not mine).
MidiSoft Recording *Studio*, the full-blown version, has the controls,
along with the ability to print out the scores.

There's a bunch of stuff left out of Recording Session that is in the
upgrade version Midisoft Studio -- well worth the money if you like the
way this sequencer works, and I do (generally). Besides the reverb and
chorus you mentioned, it will do triplets, has a lot more note control
than Session, and many other niceties, not to mention that it prints out
(not great output, but ok).

However, I was told by Midisoft that there's a major upgrade of Studio
coming soon (?), so you may want to ask about it and/or wait.

Subject: Using the Kawai KC20 with the GUS

Well, a few months ago, I was asking about connecting the KC20 to my
computer via the serial interface on the KC20. I wrote Kawai, and they
promptly sent me a Windows driver for the serial interface. It works
really well, and it really beats having to buy a MIDI box for the
interface. The serial cable (8-pin DIN to DB25, for Macintosh modems)
cost only $6.50. Anyway, the next step I want to try is to integrate the
GUS into my MIDI connections. I notice that MIDI mapper allows only one
MIDI device to be used at a given time. Is there a way I can use the
KC20 or the GUS as a MIDI through, or let both be the outputs? Also,
I have my mouse at com1, IRQ 4, and my modem at com4, IRQ 3. My Kawai is
connected at com 2, IRQ 3. I'm trying to give my Kawai a separate IRQ
address under the Ports icon of the Control Panel, but Windows still
crashes when I try to use MidiSoft with my modem's program at the same
time. Is there a software fix for this from the microsoft ftp site? I'm
using Windows 3.1.  Thanks people.
