Hi there!

This is my second MIDI file ever, and I think I may have over-exerted myself
musically on this one. This one's a bit adventurous featuring all sorts of
tricks. It is "The West Side", a largely instrumental ditty by Phil Collins.
You will need to set playmidi with the -x32 switch as it runs out of voices
real quick. Included with this MIDI file is my very first custom patch.
For those who are wondering, no it's not really Phil, it's...well, it's...
er...me. Nothing fancy to the patch and won't be too useful for other
projects, I'm not that advanced yet. If you don't like the patch, its not
really necessary, but you might want to eliminate Channel 14; there's a
command-line switch for playmidi for that. I replaced instrument 127 (the
ring whistle), so if you want to run this in Windows, you'll either have to
change your ultrasnd.ini, or load Patch Manager to remove the ring whistle.
Also, I am losing some notes in Windows, and it may be that the MIDI stream
is flooded, or it just might be Windows. You'll have to set the number of
voices to the max, too.

I'm no professional, by any means, I can barely play my synth and my
music reading skills aren't much better. If anyone notices any mistakes
that I've made (other than I can't play worth a damn, I already know that :-)
or can give me any helpful tips, please drop me a line and I'll see if I
can fix it. Or if you hate it, you can tell me too.

I did this with my GUS and a little help from my second-hand Kawai K3.
I used an old version of Cakewalk as a sequencer, and PeD to make my patch.

I'm planning on doing more, but I don't know when they'll be done since
I have a full-time job and a family.

However, comments/suggestions/flames are eagerly received at:

   pettypi@gaul.csd.uwo.ca

at least, for now: I may have to get another account soon.

BTW, my other MIDI file was my rendition of Mike Oldfield's rendition of
George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm". It's in a file called igotryth.zip and
was on epas and I presume it has been mirrored to wuarchive and other sites.

Bye for now,

Carl Pettypiece.

P.S. Thanks to Phil Collins, for making inspiring music.
P.P.S. Thanks to Gravis for making my dream card (great sound and cheap)!!

    GUS! GUS! GUS!
