MusicWare Piano cost me $99 at a computer chain-store in town. It
works pretty well with the GUS, and sounds fine. However, I'm not
impressed with it as a program for learning piano. The problem is
that it's really boring! I envision piano software that would make
the piano a sort of joystick interface to an interesting game, with
the learning happening by accident. MusicWare Piano, by contrast, is
just a series of normal lessons, run by the computer. Might as well
do it the old-fashioned way.

Caveat: So far my kids and I have only worked through the first couple
of hours of lessons; perhaps it gets better eventually.

I also found a nit: my setup appears to miss short notes sometimes.

I got an offer for the MW Piano with my GUS MAX for $99. - Don't pay
more than that. MW's # is 1-800-997-4266

I got a MW Piano demo at wuarchive.wustl.edu in
/pub/msdos_uploads/win3 filename: mwpiano.zip
It is probably still there.

I would recommend doing what I did.
I bought the Miracle Piano Teaching System from The Software
Toolworks from Computability ( 1-800-554-9903 ) for $80.
I you want to know more about Miracle, call The Software Toolworks at
1-800-234-3088 for a brochure.

Subject: PatchEZE 1.01 released!

Hello fellow GUS-lovers. Just an announcement that PatchEZE 1.01 has
been released!!
PatchEZE 1.01 is a bug fix version for those GUSers having problems
installing the software (there was a problem with some versions of the
UltraSound installation), or with the MIDI in/output (problem with
other MIDI drivers being used). If you haven't had any problems in these
two areas, then don't bother getting the new version.
If you DO get the new version and you have already installed PatchEZE,
be sure to read the upgrade section in INSTALL.TXT before reinstalling.

If you don't even know what PatchEZE IS... then read the announcement
in the soundcard newsgroups, or get the readme file via ftp.

PatchEZE has been uploaded to the following FTP sites:

    archive.epas.utoronto.ca /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit
    ftp.cica.indiana.edu /pub/pc/win3/uploads
                                      (or check /pub/pc/win3/sounds)
    wuarchive.wustl.edu /pub/msdos_uploads/sound

    File: P-EZE101.ZIP
    Readme: P-EZE101.TXT

PatchEZE has also been posted, uuencoded and split into three files of
less than 64k each, to the comp.binaries.ms-windows newsgroup.

  Hope you enjoy it!

1. Why does anybody other than Gravis think that the MAX is worth the
money, since it still has only 1 Mb RAM? (A 16 bit card by Logitech has 2
Mb).

2. What would happen if one were to extend the DRAM capacity of the
existing GUS by either physical expansion of slots, or putting in DRAMs
larger than those specified?

3. Would anyone venture an opinion about the Midiscan software sold by
Tiger Software for $200? It is claimed to produce MIDI files from scanned
sheet music.

Thanks. Yours in gratitude for the reborn Digest, Emory Menefee

Subject: What's this about a 32-bit soundcard from Gravis?

I've heard talk of a 32-bit (VLB/PCI?) soundcard coming from Gravis
soon. Anyone have any details about this they'd like to post on the
GUS digest?
