Restoring the iPhone with iTunes:

These instructions were written using iTunes version 12.5.5.5 and Jaws 18
on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition,
 and their sole purpose is to help navigate the iTunes program interface.

Note: remember to maximize the application window, and use the tab key to move through the controls,
and once you are familiar with the tab controls, you can use the F6 key to move more quickly through them.
Note:
No matter which of the below options you choose, "Find my iPhone will need to be turned off.
On the phone, go to "Settings" and then "iCloud", and make sure "find my iPhone is turned off.
You will be prompted to log-in with your Apple ID, and once the service has been turned off,
you will get an e-mail from Apple, notifying you of the change,as shown below:
 
   Find My iPhone has been disabled on your name iPhone.  
With Find My iPhone disabled, this device can no longer be located, placed in Lost Mode, or remotely erased using icloud.com/find or the Find My iPhone iOS app.  
In addition, your Apple ID and password will no longer be required for someone to erase, reactivate, and use your iPhone.

  *Restoring the IPhone:
This option will erase the phone, and then install the most recent version of IOS.

1. Open iTunes, and connect the phone.

2. Tab to the "iPhone" button, and press the spacebar.

3. Tab to the "restore iPhone" button, and press the spacebar.

4. In the resulting dialogue, you will have 3 choices as follows:
backup
don't backup
cancel
Since you are here to restore the phone, the obvious choice would be to make a new backup
 before restoring the phone to it's factory state.

5. Select the backup option and press the spacebar.
In the resulting dialogue, you will be asked if you want to return the phone to it's factory settings,  after which the latest version of IOS will be installed.
After that, you can  restore your data and settings.

I stopped at this point since I didn't want IOS 10.2 at the time.
Note:
No matter which of the below options is chosen, I found only the most recent backup to restore from,
since I found no way to store more than 1 backup.

** Restoring an iCloud backup:
This option allows you to restore a backup from iCloud.

1. Open iTunes, and connect the phone.

2. Tab to the "iPhone" button, and press the spacebar.

3. Tab to, and make sure that the iCloud" radio button is checked.

4. tab to the "restore backup" button, and press the spacebar.
Now follow the prompts to complete the process.

**Restoring from a computer backup:
This option allows you to restore a backup stored on your computer.

1. Open iTunes, and connect the phone.

2. Tab to the "iPhone" button, and press the spacebar.

3. Tab to, and make sure that the "this computer" radio button is checked.
4. Shift tab to the "restore backup" button, and press the spacebar.
Now follow the prompts to complete the process.
