Does anyone know once and for all just exactly what the legality is of
borrowing sounds from a commercial keyboard? Francois Dion said something
about it being impossible to copyright a wave form. If this is completely
true then I have a friend with a mondo awesome keyboard that puts the GUS
patches to utter shame. It seems like it would be a fairly simple matter
to sample everything and make GUS patches that would sound almost as good,
but I wouldn't want to do anything blatantly illegal.

Actually it wouldn't be such a simple matter now that I consider for a
time. I'd have to sample each sound in several ranges and be sure to turn
off any reverb, as sampled reverb would make the patches sound awful...
He has a few patches that would really be worth the trouble though.
Excellent string sounds and a bunch of section sounds (trobone section,
trumpet section, horn section, etc. etc.) that sound much better than a
chord played with a single trumpet patch.

Gravis really needs to come up with some sort of bank switching mechanism
to facilitate having custom patches. It's one of the biggest advantages
of the GUS and will soon be one of the main things setting it apart from
the flood of wavetable sythts to hit the market, yet Gravis has done
absolutely nothing to make it easy to take advantage of the feature. Who
wants to keep a bizillion versions of the .ini files?

Subject: EPS songs format to MID format

Patch makers who use EPS disks must have come across the
EPS sng format. Do any of you know of a converter from
that song format to MIDI. By looking at the file it seems
as though only a header need to be made ? The actual data
is quite similar to midi files?

Any answers ? comments ?

If you're in the market for a relatively inexpensive, but really nice MIDI
controller, check out the Roland A-30. I believe it's between $600-700 US.

Subject: GUS recording under Windows?

I DL'ed GoldWave from EPAS last night, and started playing around with
it, recording some sounds from a microphone, and then from the
pre-amped output on my guitar. Everything worked great, except that
the input levels were awfully low. Then I tried recording with Pocket
Recorder and finally the 'microphone' accessory that comes with
Windows...But all had the same 'low volume' problem.

Does anybody know how to get the GUS to record with a higher input
amplification, or do I have to build an outboard pre-amp to record at
reasonable levels??

Thanks,
Dave

Subject: MIDI box...

HI GUSfans...

I heard from my friend who recently got his MIDI-box that it took
almost two months for his box to get here(Singapore) arrrr! There must be
a faster way to do it yes? Are there any mail-order services out there who
handle this sort of thing but deliver via Fed Ex or UPS air? Or would any
kind soul offer some of their time to help me out?

Another thing...has anyone out there managed to sucessfully convert
a SB midi-box into a Gravis box? *no offense to Gravis*

A few more questions good people.

I know this is probably a FAQ but there isn't a music FAQ as yet so I'll
ask now. What are good FTP sites for MIDI files and patches? Also where
can I get demos of Cakewalk, Musicator etc? Whatever happened to
those altered string patches which were on archive.epasa while back, I
can't seem to find them. Lastly, I thought I'd let you all know that,
since I con't afford a program like finale, but wpuld like one, I am
writing a notation program with midi input/output for the gravis. A
friend of mine (who is a much better programmer than I) is doing the guts
whilest I design the interface. Can Iuse Ultramid to load 16bit patches
or should I use the low level sdk. Any helpful suggestions for the
program would be appreciated.

Thanks for the advice on the keyboards everyone

That patch sounds quite good. Much better than acpiano. I noticed one
thing though... In the high range it almost seems to have too long of an
attack or something. When played rapidly in the high range the sound
seems to cut off before it's even started. I realize that on a real piano
there's no sustain, but this seems to be something with the attack, not
the sustain or decay.

I only noticed this with one MID. GMMAPLE. Maybe it's just been so long
since I heard a real piano I'm just confused.

Yesterday I was playing midi files to show my brother how great the gus
is compared to the Thunderboard. I used a windows midi software that came
with the Thunderboard to play the GUS midi files. I went to dos to play the
files with the gus. Everything worked fine up to this point but I then went
back into windows to use the thunderboard again (a temporary set up to show
my brother the difference) and midi mapper just disappeared! It was there
when I was just using the Thunderboard in windows, and now it is gone. Well
in reality it is still there but windows thinks it is gone. It doesn't show
up in the control pannel, and when I try to run the midi software that came
with the Thunderboard it doesn't find that silly adlib midi!?!
What could have happened, and why? P.S. I did replace my gravis config file
with the original midimap.cnf.
Any takers- It worked for a couple days....
