What are Personalized Web Setting?

Think of Personalized Web Settings as HTML verbosity options for different web Wsites. When using Internet Explorer, press INSERT+F3 to open the HTML Features dialog box, and select Personalize Web Settings.

In previous versions, the keystroke INSERT+F3 was attached to the JAWSFindNext feature. This has been replaced by F3. Also, use SHIFT+F3 to find previous.

You'll note that the dialog looks a lot like the regular Verbosity dialog box. For more on this feature and how to use it, see the "Personalized Web Settings" topic in the JAWS help system.

If you just installed JAWS or have not yet used the Personalized Web Setting feature, this folder only contains this readme file. As you start using Personalized Web Settings, the files JAWS uses to remember your settings will be stored in this folder, and look like this:

WebSiteName.com.jsi

The web site name is really the part between the http://www. and the next slash in the URL, or Web address. So if you make some Personalized Web Settings when on the Freedom Scientific pages, you will get a file with a name that looks like this:

freedomscientific.com.jsi

If you create Personalized Web Settings on the Yahoo Maps pages, which look very different from the regular Yahoo page, you would get a file that looks like this:

maps.yahoo.com.jsi

When you open the Personalized Web Settings dialog box, notice that the name of the dialog box has the Web site name in it, which will help you know what to look for in this folder.

In addition, this folder contains your application specific verbosity settings for programs such as Word and Excel. These settings are also stored in .jsi files. The files have the same name as the application. For example, verbosity settings for Word are stored in the file Word.jsi.

I made some Personalized Web Settings. How do I get rid of them?

Go to the Web site you personalized, then open the HTML Features dialog box. Select Personalized Web Settings and then press the SPACEBAR on the option called "Personalized Settings" which is the first option in the list. It will change to "All Cleared" and your settings are gone. Press ENTER to clear your settings for this Web site.

How do I know if the page I'm on has Personalized Settings?

You may not remember that you personalized a Web page. When you return to a personalized web site, press INSERT+T or INSERT+Q and JAWS will report the following message:

Personalized Settings for this Site

Also, you will see this message displayed if you press the INSERT+Q keystroke twice quickly.
