Subject: GUS memory / Megaem midi

Hi everybody,

I have two questions:

1. The GUS manuals state that you need 70ns memory chips to upgrade GUS
memory. I happen to have an old video card that was blown up, and it
has 512 KB of 80ns DRams. Is this impossible to use on a GUS? Has anyone
   experience with this?

2. I thought MegaEm only emulated midi instruments through the GUS synth.
Recently I read in some soundcard newsgroup someone was using MegaEm to
hook up external midi modules to the GUS midi out port, running DOS
software that was written for an MPU-401 interface. Any clue as to how
   this might be done?

Happy Gussing,

Check out the May 1994 issue of Electronic Musician - there's an article on
composing music for video games.

To Paul Cady's request for musicians to stand up and be heard:

Well, I subscribe to the GUS Musician's Digest, although there's not much
of interest other than discussions of new patches and how to handle them. I
guess we music-types are just not as vociferous as the game-types. My GUS
works great, and I have no problems, so don't do much posting.
I use it almost entirely for midi music composition for the fun of it. I use
Power Chords Pro and Music Time (a lower cost version of Encore; it's excellent
for score entry and printing, except for no patch cacheing support, but that's
OK, just preload the ones you want.)
Power Chords Pro is great, and has patch cacheing; you can't beat it for
generating percussion and chord tracks.
My setup is just a 486/33 PC with GUS and old SBPro retained for the CDROM
interface and also used for midi input, since I already had the interface
before I got the GUS. I just set midi-input to the SBPro, and output to
the Ultrasound synth, set midi-thru, and can play the GUS sounds on my keyboard
(a Roland PC200). Works great.

Greetings!

It would appear from the relative daily postings to the
General and Music Digests that the primary use of the
GUS is for Gaming.

As someone not primarily into blasting virtual bad guys:
I'd like to see how many people are really here and maybe
we can get some more activity going.

If you use your GUS for music composition and/or
performance please post a brief summary of what you
use and how you use it.

Thanks!

tempting in this mornings mail?
