Subject: .avi files

Ok, i've finally broken down and decided to try these things out. Two
problems: where do i find .avi files on the internet? why are there big
gaps in the sound at regular intervals?

1MB gus2.2, drivers 3.53 plus gus0042, vfw1.1a, pcshell/win 1.0 (yes, the old
version, i don't have the new version yet), 486DX40, 350MB Connors, IDE
local bus, ATI UltraProPlus ISA, 2 VoiceFaxModems, Scanner, 16MB...

d=128 in emm386.exe line, gus=220,7,6,11,5, in windows hifi on, linear
volume, buffsize=4096, 22voices, and 9 second audio buffer.

All the DMA channels work fine and i don't have problems with midi/wav
playback (except for the occasional midi note that gets missed, i can deal
with it).

I know this has been brought up before and probably answered adequately
many a time so please respond in direct e-mail to guia@cc.umanitoba.ca

i couldn't find any immediate references to this problem in the faq.

thanks.

Subject: GUS & Pacific Strike

Since the Digest seems to be up again, I4d like to repeat
my question:

Has someone come up with a solution for both Sound *and*
Music in Pacific Strike yet ?

My machine hangs when the first word is about to be spoken
and the GUS plays random sounds till reset.
Additionally, PS is the first game which refuses to work
properly with my Gravis-joystick. I am not able to calibrate
it right.

Please help me, because the game is real fun (when it works...)

Subject: GUS & Sound Galaxy NX Pro 16

Greetings.
I purchased the Gravis UltraSound 256k about 3 months ago and had initially
thought of discarding my Sound Galaxy NX Pro 16 (which is a *good* sound
board) until I learnt that both could work co-existantly. Delighted, I
installed both the boards with different settings for each card:
        SGPro16: BASE:220, IRQ:7, DMA:1
        GUS: BASE:240, MIDI/SB-IRQ:5, GUS-IRQ:11, PLAY/REC-DMA:3
However, games are not working properly; not to mention Windoze too!
Apparantly, some games cant' find the SGPro16 card. Playmidi, however, is
working fine. Even the SGPro16 demo doesn't work properly: FM music is fine,
but not the Sound FX.
Can Windows handle two sound boards at the same time? (ie: can both cards
output
Windows' sounds?) Also, MidiSoft session does not play midi files as well as
Playmidi in DOS. Eg: With HIDNSEEK.MID loaded in Windows, some instruments
do not play. BrightFX that plays the intro of the song, for some reason
doesn't sound at all in Windows. Works perfectly fine in DOS, though!
Can anyone with 2 cards installed please help me out?
Thanks in advance..
--KevT--

P/S: SGPro16 is SBPro2, ADLIB, DISNEY, WINDOWS & COVOX compatible.
P/P/S: How do I upgrade my 256k GUS RAM to 1MB? Any shops selling
GUS RAM chips in the Ottawa area? Thanks again!

I just installed the new disks, v3.53, and neither INSTGRPS.EXE or PMAKER.EXE
will run properly (in Windows). I know the INSTGRPS is just supposed to set
up the groups for the different applications, but all both of the programs do
is make the hard drive go for a few seconds and then return to the Program
Manager... I've seen this happen before, but I have no idea what is wrong. Is
it my Windows, or something I forgot to set somewhere. I know from trying tolp others that sometime obvious info is overlooked so I mention that I moved
Mega-Em and the rest of the emulation stuff to another directory, and I updated
the v2.06a disk install without deleting it.... probably doesn't matter, but
any ideas?

I installed the 353 disks, and and the update to that also, but now I get
a "divide by zero or overflow error" upon starting windows. the startup
wave plays fine. I've also had no other problems playing mods, midis, or
any other sound files through windows. I just get this startup error
after I installed the new disks.

Anybody have any idea what could be producing such an error?

thanks,

This probably won't help, but the 353 files I got were called gus353a through
f, and came from src.doc.ic.ac.uk. They worked fine.

And I don't understand this one. You would hope, under Windows, that all
drivers were compatible (apart perhaps from Patch Caching, which some cards
need and other don't - is this the problem?), so the question of being
SB compatible should not arise. Also as far as I know, the GUS drivers will
ONLY run in enhanced mode. Is Finale perhaps playing via MIDI Mapper using
a setup with some of the channels disabled - if so you will need to go
into MIDI Mapper and enable them.

The file is called XWNGSNDS.ZIP or something like that. That has the
xwing.ini file that you are looking for. Get them both and you will be

Now that I have my MAX up to 1Mb, I installed it over the weekend.
Contrary to the documentation, my SINGLE speed Mitsumi does not work on an
8 bit DMA channel, anymore than the double speed drives are supposed to.
MTMCDE loads alright, with /T:3, and so does MSCDEX. But try to do a dir
on the CD, and it goes into lala land.

Not to worry, though. I do not have to operate in polled mode. You can
set /T:S instead for MTMCDE, and still operate in interrupt driven mode,
and avoid the slower MTMCDS. In fact, had I had cause to investigate this
earlier, I'd have put it in no-DMA-but-IRQ-ok mode all along, and saved a
DMA channel. I can't tell the difference! Certainly, if there is any
measurable difference, caching the CD with Smartdrv would even things out.

I have MTMCDE v2.10a, if the version makes any difference. Be happy to
put it up somewhere if someone needs it...

Hi folks; gladto see that we're getting some traffic back again.

I bought a CD-ROM version of the Lands of Lore game over the weekend.
Using Megaem as I was told to, I was able to get sound to work properly
for the most part, with one problem. I found that many of the game's
speech-bites came out funny. The best way to describe it is that the
speech was echoed, or doubled. I've heard of this problem before, with
other games, but I cannot recall how it was fixed. Can anyone help me out
here?

Sorry to disappoint you, but LucasArts have been using their own music system,
called "IMuse". It supports like SB, PAS, MT-32, and that's all. The IMuse
system has .IMS drivers of its own which are quite small and totally unrelated
to anything else I've seen.
What we should hope for is that IMuse is real-mode only, and LucasArts has to
resort to AIL for S-n-M CD.
