Subject: Akai S1000 Sampler Formats

To any knowledgable S1000 users,

I need to get samples from the S1000 converted to a PC format (.WAV, .VOC).
Does anybody know how to do it, or is there public domain software somewhere?
My goal is to then generate patch files to use them. Currently I'm
clueless. If you have any information please email me directly. I'd
appreciate any help.

Subject: Another problem with 3.53?

I installed 3.53 a few days ago, then installed the GUS0042 patch to get HP
Dashboard working again.

I'm running a GUS with a TG-100 module in a Vectra 486/25N.

I only gave it a short test, but recording through Cakewalk is now all screwy.
MIDI note off msgs seems to disappear randomly (but pretty often - maybe 1
note in 10), note on msgs seem to be delayed far more than is normal.

I'd done some surgery on my guitar synth, so I assumed it was at fault
(software engineer always blames the hardware, right?!?), but running the
guitar synth direct into the TG-100 fixed the problem.

Is anyone else seeing these funnies? I guess the unusual things about my
setup are:
- two MIDI devices directly controlled by PC (GUS, TG-100 via serial port)
- Alesis SR-16 driven from MIDI OUT on TG-100 (not really unusual, it's always
worked in the past)
- guitar synth controller generates heaps of pitch-bend msgs compared to
keyboard controller (although filtering pitch-bend in Cakewalk didn't seem to
improve things)

Any ideas? I'll do some more info gathering now that Steffi is out of the
French Open :-[ By the way, I'm one of those guys who's never had a problem
with the GUS in my PC before (well, besides user error)...

Hey all... I have uploaded new patches to epas. To save
bandwidth, I will not attach the text file describing the patches to this
digest. This is just to let you know that there are some really good
patches at archive.epas.utoronto.ca /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit. The file
is wowpats1.zip. wowpats1.txt gives a summary of the patches contained
in the zip. Enjoy.

Subject: Dropping notes......Continues

Hi All,

Finally response on this major problem!

>For the record, I experienced the same thing. GUS0035
>did not drop notes like later versions.

In fact GUS0035.ZIP is the only version that didn't drop notes.
The versions before it also dropped notes! In GUS0035 Gravis
proudly said that the Dropping Notes Bug was fixed , I was really
happy , until a got the GUS0039.ZIP file, again dropping notes!!!

>Notes are dropped
>during busy pieces with lots of drums and bass quarter

It doesn't have to be busy.

>notes at 120 bps and faster. Slower pieces are better.

Yes the more BPM the more notes will drop.

>I have a 486DX33, 8 Megs Ram, ISA bus clock speed 8 MHz.

Shouldn't be the problem even on a 386sx 16Mhz there shouldn't be
any droppingnotes. Me and a friend a mine use both a 486 DX 2 66Mhz,
8 MB RAM, Local Bus Vga, Harddisk. And don't tell me that's to slow
for a Ultrasound, btw it has is own processor, the GF1.

>Very human-like. :)

I don't like that, when I want human-like, I'll play myself, I don't need
Cubase for that...

>I don't have GUS353 yet.

Yes I have it............Still dropping notes.....And the patches are NOT
all new,
only a bit of them.

>Boy, am I glad I'm not the only one! I have this problem in a bad way.
>I have an old Kawai K3 and a 386DX-25 and the dropped notes are
>making my MIDI setup virtually useless.

It hasn't anything to do with your setup...A friend of mine (the one who also
uses a 486Dx2 66) Doesn't even has a Midi-Box has also dropping notes,
he makes house (i also) and goed beyond the 120 BPM. But I think that
only the GUS midi synth is dropping notes. The Midi Output isn't dropping notes.
(I have the original Gravis Midi Box, payed $25 for it!!) I haven't played a
long time
with it, because it's not fun with a GEM PX-7 (I only use it to play, not
for the sounds, well the organs are okay, but they are on all synths)

>I haven't checked thouroghly enough with the new disks, but I
>suspect it's still there (sigh). I hope they fix this soon.

Yes there still are :-((

The problem is..... Averybody has dropping notes... It doesn't matter which
setup they're
using. But as I said in the first msg.. You will only discover this Bug
while you are really
working with your GUS.....

Hope they do something about it......soon.

what you would like to see for the GUS, let me know. Any specs on what
analogues do would be appreciated as well. Thanks for your cooperation...

Subject: New version of Patchmaking Reference (2.4)

I just uploaded version 2.4 of the General Patchmaking Reference
(formerly known as the GUS Patchmaking Reference) to the submit directory
at epas. Since the last revision, I've added the following:
Info on 2PAT (included in the patref24.zip archive)
Rewrote with info specific to Turtle Beach WavePatch users
Expanded the "Tips" section, including info on the extended
features of the Envelope dialog in ver. 1.13 of Patchmaker Lite.
Added two more sample indexes, including Roland S-550 disk images.
Added things here and there, and made some
corrections/clarifications.

Summary: The Patchmaking Reference is a Windows Help file is
designed for someone who wants to use the resources of the Internet to
create custom patches on their Gravis Ultrasound, Turtle Beach Maui/Rio
or another RAM-based, sample-playback card. I first created
this reference because many, like myself, are interested in Patchmaker
Lite to create their own patches, but may not know where to start--or
may be stuck along the way (as I have been). Patref 2.4 contains
information that I wish I'd had when I was starting out--hopefully
someone else can benefit from this info as well.

Please let me know if you find Patref useful!
Thanks,

John

PS. patref24 is also in my ftp directory: ftp.netcom.com in pub/jtcapps

Subject: Not enough memory to run "Power Chord for Ultrasound"

Hello,

When I try to run the "Power Chord for Ultrasound", I get this error
"Application Execution Error: Insufficient memory to run this
application. Quit one or more windows application and then try again".
Well, there is no other active windows appl., and there are about 10M +
77% system resources free. The pc has 4M and 10M of virtual memory.
I have no idea why it complains of not enough memory to run.

The Power Chord worked fine when I first installed GUS sound card & software.
Since then I switched and have played with "Power Chord Pro Demo Version".
Just last night when I went back and tried to use PC GUS ver., I got the
memory problem. All other windows apps work fine. Is there a possible
conflict between PC Pro Demo & PC GUS? Or there are some config files
which I accidentaly deleted ???. Thanks for your help.

Subject: SysEx etc.

I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with:

1) Does anyone know where I can find WinSysEx? It was in Electronic Musician
magazine as a configurable SysEx program. It is written by Don Strenczewilk
and is supposed to be shareware. The file is supposed to be called WSYSEX.exe.
I found a file on the Net( I forget where now! ) by that name but it was not
configurable with sliders etc, it was a simple SysEx transfer utility by Rick
Saada. I want a utility as mentioned to use to configure and save info for a
Digitech RP-1 MIDI guitar effects processor.

2) Also, does anyone know of a good Hammond B3 patch for the GUS? I am
currently using the rockorg patch from the WOWPATS file. I really don't care
how big the patch is as long as it will fit in a GUS w/ 1Meg and allow a few
other small patches ( 500-750k would be perfect ).

Thanks,
Mark Long

Four days later the GUS MAX arrives. I dig it out of the box and install it

(following the on-screen instructions) - it works perfectly with the
MIDI demos, MidiSoft Recording Session and Power Chords.

After setting the drivers for Cakewalk - she also is fine!

What a great environment - the 'net, the group, the GUS MAX...who could ask
for
more!

On the basis of your recommendations I decided to buy a GUS sound card, but
I have got a problem with it. The latest version GUS-MAX (16bit sampling) is
still not available on the Middle European market.

Please, could you advice me how to handle this issue ?

Is it possible to order the card somewhere ? (MASTERCARD or VISA is no problem
at all).

Thanks a lot for any suggestions
