I seriously doubt your answering machine is 2 or 4 bit... Though I 
believe many answering machines use a voice compression technique... such 
as continuous slope adaptive and such... so it makes more sound fit into 
fewer bits.. but if you had 2 bit sound, that gives you only 4 possible 
levels... so the point is, how you store the sound and the actual ADC 
resolution are not always a 1:1 correlation, depending on your 
compression technique.
