Subject: CD ROM daughterboard?

I am considering adding a CD ROM player to my computer. Most of the
offerings I've seen in shop include an interface card for the CD ROM
player. I also own a GUS. Is there a reason to buy a daughterbord
CD ROM interface for the GUS instead of using an interface that comes
with a CD ROM player, e.g., because of availability of IRQ's or
DMA channels? Any comments appreciated,

Subject: HELP NEEDED : Auditioning Patches

I've posted this before to the rec.music.makers.synth groups etc.
but have never been able to get a firm repsonse on this. I have
GUS MAX, and MQX-16 interface hooked up to Roland EM-303 GM Synth. Now
according to the manual you should be able to audition patches
using a MIDI keyboard. I have the MIDI Thru switch switched to
whatever the manual says etc. but when I play the keyboard, nothing happens!
Now I have checked the MIDI stream and indeed MIDI signal are reaching
the computer all on Channel 4 (this is one of those synths with fixed channels -
cannot change anything at all). The GUS is working since the computer "keyboard"
does audition the patches. I have tried changing EVEYRTHING I can think of
but to no avail. The only time the Patch Manager seems to work with the keyboard is when Cakewalk is running, since Cakewalk is somehow linking the
two and updating the patch cache correctly. But I'd rather not use Cakewalk
all the time if possible. My system comprises of :

	* 386/33 AMD clone with Intel 387 co-pro
	* Oak VGA monitor
	* MQX-16
	* GUS MAX
	* Roland EM-303
	* Windows 3.1 using Norton Desktop 2.0
	* Stacker 4.0

I have tried removing NDW 2.0 and running a bare system, etc.
but the SAME problem exists. Does the GUS MAX expect all keyboard
signals on Channel 1 and Channel 1 only???? If so, are there are ways to change
this???? I haven't tried Patch-Eze yet so this may work but
for now any suggestions? I wrote Gravis 3 months ago about this problem
but no response. I may have to call them but if anyone has run into this
prob before, could they please e-mail me ASAP at jlaw@irus.rr.uwo.ca???
Thanks! :-)

Hi there. I'm an industrial musician here in New Haven, CT; my recording
project is called Angst. Last March i put out a collection of songs on
my ittybittyunderground record label, 137 Records. At the time i had no
16-bit DB and limited recording equipment. I am now working on recording
a new album in 16-bit glory with phat effect processors and such.

If you're interested in getting a copy of Angst's _Strain_ (the project
released last semester), email 137.records@yale.edu for our info file.
Angst's music is a good example of how the GUS can be used as a backbone
for electronic music, and it's the only GUS-centric underground release i
know of.

The real memory limitation is in the GF1 chip, that only addresses
1 MB. The best thing that could happen if you somehow "connected"
more RAM is that parts of the memory would be physically represented
in more than one chip :)

Subject: Propats 3 ?

Back in August I saw a message on comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.music
announcing Propats 3.0, from 911499r@axe.acadiau.ca (JAMES ROSCOE)

For those of you who haven't heard of Propats - the following from
Bill Allen sums it up:

>Propats are a collection of large (very large) patches that can
>be used in place of the ones that are supplied with the GUS. These
>patches have obviously been lovingly put together by someone who
>cares more about the sound of music than the practicality of the fact
>that the GUS has only 1meg of memory. Most of the propats use .25 to
> 5 meg, thus leaving room for 2 or 3 instruments. By contrast the
>typical patches supplied with the GUS are 10k-60k. The supplied
>patches are acceptable in a wide variety of uses, but for real music
>they tend to be lame - listen to the Grand Piano. The initial hit
>sounds OK, but the decay is awful - it shoulds like a $30 casio.
>The propat version of Grand Piano sounds just like a GP from low
>notes to high - it's amazing.
>
>I know that I speak for most in the Music digest when I state that
>these propats are the best reason around to get a GUS with more
>memory.
>ballen@ejv.com (Bill Allen)

Now the message I saw stated that the 20-odd zip files had been
uploaded to:

archive.epas.utoronto.ca     pub/pc/ultrasound/submit

The file names were: PP3-1.ZIP through to PP3-19.ZIP

I just checked the archive at src.doc.ic.ac.uk, and I cannot
see these files (the Propats 1.0 and 2.0 files are there though)
Can anyone clue me in as to where I might find them ?

Paul.

I agree about 1MB being not enough, but what's that with the Logitech ?
Isn't it that one having 2M BITS (not bytes) of SRAM to hold the program
for DSP (not samples) ? I'd like to ask everybody to make a distinction
between bytes and bits since it's different by a factor of EIGHT ;-)
